Today we are delighted to share WWW readers Vikki and Lewis’ special wedding day with you. This fun-loving couple tied the knot on 12th August 2017 at a church ceremony and followed their nuptials with a wonderfully colourful and relaxed reception in tipis at Bower Hill Farm in Surrey.
Guests were welcomed by a steel band, how fab is that?! The whole day was a riot of colour from the rainbow blooms to the lights in the tipi by night, and just wait until you see the wonderful floral archway outside the tipi.
After trying on rather a lot of dresses that didn’t fit the bill, Vikki fell in love with a Sottero & Midgely number and doesn’t it look just stunning on her? I love the unusual detail on the shoulders. Not wanting to wear a veil, she plumped for a beautifully simple and elegant hairpiece, which matches perfectly.
Kirsty Mackenzie has captured all the colourful goings on just brilliantly. Thank you so much for sharing these fantastic images with us Kirsty. Enjoy WWWers!
THE PROPOSAL | I lived in Rhodes, Greece for a few years before we met, and I still think of it as my second home. Lewis proposed there when we went on holiday in June 2016. We were in St Paul’s Bay, Lindos for the day and whilst looking over the stunning bay Lewis got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was very personal, with no one around… perfectly us!
THE VISION | We wanted a relaxed, fun and different wedding to anything we had personally been too… and a tipi wedding in a field with fete games fitted that bill.
THE PLANNING PROCESS |We started looking into ideas on the beach whilst we were still in Rhodes! But took inspiration from all different wedding websites, Pinterest and brought lots and lots of wedding magazines! We decided that we wanted tipis and a festival boho wedding, we just needed to try and find a venue that would suit our vision.
THE VENUE | We wanted to get married in Betchworth Church in Surrey, as Vikki’s mum rests there, and wanted to have her as part of the day. It’s also the first church on the film Four Weddings and a Funeral!
For the reception we wanted to find somewhere that isn’t predominately used for weddings and that we could make our own. When we found Bower Hill Farm it was perfect. A local field, overlooking a lake with cows in the field next to it! We knew we had taken on a lot and it was very much a DIY wedding, but this is what we wanted, and were happy to put in the effort!
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress – Sottero and Midgley.
A really good friend of mine, Emily Bunce is make-up artist so I could be completely honest of how I liked my make-up done, I have never loved my makeup as much as I did on the day… she did an amazing job! She also did make-up for some of my bridesmaids alongside another makeup artist Beth Devon (as there was so many of us!)
Veils just don’t suit me… so after quite a bit of searching I was pleased when I found an Ivy and Pearl Bridal clip on Etsy. It is so beautiful and handmade with colours of my choice, which went perfectly with my dress. I wanted to splash out on one thing and I absolutely love my nude Christian Louboutins… that I can wear again… obviously! Our rings’ were made by Vikki’s friend Agapitos who owns a jewellery shop in Pefkos, Rhodes – so extra special to us! I also wore my mum’s pearl earrings and a bracelet that Lewis had brought me.
FINDING THE DRESS | I’m fortunate that my step-mum gifted me my dress, so had a respectable budget to play with. I had an image in my head of what I wanted it to look like, but in reality that style just didn’t suit me. I ended up going to lots of boutiques and tried on 100’s of dresses (no joke!), and nearly lost hope. But then I found a Sottero and Midgley dress on their website that I adored. I hunted down a boutique that supplied the designer, and as luck would have it Mathilda Rose in Lindfield was having a trunk show with the dress in it in just a couple of weeks. I booked an appointment and fell in love the moment I saw it…It was perfectly me and different to anything I had seen before!
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Lewis always had in his mind what he wanted, he just needed to find it. After a couple of attempts he found a blue Richard James suit which fitted perfectly and he looked incredibly handsome!
THE READINGS & MUSIC | Music is really important to us both, so a lot of thought went into this part of the wedding. Our friend Sophie Causbrook is a professional singer so was a no brainer when deciding who would sing whilst I walked down the aisle at the church. We decided on ‘You’ve got the Love’, as it has always been our song. She also sung whilst we were signing the register.
At the church we had three readings. Vikki’s aunty Patricia Carney read a biblical reading, Lewis’s Aunty Sharon Smith and Vikki’s family friend Sue Mallet both read a poem that they chose.
At the reception guests were welcomed by the sounds of the Sussex Steel band. All the guests commented on how amazing they were, and they really set the atmosphere for the remainder of the day. In the evening we had a live band who kept everyone on the dance floor for hours!!
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had five beautiful bridesmaids all best friends from different times of my life, Jess; Maid of Honour, Charlotte; Chief Bridesmaid, Liz, Becky and Abi; Bridesmaids. They all wore a mink midi slip dress from ASOS. They choose their own shoes and jewellery as I wanted them to feel individual, happy and comfortable throughout the day. They all looked beautiful on day, and did a great job organising my hen!
THE FLOWERS | We were so lucky that my God Mother Lucie Mulvaney is a dab hand with flower arranging, and generously offered to do our flowers as our wedding gift. It so nice having someone to go through choices, and who completely understood our vision. She put in a lot of time and effort, and we met up quite a few times even though she lives hundreds of miles away. We wanted a colourful array of many different flowers, which is exactly what we got. They were just perfect!
THE CAKE | Lewis’s friend from work, Robin made our cake for us, which was salted caramel brownie. We used it as part of our desert and it went down an absolute treat!
FOOD | Although we had a relaxed informal wedding, we still decided we wanted a sit down meal and canapés. Vanilla Bean were so helpful and professional from the word go, and personalised our menu with some yummy tastings. The food was delicious, especially the canapés – our friends still talk about them now!
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Kirsty MacKenzie was recommended to us by a friend, and we absolutely adored her style of photographs. On the day Kirsty seemed more like a friend, and we felt completely at ease, which has resulted in pictures we will treasure forever!
YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER | We knew the style we wanted for our video, which was a relaxed and non-cheesy vibe! Alice Underwood completely fitted that bill. We love her style, but the finished article was better than we could have imagined, she’s just amazing!
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We picked up ideas as we went along and brought things throughout the year of planning our wedding, so we didn’t have loads to get at the end. Everything needed to be organised separately, and we made a lot of our decorations, including the timings of day which was created using an old pallet, an arch with flowers which was created using twigs by a family friend, arrows symbolising where we have visited together, and the table plan made from a quirky map! We hired some fete games, and put bunting up and other personal decorations which really brought the wedding together.
THE HONEYMOON | We went the day after our wedding, which was desperately needed after all the stress running up to the wedding (we had only completed the sale on our house two weeks before getting married, so we were beyond busy!) We jetted off to Sri Lanka, and then to the Maldives for two weeks and it was the best and most memorable holiday ever!
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Stepping away just us two while the steel band was playing and looking over the wedding, and realising ‘We’ve done this!’. Mingling with friends and family with a prosecco in hand whilst eating the most amazing canapés!
And sneaking off for pictures at dusk!
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Try not to let others dictate what they think you should do, or who you should invite. It stressed us out quite a bit, but it’s your day and you should do what makes you happy, and be surrounded by the people that mean the most to you.
