I love a unique wedding venue so when I saw that Natalie and Max who were married on the 14th September 2013 held their reception on a warship I was pretty excited. Added to this a march from the church to said venue with a band and you will see that their day was full of special moments.
They hoped to create a quirky yet understated wedding, with a nautical feel and pops of blue, everything just worked. They kept their décor simple with tasty cakes, swags of foliage and brown paper stationery.
Natalie wore Justin Alexander while Max donned Reiss and the girls French Connection, such a fashionable wedding party.
Thanks goes to the wonderful Natalie J Weddings for sharing her photographs with us.
THE PROPOSAL | Surprise visit to Scotland (a family holiday of Max’s) by a beautiful waterfall wearing wellies and a bobble hat – perfect.
THE VISION | A mix of traditional and quirky, something different and quite understated with lots of lights. The church was our bit of tradition; I loved the romance of a church. We then wanted an unusual venue which we could put our own stamp on. We ended up hiring an old docked warship which is used as the Essex Yacht club. British seaside with an ethereal twist. I kept saying I wanted it to look like an overgrown shipwreck, I’m not quite sure how much of that materialised but we had a lot of vines!
We had a walk down march from the church to the venue with a 4 piece band – one of my highlights of the day.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | We planned our wedding within 9 months, most of which was done in the final 3! As the venue was rarely used for weddings, all the main planning, outside of the catering was down to us.
BUDGET | 15K
THE VENUE | St Clement Church, Leigh on Sea – ceremony. Essex Yacht Club, Leigh on Sea – dinner & reception.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Justin Alexander, fitted fish tail lace. Plain ballet pumps, pearl earrings as a surprise gift from Max in the morning.
FINDING THE DRESS | I had an idea in my mind about the dress and luckily found it quite early on.
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Reiss suit, Hugo Boss shirt, Russell & Bromley Shoes, Hermes tie.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | French music in the church as guests arrived. Band on the walk down from the church to the venue and in the evening. A mix of 50’s R N B, Motown, Rockibily, Rock n Roll and modern pop for the dinner and evening.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Faye, Amy and Ru – all in a smokey blue. Dresses from French Connection.
THE FLOWERS | An amazing local florist called Penny Lanes in Leigh on Sea. A mother and daughter team, who transformed the venue. White and green all over, lots of gypsophila, daisies, hydrangeas, roses, lots of ivy/ vines. Bouquets were textured with herbs and berries.
THE CAKE | We didn’t go for a traditional wedding cake, instead opted for 3 large cakes from a local bakery. We had a Victoria sponge, Lemon and Chocolate.
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Natalie was our main photographer for the day and Millie was our second shooter. Both were such a pleasure to have around on the day and we couldn’t be happier with the results. We could not recommend them enough.
THE HONEYMOON | Max’s parent’s have a place in Majorca, so we spend 2 weeks there straight after the wedding. We both got our boat licences before the wedding, so spent most of our honeymoon on a boat fishing and relaxing.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The absolute highlight of the day for me was coming out of the church with the bells ringing and then surprising our guests with the band for the walk down. It was a great atmosphere and started the celebrations of perfectly.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Although having the freedom to elaborate on your ideas is a great thing to be able to do, not having a wedding venue as such is a lot of work and needs a lot of planning. So I would say just take time in planning and enjoy the build up as much as possible.
