Those summer days are so tantalisingly close now aren’t they? We had a little taster back in April and those long hazy days are sure to be back before we know it. If you are craving a spot of sunshine and balmy evenings, then this real wedding will be sure to transport you in an instant today.
Cosy, personal and intimate was how WWW readers Matt and Lizzie described their wedding to me, which sounds utterly perfect. With a childhood on a farm Lizzie wanted to bring an essence of summer farm days to their wedding celebrations. When they came across Cripps Barn in the Cotswolds, they knew it was the perfect spot, thanks to its spectacular surrounding countryside and amazing food offering. They set the date for the 26th August 2017, the bank holiday weekend and set about planning. Their planning journey sounded a breeze, partly thanks to their brilliant suppliers and stress free attitude.
So just what do I love about their day? Everything from the outfits to the florals really looked incredible. I mean Lizzie’s Anna Campbell dress was just exquisite and Matt’s Ted Baker attire very dapper indeed. The flowers included lavender, wheat and peonies, which really looked amazing. The installations in the ceremony room really took my breath away too. Their day was just so thoughtful and filled with love, so I think you will really appreciate their detailed report at the end of this feature.
Many thanks goes to Jo Bradbury for providing the remarkably beautiful imagery here today. What a dream.
THE PROPOSAL | Matt and I share the same birthday and for my 30th Matt surprised me and whisked me off to Istanbul. Apparently he wanted to propose on our actual birthday but he couldn’t persuade me to leave the roof top cocktail bar. Matt had been trying to find the perfect spot for days, carrying the ring in his pocket and paranoid that he would get found out. When Matt found the perfect spot between the Blue Mosque and The Aiya Sofia, I was blown away and incredibly surprised, I even forgot to say yes for about a minute or two!
THE VISION | We were definite that we wanted our wedding to feel like us, we wanted cosy and understated with very good food. Lizzie grew up on a farm and although her family no longer farms she still wanted to capture some of the essence of balmy summers spent on the farm.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | We knew we wanted a hazy, lazy, summer wedding and were actually incredibly lucky with the great British weather to get exactly that, especially as our wedding was over the August Bank Holiday. On the whole the planning process was largely stress free mostly due to the amazing suppliers we used. Early on we decided what was important to us and didn’t get stressed out about the little details.
BUDGET | We prioritised what was important to us and spent our budget here and cut back on the aspects that we were less passionate about.
THE VENUE | Cripps Barn, Bibury. The moment we visited Cripps we knew it was perfect. We loved how it felt like we were the only people in the world while at the venue. There were rolling hills as far as the eye could see and you felt as if you were in your own little world. The amazing food at Cripps sealed the deal; we loved the simple, rustic food cooked immaculately.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress was by Anna Campbell, I loved the way that she mixed intricate detailing with a vintage, laid back feel. My veil was from nymphi designs and my shoes were from Dune. My mum bought me a pearl bracelet to wear and on the morning of the wedding. Matt sent a surprise package containing champagne and beautiful pair of diamond earrings.
FINDING THE DRESS | I knew pretty early on that I had my heart set on an Anna Campbell dress and jumped at the chance to go to an Anna Campbell trunk show at Perfect Day Bridal. I loved the intricate detailing that somehow felt both vintage and relaxed.
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Matt’s suit was from Ted Baker and the very talented Anna Magro tailored the suit so it fitted perfectly.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | Lizzie studied Chinese in China and so we chose a passage from by Lao Tzu, our second reading was from Paola Coelo’s The Alchemist, a favourite book of ours. Lizzie walked into the ceremony by REM’s shiney happy people, while we walked out Bob Dylan’s I want you. While the register was being signed our band The Hot Hats, played you do something to me by Paul Weller.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My beautiful bridesmaids were my oldest friend from school, Angelina, my best friend from uni Caroline, two wonderful friends who were once workmates, Gemma and Sam and my gorgeous sister in law Rose. They wore dresses from Jenny Packham at Debenhams. Angelina found out she was expecting a beautiful little bundle after we bought the dresses and the wonderful ladies at the Seamstresses magically created her a new dress to match the other maids.
THE FLOWERS | We just fell in love with the floral style of Beth Cox at Go Wild Flowers, we loved the laid back, rustic but super beautiful creations that she made. Beth often works at Cripps Barn and knew exactly how flowers could compliment the already gorgeous venue. Beth was such a wonderful and caring florist, in fact I shed my first tears of the wedding day when she arrived at the hotel with the bridal bouquets and button holes.
THE CAKE | Matt’s super talented sister Katharine made our delicious cake for us, it was a classic semi naked victoria sponge filled with raspberry jam made by my mum.
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Jo Bradbury was our photographer and we could not recommend her highly enough. We have had so many compliments from our guests not just about the beauty of her work but also how lovely she was. Jo instantly put us at ease and we have photographs that we truly treasure and that really reflex our day and us perfectly.
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We loved the muted tones of Cripps Barn and so chose a muted palette of lavender grey as ‘our colour’. Lizzie’s Nan loved lavender and so having the soft scent of lavender in the day gave a little nod to her.
Matt is an artist so he designed all the wedding invites and orders of service, which incorporated all our wedding flowers.
Lizzie’s brother made a cute little signpost to point guests to the barn.
We loved that Cripp’s allowed the party to spill outside and so as wedding favours we gave everyone marshmallow kebabs to roast on the fire pit and bonfires outside.
We love sharing meals with our families and friends and so Cripp’s way of serving food that is carved and shared at the table, was perfect for the friendly, laid back vibe we were after, it was also a perfect way to break the ice for tables where everyone didn’t know each other.
THE HONEYMOON | Our honeymoon took a lot of thought. We knew we wanted to go to Asia however Lizzie had spent a lot of time there whereas Matt had never been. Lizzie wanted to experience something very different whereas Matt wanted to have the total desert island experience. So we are spending a day in Beijing, before travelling to Tibet by train where we will explore Lhasa, the temples of Shigatse and Everest Base Camp before spending a week of pure relaxation in the Maldives.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The first time I saw Matt, it was a magical moment and we couldn’t stop grinning at each other during the whole ceremony. It felt like we were the only people in the room.
Our speeches were so special, Matt, his best man Matt and my dad did beautiful speeches. Our great friends (and one of my gorgeous Bridesmaids) Caroline and Mael, brought the French tradition of animations to our wedding day and we loved playing a game with all our guests after dinner.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Enjoy the planning, we tried to make events and dates out of all our wedmin, we tied our food tasting into a weekend away to celebrate our birthdays and took Lizzie’s granny down to meet Beth, our florist which she really enjoyed. We loved having so many fun events to look forward to while planning and it really kept us excited for the day throughout the whole planning period. Our we wedding was all about us, so we were determined to enjoy every moment of the day and the lead up to it.
