WWW readers Grant and Lisa wed at The Wild Boar near Windermere in the Lake District on the 9th September 2017. Our pair added some really elegant and thoughtful details to a cosy and rustic setting, which made for a simply stunning day.
I’m so in love with Lisa’s Enzoani gown. Such a sleek and glamorous look and I’m a sucker for a fishtail dress with an extra long train. Grant looked equally dapper in his made to measure Whitfield & Ward three piece suit. I’m a big fan of seeing such an elegant gown teamed with wellies going over a stile too! Clothing seven bridesmaids is no mean feat, but they look just fabulous in their selection from ASOS.
Can we please talk about the amazing flowers too? From Lisa’s oversized bouquet complete with a variety of gorgeous blooms and feathers to the amazing reception displays, the florals really are on point. Colourful and slightly wild, it just goes to show that you can still get an autumnal look without sticking to reds and oranges.
Thank you so much Hayley Baxter for providing the absolutely beautiful images for us today, you’ve truly captured the autumn magic.
THE PROPOSAL | On 15th November 2014 we visited the Lake District with our best friends. Just the four of us booked in for a late lunch at L’enclume restaurant in Cartmel. The journey there wasn’t great through the windy roads and as soon as we arrived Grant was white as a sheet and needed fresh air. I just assumed he was hungover from the night before and told him he needed to pull himself together. We were greeted by the lovely Sam Ward who took us to our table. Having no idea what was to come we ordered our wine and course number one of five soon arrived… a dry ice dish with my Vera Wang ring placed beautifully in a nest of hay. Let’s just say course number one wasn’t edible.
THE VISION | From day one we wanted to fill the room with love. We are not particularly ‘flashy’ people and just wanted all those who matter celebrating our special day with us in one of our favourite places on earth, the Lake District. We sure did achieve this, it was the best day of our lives!
THE PLANNING PROCESS | As soon as we decided on the Lake District as the location we set about visiting a number of venues in the area. The Wild Boar stood out for us both, and after we’d tasted the food and had a walk up to the tarn, it was a no brainer for the reception. However, we both wanted to get married in church, so we contacted St Martin’s in Bowness-on-Windermere to enquire about tying the knot there. The reverend, James Richards, couldn’t have been more helpful and, as we’re not originally from the area, talked through what was needed in order for us to gain a ‘qualifying connection’.
After the venues were secured, there were still many sleepless nights to come but it was all worth it in the end, as the guests were quick to comment on the small details we added to make it the perfect day.
THE VENUE | St Martin’s Church, Bowness-on-Windermere, followed by The Wild Boar Inn, Crook, near Windermere.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My beautiful Enzoani Larissa dress along with my 3m veil. My shoes were from Steve Madden NYC, beautiful pink velvet with a chunky metallic gold heel. I wanted to keep my accessories to a minimum as my dress was the statement. I had ‘something old’ with a sixpence in my shoe, ‘something new’ with my beautiful diamond necklace, ‘something borrowed’ with my earrings and ‘something blue’ in my Vera Wang engagement ring.
FINDING THE DRESS | The search for my dress began in August 2016. I’m lucky to have a best friend who works in a wedding dress shop, J&J Designs in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. I tried over 15 dresses on one after the other and thought I’d narrowed my search down to two. However, I then decided to shop around as I didn’t want to rush into purchasing the first dress I saw. After searching far and wide I fell in love with my Enzoani dress from Mimi Toko in Duffield, Derbyshire. The ladies were so welcoming and made me feel like a princess. As soon as the dress touched my skin I knew it was ‘the one’. It sure had the WOW factor, with the most amazing lace train, and once Holly from The Sewing Room in Derbyshire worked her magic, it fitted like a glove.
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Grant wore a navy made-to-measure three-piece suit from Whitfield & Ward in Wilmslow, teamed with a white Hugo Boss shirt, Canali tie and a pair of Loake Royal oxblood brogues.
THE READINGS & MUSIC |We had two readings; “To be one with each other” – George Eliot (1819-1880) read by our bridesmaid Lisa, and “1 Corinthians 13” from the Bible, read by our friend Lucy.
The entrance of the bride was to “The Bridal March” from Lohengrin, by Richard Wagner. We left the church to “Wedding March” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by Felix Mendelssohn.
Our first dance was Band of Horses – ‘No one’s gonna love you more than I do’.
Our DJ was Mark Hepworth from Hi-Life Entertainment, The dance floor was never empty!
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had seven!!!! My three beautiful nieces and four best friends. My dresses were all from ASOS. I had three different styles and mixed my colours which worked really well. They all chose their own shoes from different stores – ASOS, New Look and Pretty Little Thing. They also chose their own jewellery and accessories.
THE FLOWERS | Katie from Made in Flowers, Kendal, absolutely smashed it. I asked her to go as wild as she could and put all my faith in her incredible handywork. After all she is the expert. Oh boy did she deliver. When she walked into the room the morning of the wedding my heart absolutely broke at my gorgeous flowers. They were so wild and beautiful with a few feathers thrown in for good measure. I have never seen flowers like them. I added four different ribbons for the finishing touch.
THE CAKE | Was from The bakery at Number 4 in Kendal, The Lake District. Three tiers; chocolate and Guinness, lemon, and Victoria Sponge. Delicious!
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The legendary Hayley Baxter. Hayley is so warm and welcoming and she blended in with the crowd as she captured our day. The sunset photo is by far my favourite. It was worth climbing the stile for as she lay in sheep muck!!!
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | To help our guests arrive in one piece, my family made a number of customised road signs. The Wild Boar is a real home from home – very rustic and cosy. We filled the room with colourful glassware and flowers. The table plan matched the invites, which the talented ‘Nova and Me’ made for us. Our guest book was Vera Wang and we made a wishing well for the guests to write us a message. The small things we did were appreciated by all the guests. Grant named his own beer for the men, providing mini batons for a drink reception, and the ladies had prosecco with a variety of berries from our ‘Berry Bar’ (My maiden name is Berry). Each guest had a Polaroid picture of them hung around the venue on fairy lights, and these provided a personal touch when we came to write the ‘thank you’ cards. The name cards were a colourwash marble effect from Paperchase and a family friend used her calligraphy skills to write each name. Each table had a ‘mint to be’ jar on them, filled with mint imperials. I provided a ‘freshen up’ basket in the toilet for the ladies, with everything you could imagine inside. Dry shampoo, tweezers, party feet/plasters, all sorts of wipes and not forgetting the good old faithful Impulse body spray! We hung a large polaroid photo frame for the guests to take a snap inside and personalised it with flowers. With the help of my mum, I provided a pair of flip flops for the ladies, so there was no excuse for them to leave the dance floor.
THE HONEYMOON | We are greedy and are having two. Our ‘mini moon’ was in Palma, Majorca. Then we are travelling to San Francisco, Colorado Springs and Chicago next February.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The whole day from start to finish!
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | It’s the only day you can put yourselves first. Remember it’s all about you two. Match your day to your personalities and try not to stress about the small things. Easier said than done I know!!!
