We think winter weddings are just wonderful here at Whimsical Wonderland Weddings for a few reasons. Firstly, winter is out of season and you can really save some money on your celebration as many venues and suppliers offer special wedding discounts. Then there are the cosy and atmospheric vibes that winter brings, perfect for fires, fairy lights and sweet warming touches. Plus it gives something to really look forward to in those wintry months and in years to come for those anniversary celebrations of course. You never know, you may be lucky enough to be greeted by a dusting of magical snow too.
The team of creatives gathered together by wedding planner and stylist Songbird Weddings and Events brought to life a winter wonderland wedding. Think blue and gold luxe colour palette, twinkling lights and decadent floral creations. The dessert table really is out of this world and would bring real wow factor to any wedding or indeed event. Beautiful bride and groom looks, striking tablescapes and pretty paper to name a few. This shoot really has so many wedding ideas and inspiration for you all, all captured just perfectly by Sarah Brookes Photography.
Luxe Winter Wedding Ideas
“From the minute I was invited to see Branches Park I was enchanted. As a new tipi and marquee venue and a new home to the owners so much of it is untouched. It is these undiscovered venues that really excite me as a wedding planner. As we walked around I kept catching glimpses of the derelict pump house and as soon as I saw it I knew I had to do a styled shoot here (despite the owners thinking I had gone slightly mad). The gardens are unkempt and wild in parts but that’s what I love about this venue. It reminded me of the childhood story Secret Garden where Mary discovers a hidden garden and slowly brings it back to life.
When I reached out to suppliers with my mood board I was so excited by the amazing reaction it got and we very quickly had an incredible team together. Everyone brought their ideas and energy and worked tirelessly on the day to bring the vision to life. We owe the fantastic images to Sarah Brookes Photography and the video footage to the incredible Jade from Hushabye Films who fought the light in tricky conditions to get the right ambience for the shoot.
As we knew we would be shooting in Winter we decided to go for an earthy and moody style, which would complete the natural setting that we were in. I decided to use a blue and gold colour scheme but rather than the traditional luxury bright golds and blues we wanted to do it in a more discrete colour palette. This was the biggest challenge from a styling perspective as one wrong shade completely changed the look of the table or area we were styling (or perhaps that was just me obsessing?!).”
“We started the shoot by focusing on our Groom, Will, who was suited and booted in the Harrogate suit from The Vintage Suit Hire Company. The Harrogate suit has a feint grey herringbone pattern which complimented the classic bridal gown whilst allowing the groom to show some of his personality. We have seen an increasing trend of Grooms self-driving their dream car to their weddings and then whisking their bride away in it at the end of the night. It is another area of the wedding where the groom can really show his own personality. Cambridge Wedding Cars were kind enough to lend us both their e type Jaguar and their classic Bentley. This allowed us to capture the fun contrast between a Bride being brought to the wedding by her father in a formal classic car and then being driven away by her new husband.”
“The bride, the lovely Anna from Shades of White, was modelling one of their own gowns. It is a new season collection from Justin Alexander. Total Hollywood glamour, this understated gown is a soft chantilly lace, with accents of beaded embroidered lace on the shoulders and into the waist line. The demure v neck is replicated with a deep v back, finishing with a chapel length train. Anna’s hair and make-up was done by Finn Jordan Bridal who went for a soft whimsical fairytale hairstyle to suit the venue. Braids have been a really popular hairstyle and meant that her hair could tumble down and be encapsulated within the v of the back of the dress. Finn Jordan kept the make-up fresh. The bride had beautiful eyes so Finn Jordan kept the lips natural to draw focus back into the eyes, which they highlighted with a slight rose gold.”
“I knew early on that the flowers were going to be a make or break element. Luckily, we had Cathy from The Midnight Garden Flower Farm on hand. Cathy is not only a florist but grows British flowers for the floristry industry at the walled gardens at Branches Park. We talked a lot about thistles being the perfect example of a discreet blue and coupling that with heavy foliage. As Cathy’s garden has stopped flowering for the season Cathy used British Grown flowers from Cornwall. Cathy said “I love to work with these flowers and they were the perfect look for this shoot where I wanted to create a look that merged with the natural setting of Branches Park”.”
“Couples are always looking for elements within their wedding that allow them to show their personality and bring in their wedding scheme. One of the areas that is increasing in popularity is a dessert table rather than one large display cake. Dolly’s Vintage Tea Party teamed up with Keen for Cakes to create this lavish cake table display. The abandoned green house created an enchanting back drop with its twining ivy and rustic wood frame. Hayley, from Dolly’s Vintage took inspiration from the luxurious deep colours of the peacock and pheasant feathers that she used within her composition. Complimenting and creating balance with the setting by using textiles of draping velvet, lace, rich gold frames and vintage prop details. All of which were sensitively styled alongside succulents and foliage on her mahogany dresser and Persian rug. Heathers exquisite cakes were displayed on Hayley’s collection of gold embellished cake stands .The cake design was based on the rustic buttercream style given a unique twist with the ‘pop’ of colour provided by the lilac roses, which tied in with the bluey purple tinges of the succulents and blue eucalyptus. The cake display was tied in with the peacock theme by use of the teal and lilac colours of the the macarons, which were given an opulent twist by use of the 24 carat edible gold leaf. The end look was a rustic desert table display with an opulent luxurious twist.”
“We couldn’t resist doing a naked tipi set-up by the lake at Branches Park as it is another potential ceremony space for couples to use. We wrapped deep blue fabric around the tipi to pull it together with the other styled areas whilst also adding some colour to separate the tipi from the rest of the natural surroundings. We left the fabric fairly loose so that it could catch the wind. The flowers used in the arrangements were the same but the foliage in the bouquet and arch were slightly more formal whereas for the tipi The Midnight Garden Flower Farm created a wilder look with the use of ferns and Clematis seed heads.
The pathway from the tipi ceremony area to the meadow where the weddings would be held has a stunning walkway of deep green trees which hang over you like a ceiling. Dawn from Bunting 2 Hire had the idea of decorating the walkway with bunting and lights. Dawn looked for a fabric which would complement the rural setting and selected a leaf embroiled net fabric in a duck egg blue. She stitched in some lights to lift the whole display and we think it looked fabulous!”
“The table was styled by Songbird Weddings and Events. They used a reclaimed wooden table and chairs from Anthology Vintage Hire. The tables have such a stunning tone to the wood it complemented the styling of the table perfectly. The long thin mixed metal candlesticks from Songbird were intended to give the table a modern twist. We selected coloured glass to bring all of the colour elements together and a matt gold plate setting to achieve our discrete and moody look. Folly and Gander created stationery to fit in with the scheme and made hand calligraphy place names on the naturally deep blue mussel shells. The table was completed with a fabulous central table arrangement made by The Midnight Garden Flower Farm, again bringing the muted blues from the thistles and heavy foliage.”
“We mocked up a ceremony space in the derelict pump house using a warm light curtain backdrop and wedding arch from Songbird Weddings and Events to contrast with the beautiful trailing ivy and old brick work. We then used mismatch chairs and benches from Anthology Vintage Hire which we softened with deep blue and grey faux fur throws to give it a warm and cosy feel. The Midnight Garden Flower Farm decorated the arch with foliage and included pops of white colour to lift it and a large floor arrangement to draw the eye towards the couple. The Midnight Garden Flower Farm also created foliage garland pew ends to add texture to the aisle.
We finished the day off with a twinkle in our eyes … Luna Glitter Bar sparkled up our bride and guests with delicate and fine sparkle in soft metallic shades. Luna used jewel collars and gold for guests to match the colour scheme and chest gems for the bride. Glitter face paint is becoming increasingly popular and is a great way of transitioning your wedding from the formality of the dinner to the relaxed and care-free evening celebrations. Even the most reserved cannot help but get a rush of childlike freedom when their face in covered in glitter. Get ready for your guests to let their hair down and party.”
