I am always blown away time and time again by couples that just pour their heart and soul into their wedding celebrations. I mean take WWW readers Sarah and Daniel for example, they searched for a place that meant something to them both, to say I do within and didn’t compromise. They crafted so many touches, which will make you want to reach for the scissors, not to mention the lovely words in the readings and the music choices to make their hearts soar.
The lovely couple were hitched on the 29th May 2017 at Scarborough Spa beside the sea and danced the night away at Stepney Hill Farm barn in North Yorkshire. The Scarborough seaside is important to them both, a destination where Sarah holidayed as a child and where Daniel spends a lot of time surfing. Talking of surfing, Daniel and his mates hit the waves in the morning and was even gifted his dream board in the morning. Amaze!
The rustic barn sure was a blank canvas, but along with their family and friends, Sarah and Daniel transformed it. Drapes, fairy lights and greenery were used throughout alongside personal thoughtful touches like the knitted blankets and vintage postcards. Oh so sweet.
Sugarbird Photography, I cannot thank you enough for sharing these remarkable images with us.
THE PROPOSAL | 6am Christmas Day 2015 after being together for eight years. Dan had prepared a series of seven presents down the stairs in our house, all of which meant something to us as a couple. Dan declared that it was seven presents, one for each year we’d been together. Oblivious and still half asleep I smiled and reminded him that we’d been together for eight years. This prompted him to lead me into our living room where my eighth present was waiting… a tiny box surrounded by candles! It was definitely the most romantic thing Dan has ever done and made Christmas incredibly special that year. My ring is a bespoke design made using stones taken from rings, which belonged to my two late grandmas. I love wearing it every day.
THE VISION | A relaxed and informal feel, where the focus was firmly on us making a commitment to each other. It was also important to us to have as many people as possible up dancing at the end of the night!
THE PLANNING PROCESS | It was hard to know where to start at first! There is so much advice and help on the internet though that we soon got into the swing of things – wedding magazines and Pinterest quickly became our best friends! We booked the venues after a few months of being engaged and everything else fell into place thereafter. All in all we took 18 months to plan the wedding.
BUDGET | We didn’t really have one however we were determined not to spend a fortune as that didn’t seem the point of getting married. We shopped around and made an assessment of what was and wasn’t reasonable.
THE VENUE | We live in Sheffield and visited a fair few venues in and around our local area but nothing really felt very ‘us.’ Scarborough is a place which is special to us both, me having spent many a family holiday on the East coast growing up and Dan because he spends a lot of time surfing that coast whenever he has a spare hour or two! We both love being beside the sea so when we realised you could have a civil ceremony in the outside area at Scarborough Spa overlooking the sea it seemed perfect. To add a slightly different feel for the second half of the day we chose the barn at Stepney Hill Farm as our reception venue. It is just beautifully rustic and allowed us that relaxed and informal feel to the day with a BBQ as our wedding breakfast.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | A combination of the Summer and Meadow Katya Katya Shehurina dresses with vintage inspired shoes by Rachel Simpson. Soon after becoming engaged my Mum showed me my late grandma’s veil, which is beautiful 1920’s lace and I knew I had to wear it. It felt incredibly special and like she was part of our day.
FINDING THE DRESS | I found the dress trying on process completely surreal at the start and had very little idea about what I wanted other than ‘something a bit different!’ I found designer Katya Katya Shehurina and local stockist Dotty Taylor Bridal on the internet. I loved quite a few Shehurina dresses but when the veil worked perfectly and both my bridesmaids and my Mum commented on how ‘me’ the Summer / Meadow combination was I knew I had found the one!
GROOM’S ATTIRE | To fit with the feel of the day Dan wanted something more informal than your traditional grooms suit so he opted for a bespoke made grey tweed jacket and waistcoat with navy chinos, finished off with baby blue bow tie! The jacket and waistcoat were made by Ted Williams – Sheffield. Dan loved the process of being fitted for a suit like a proper gentleman! It was also important to Dan that he wore his late Grandad’s watch.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | We chose a reading each for our ceremony and tried to make them personal. I chose a verse and the chorus from Jack Johnson’s ‘Better Together’, which was read by my close friend Holly. Dan and I have lovely memories of seeing Jack Johnson together at a festival a few years ago and the lyrics of the song just resonate with me. Dan chose an extract from one of his favourite books – The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, read by his close friend Tom. The words are beautiful.
We both love music so it felt really important to get it right! We had several carefully constructed playlists for before, during and after the ceremony as well as local musicians The Jelly Roll Jazz Band who definitely brought an element of fun to the day! Complete with sunflowers in their hats they brightened up the unfortunately dull Scarborough sky!
One of Dan’s best men is a DJ by trade so when he offered to do our reception we snapped his hand off! His amazing mix of soul, funk and hip hop had everyone up dancing just as we had hoped! Thank you Ian!
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had six beautiful bridesmaids! Pinterest introduced me to the ‘mix and match’ trend and I loved it. I found a beautifully bright and bold print dress from Very and then matched the rest in different shades of dusky pink and nude around it. I let my bridesmaids pick their own shoes and hairstyles to prevent anything feeling too prescribed or formal and they all looked amazing!
THE FLOWERS | From the moment I met with Kirsty at Minnie Bees – Scarborough I just knew that she got what was going on in my head. I wanted a mainly botanical feel but with a lift created by pops of colour using seasonal and locally grown flowers. My bouquet was just that and I kept the bridesmaids bouquets simple by using just greenery, which looked stunning against their dresses. The button holes picked out flowers and greenery from my bouquet, which matched perfectly. Kirsty also made the most amazing top table runner, which completely lifted the brown wooden wall of the barn.
THE CAKE | Dan’s Aunty Jo is well known for her cake making skills so we definitely didn’t hesitate in accepting her kind offer to make our cake! Pinterest helped me harvest some inspiration and we decided on a three tiered sponge cake covered in buttercream with an ombre look. I was keen on traditional wedding cake toppers and Jo did an excellent job! The groom even wore a partially concealed superman suit as a nod to Dan’s love of all things super hero…..!
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Choosing James at Sugarbird Photography was one of the best decisions we made. From the moment we met him we were at ease in his company and we knew we’d made a good decision when he was excited at the prospect of capturing Dan’s wedding morning surf! James injected fun into the ‘formal’ shots and captured every detail and moment of our day beautifully. We particularly adore the creative shots James took of the two of us and have received so many comments from family and friends about how wonderful the images are.
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Scarborough Spa is a beautiful Victorian building with the beach and sea as it’s backdrop so aside from a red carpet aisle and deck chairs for the guests to sit on we pretty much left it alone. The barn however…! We hired it as a blank canvas and being able to decorate it exactly how we wanted was an absolute dream for me! I definitely lost hours of my life to Pinterest! I love the rustic feel but wanted something a little different. I created the look I wanted using drapes, fairy lights, greenery, big beautiful blooms and metres worth of ribbons!
I wanted to celebrate Scarborough as a place by including subtle seaside details such as serving ice cream after the ceremony and giving whirly pop lollies as favours. I particularly enjoyed sourcing old postcards of Scarborough, which were left for guests to read. I loved reading about people’s trips to the seaside from years gone by.
THE HONEYMOON | We remained in our little bubble for a few days after the wedding by escaping to a lovely spa hotel on the East Coast. The main honeymoon is yet to come……
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The first memorable moment for Dan came before the day had really even started! Dan was told to leave his surfboard at home as the boys would bring a spare for the wedding morning surf. Little did he know that the stags had bought him his dream surfboard, which was unveiled to him on a cliff top overlooking the surf. Dan was absolutely overwhelmed by the gesture!
Others include arriving at the barn in a VW camper van to be greeted by all our guests and handfuls of confetti! It was one of those pure happiness moments, which I will never forget.
The speeches also stand out, all three were brilliant. Dan had clearly put a lot of time and effort into his and my Dad’s was particularly emotional for me. He had been so worked up about his speech in the lead up to the wedding, I was so pleased for him that it worked out so well.
Our last memorable moment is everyone being up on the dance floor for the last song of the night!
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | It’s difficult but try not to picture how parts of the day are going to play out. It will always be different so once all the planning is done, just let it happen! We did order sunshine for our day but unfortunately the weather was typically ‘British’! Don’t let a little drizzle ruin your day!
Finally, accept offers of help! Everything takes longer than you imagine it will, so having help from those around you does wonders for your stress levels!
