There really isn’t much not to love about this gorgeous Lodge Farm wedding in Hertfordshire. For starters it’s so super lovely to hear that WWW readers Katie and J used our resources, both our free wedding planning spreadsheets and our wedding directory, where they found their photographer David Boynton Wedding Photography. I must also say that the images are just stunning and I am so thankful to be sharing them with you today.
Katie and J were married on the 20th July 2019 with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony within the trees, against a very pretty foliage arch. They then celebrated in tipis provided by another WWW fave; Country Tipis. The tipis looked amazing with their personal touches and lots of greenery to decorate. Didn’t Katie and J look really cool? Katie wore a beaded Maggie Sottero gown with flowers in her hair and J wore a smart trouser and shirt combo with braces. Amazing! Enjoy this really wonderful and fun day you guys.
J got down on one knee on the last day of our holiday to Mexico in December 2017. After carrying the ring around in his swim shorts for two weeks, he finally popped the question! I immediately said yes through a stream of happy tears and he then explained he had been trying to do it for the past two weeks but various things had kept ruining it including me jokingly saying ‘you going to propose to me now!’ Whoops!
I have always dreamt of getting married but hadn’t really thought about the planning side. We knew we wanted a tipi or something outside which was quite relaxed where everyone just enjoyed themselves with some tasty food and drink! Luckily, I think this is exactly what we got with the support of some amazing, local suppliers.
The Planning Process
We enjoyed being engaged for a month or so over Christmas and then January 2018, the planning began with visiting a few venues and seeing what was on offer. I started with downloading Whimsical Wonderland Weddings spreadsheets to plan what we needed and what our budget looked like. As we were pretty laid back at the start, it wasn’t until March that we attended our first tipi open day and we were hooked! Country Tipi’s just looked so incredible both inside and out so we knew that this was going to be the route we’d go down. Once we knew the style we wanted, all the other bits started falling into place and we met all the local suppliers who helped us arrange our perfect day.
Let’s just say I think we spent double what we planned too! But we wouldn’t have changed a thing and the memories made were more than worth it.
My make up was done by the amazing Stephanie Hemmings who was recommended to me by one of my best friends. Steph was so lovely and knew exactly what we all wanted. She also knew how to have a giggle which calmed a few nerves on the morning!
I was a little unsure where to go for my hair but found Emma on Instagram. Again, she was so wonderful with styling and so lovely to have there on the day. I decided against having a veil but Emma cleverly weaved some foliage and flowers into my hair which was just what I wanted.
Two very talented ladies!
Your Outfits & Accessories
We started searching for THE DRESS quite early on as I am a bit of a picky customer. We started off going to Migonette in Slipend, Bedfordshire as my Mum knew a few people who had been here. I had a slight idea of what I wanted but was also looking for some advice. Jane who owns Migonette was absolutely amazing – I didn’t want to leave. I tried on lots of different styles but then showed her a couple of photographs that I had saved on my Pinterest boards… she then came downstairs with the same dress and I loved it. A Maggie Sottero slip dress and beaded overlay that made me feel amazing…but being the cautious girl I am, I decided to look elsewhere before I made my decision. To cut a long story short, after 5 other bridal shops and a few tears, I went back to Jane to try THE dress again, and loved it more than before.
We actually first saw our venue, Lodge Farm, on a post on Whimsical Wonderland Weddings. I got in touch with the lovely Maria over email and she was keen for us to visit but had to wait until the winter had passed. We then went on to meet Laura at a separate wedding fair and she said she was the event manager for Lodge Farm. It was meant to be! Being so impressed by Laura and photographs we had seen at Lodge Farm, we took the plunge and booked without viewing as we wanted a summer wedding and didn’t want to miss out. And I am so glad that we did.
From the moment we met both Laura and Maria, they were so incredibly welcoming – it was like planning with old friends we’d known for years. The grounds were absolutely stunning and the tipi looked amazing amongst the beautiful surroundings of Lodge Farm. We chose to get married outside in the Secret Garden and it was just so special surrounded by all of our loved ones.
They only do one wedding a week so it was lovely to have the flexibility of setting up on the Friday and then staying over in the gorgeous house on the Friday evening. We then woke up to a tasty continental breakfast on the morning of the wedding which was needed to calm a few nerves! The morning after the wedding, both of our families had stayed over and we had a family full English breakfast which was delicious! The most perfect venue!
The Readings & Music
We struggled a little with music as we both have very different tastes and don’t just have one song. We decided on Ben Howard – Old Pine as my entrance song… and then were meant to have ‘The Beatles – All You Need is Love’ for our walk out, however there was a slight technical hitch so we had cheers and applause from our friends and family.
We had three readings – He’s not Perfect by Bob Marley – read by my wonderful friend Hannah, then Always Love Each Other by Larry Chengges read by my best friend Michelle. J’s Mum then read ‘On Your Wedding Day’ which was so lovely to hear after we’d just read our vows. My Dad closed the ceremony with a blessing he had written which was very emotional and meant so much.
We met our Florist, Kerry – Foxgloves & Alice at a wedding fayre quite early on and she was exactly what we were looking for. I knew I wanted lots of foliage and natural flowers and Kerry’s style was exactly this. We spent many evenings in her studio chatting over ideas, what we’d like and how we can make the most of our budget. She was so easy to talk to and again, felt like a friend by the time the big day came round. The tipi looked absolutely amazing full of foliage, our flower hoop as well as the last minute foliage around the arbour where we said our vows. Our bouquets were so beautiful too and it all just came together thanks to Kerry’s creativity.
We found our photographer – David Boynton on WWW’s Supplier Love page. We knew his style was exactly what we wanted – and we weren’t disappointed. David and Ryan (Videographer) fitted in as soon as they arrived and felt like one of our guests throughout the whole day.
The final photos are so special and they’ve caught all of the amazing moments of the day!
From the moment I knew J was ‘the one’, I knew that I would have my sister and his sister as my bridesmaids. We decided to start ordering some from ASOS to see what they were like so after we had our hair trial, Charlotte and Leah started trying on what we’d ordered. It didn’t last very long though, as they both absolutely loved the first one they tried and looked completely gorgeous too!
The dresses were from Maya on ASOS.
Not being an owner of suits, J was always unsure what he would go for in terms of his outfit. After several recommendations, J booked to meet with The Vintage Suit Hire Company who completely understood what he wanted on the first visit! My Dad and the Best Man also hired suits from there too – they all looked great!
The Details & Décor
We really enjoyed adding all the little extras to our day. We made all of the signs, place names, table numbers ourselves which I really enjoyed! We chose to have some photo booth props and a DIY sweet table which was really easy to put together. We didn’t have heaps of decorations as we thought the tipi and foliage did the job for us! We loved the overall look and were so happy when it all came together.
We secretly booked The Singing Waiters after seeing them at a friends wedding a few years ago. With the day being so busy, we actually forgot we’d booked them so it was a surprise when they started singing. It was so entertaining and everyone got involved with all of the songs including everyone on their feet for Robbie Williams, Angels!
Our videographer was Ryan who works alongside David (photographer). Again, his work was amazing and we are so glad we chose to have a video. His style was exactly what we wanted and we absolutely loved watching the film back after our big day. We love that we can see the day in another way seeing lots of little parts that we may have missed.
After the wedding, we went off to our favourite place, Cornwall for 5 days. It was such a perfect getaway after a hectic week before. We decided to wait until 2020 for our big honeymoon and have got two weeks in the Seychelles to look forward too which just extends the wedding excitement for a little longer :)
- My Dad seeing me in my dress for the first time – a special moment (Katie)
- Both J and my Dad’s speech – they were amazing and both did so well!- especially J as he’s not used to public speaking. There were laughs and tears! (Katie)
- Definitely, the singing waiters and non-stop laughter. And of course, seeing Katie walking down the aisle. (J)
Advice For Other Couples
Remember, whilst planning, that its about the two of you and stick together.
Everyone says it, but take a second on the day to take it all in – it’s the one day that you’ll see all of your fabulous family and friends in the same place. That’s a special thing!
