I’d say the wedding was close-knit, colourful and full of love.

Hayley and John

This wedding gives me all the fresh, happy and loved up vibes today. WWW readers Hayley and John are joining us with their Pythouse Kitchen Garden wedding in Wiltshire, which was held on the 27th July 2019. Their day was a breath of fresh air; honest, authentic and close knit, it was all so beautiful.

Their focus was on creating a day that expressed them as a couple whilst showing their loved ones how much they meant to them. The resulting day was ever so meaningful and very pretty. They were married outdoors in a humanist wedding ceremony in the gardens, followed by an open sided marquee reception. They decked the tent in flowers, Nigella Lawson cook books and their own bespoke gin! You just have to look out for the flower adorned cake, it was a triumph. Also let’s not forget how gorgeous Hayley and John looked in their chosen outfits alongside their bridesmaids and groomsmen. So much style.

Jessica Hayman Photography thank you so very much for sharing these really stunning images.

The Proposal

Without a ring and much more than a few hours thought, John proposed on the last night of our holiday to Greece, on the beach at sunset. Neither of us can remember much of what he said as adrenaline took over, but it left us awe-(and love-)struck the whole evening. We flew back the next day and raced to the independent jewellers we lived above at the time and purchased the ring of my dreams.

The Vision

We wanted a wedding we could shape entirely to us and something that friends and family would recognise as being in line with our values and our love. We knew we would have a non-religious ceremony (Humanist) and so that opened options up for venues, especially where we wanted something outside but in small grounds since we were looking at a guest list of around 60.

Budget

All in, I think the wedding cost us about £15,000 (not including honeymoon or wedding rings) and gratefully, with the venue providing food, decorations, flowers and more, we kept the number of vendors we were working with to a minimum.

The Venue

We knew we wanted to get married local to where we had recently moved (Salisbury, Wiltshire) and that we wanted it to be casual, fun and somewhere we could visit again and again. Pythouse was the perfect find for us; it had beautiful gardens to explore and their focus was on good and sustainable food.

The Readings & Music

The ceremony was conducted fabulously by Liz who brought humour and warmth. We had readings spanning poems from centuries previous that family members had written, to a bespoke recipe ditty that marked the start of the drinking.

I walked down the aisle to an instrumental song from Hamilton (That Would Be Enough) and we left the ceremony together whilst Everything Now by Arcade Fire played – two songs that had come to mean so much to us.

Your Outfits & Accessories

I found my dress from David’s Bridal (US site) in one of those purchases that you *finally* make only after days and days of going back onto the site just to look at it. I had a feeling that I at least needed to try it on, even though I technically already had a dress, so I dutifully paid the US shipping fees and taxes. It arrived and I felt just as I had imagined I should. It was perfect for the venue with its delicate detailing and sequins and floral pattern but still very modern and casual. I also bought a denim Bride jacket from the same website and wore it from my hen do to my honeymoon!

We sought advice from friends who knew about men’s tailoring for John’s suit, settling on a bespoke fitted two-piece from Harris and Zei, designed to his tastes in a fairly simple blue. He finished the outfit with a waistcoat, shirt and tie from Next and Marks and Spencers.

Beauty

We had blow dries and bridal hair done at a local salon, Jas Hair. Waiting for us at home was the fabulous Claire Bowring who did our make up. We had a trial with Claire (and I’d had facials and skincare chats with her in the run up too) and she made us so comfortable and the best looking versions of ourselves – with mandatory red lip for me.

The Flowers

The flowers came from PKG, all put together on the day. They had our complete faith and so we left them with an open remit and on the day, were blown away with how beautiful the buttonholes and bouquets were.

Your Photographer

We had seen Jess’ work before and felt it was the perfect vibe for us; relaxed, fun and friendly. We had an engagement shoot with her which created some of my favourite photos of the whole engagement-wedding-honeymoon whirlwind. She left us totally at ease, able to help with advice, and we loved working with her.

The Details & Décor

The lovely Rachel at PKG coordinated the event at their end and we had a beautifully decorated marquee with lights and foliage to eat and celebrate in for after the ceremony.

One touch we added was to have the table names after my coveted collection of Nigella Lawson cookbooks – the absolute thrill of seeing them all laid out on the day was a personal highlight. As well as that, we had designed our own wedding gin with The Distillery and used these as the favours.

Bridesmaids

Also given free reign, the bridesmaids chose their dresses from Monsoon that were casual, floaty and suited all of them beautifully.

Groomsmen

After many unsuccessful trips to buy suits but nonetheless successful trips to the pub, with a little intervention from us, the groomsmen chose their suits from Suitsupply in London, in a shade of blue just off from the groom’s choice. The accessories were the same – from Next and Marks and Spencer.

The Cake

We opted for a simple vanilla and salted caramel cake, decorated in ‘house style’ with fresh flowers by the chefs at PKG. It was the most beautiful cake I’d ever eaten – shame John never managed to try any!

The Honeymoon

We flew off to New Orleans the Monday after the wedding; a dream destination for something a little bit different. We took in jazz music and ate more brunches in a 14 day period than necessary but it was the most wonderful spot for our honeymoon and somewhere we already can’t wait to return to.

Memorable Moments

There was heckling and laughing through the ceremony to the speeches; it makes me so happy to look back on the whole day and know we achieved something that people felt happy (and maybe drunk) enough to contribute to through these expressions of love and knowing us as a couple.

One specific moment is when the whole crowd clapped and cheered when John had his plate of chips delivered during the meal – a true sign they knew the thing closest to his heart.

Advice For Other Couples

Forget about how things are meant to be running and enjoy the moment you are in – I don’t once remember being nudged to move things along or have to get involved in the administrative detail of it, someone else is doing that for you so leave your worries at the door!

We made our wedding an expression of how much we cared about each other, as well as how much our guests meant to us as individuals; if you can show that to them, then they’ll have a brilliant day, whatever it entails.
