I love the industrial feel to this wedding today thanks to the quirky metalworks venue in London. Not to mention the array of colours, fun moments and smiles aplenty.
Dan and Sam were married on the 16th April 2016 at Stoke Newington Town Hall followed by a relaxed reception at Islington Metalworks. Music was the focus with meaningful songs used during the ceremony, vinyl invitations, song table names and a live band to get the party well and truly started.
Sam chose the beautifully beaded ‘Beckett’ by Sottero and Midgley to say I do in and she looked stunning. I especially adore her coral peony bouquet which was a real show-stopper. The maids wore grey Coast frocks while Dan wore the same hue suit.
Thanks so very much to Marianna Chua for sharing these wonderful images with us.
THE PROPOSAL | Dan proposed. It was a Saturday night and we were off to a local Greek restaurant with 20 friends to celebrate my 30th birthday. We were sat in the restaurant and one of my friends saw our 18 month old son come into the restaurant with my mum, who was babysitting. I instantly thought something was wrong, but then the music changed from some tacky Greek music, to mine and Dan’s song. I still hadn’t clocked that anything was going on and then realised that Dan had left the table. At this point, he followed our son into the restaurant. Dan got down on one knee and opened the ring box. The initial idea was that our son gave me a card saying, “Will you marry Daddy?” but I didn’t take it, thinking it was a birthday card!
The proposal came as a complete surprise. So much so, I asked if he was joking!
Dan said he had wanted the proposal to be a complete surprise and knew that I would never expect him to do it in front of all of our friends, in a small local restaurant. His plan succeeded and caught me totally off guard! Perfect!
THE VISION | We wanted city wedding, with our closest family and friends during the day and a big party to celebrate in the evening.
We love music so knew that music had play a massive part in our day!
THE PLANNING PROCESS | We got engaged in the October so only had 6 months before the wedding. Luckily, we agreed on exactly what we wanted and everything seemed to work perfectly without any hiccups, so it was great fun planning it all!
THE VENUE | We had our wedding ceremony at Stoke Newington Town Hall. It was lovely inside and perfect for what we wanted; a relaxed and intimate ceremony.
For our wedding reception; after researching some London venues, arranged to go and look at the Islington Metal Works near Angel. We went to view the venue one afternoon, with the idea that we would then go and look at some more venues but we didn’t end up going to visit any more, as we fell in love with Islington Metal Works straight away. It fitted perfectly for our music theme, we could decorate it how we wanted it, but ultimately it was such an unusual and quirky venue. All of our guests commented on how fantastic the place was and we certainly weren’t disappointed!
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress was a beaded Sottero and Midgley dress called Beckett.
My shoes were from Rainbow Club.
My hair was done by my usual hairdresser, Sophie Bryan and my make up was done by Amanda Scruby. I absolutely loved both my hair and make up!
All jewellery were things that Dan had bought for me in the past.
FINDING THE DRESS | I found my dress on the first trip! I wanted to try on as many as possible and was very open minded. After trying on quite a few, my sister picked out a dress. Before the dress was done up I knew I loved it, and when I saw it in the full length mirror, I cried. I knew this was the dress I would be wearing, but went away for an hour or so to think about it and went back to try it on again that afternoon and ordered it.
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Dan wore a grey suit and tie, white shirt and black shoes from TM Lewin. He wore customised silver cufflinks – a gift from me.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | Every song throughout our ceremony was a song that is special to us.
We had speeches after dinner from the Father of the Bride, Dan and his two best men. I had written a poem about Dan and I as a surprise, which I asked Dan’s sister to read for us. My sister had then made a video about Dan and I. The speeches were so funny but emotional and had everybody in tears.
We had spent ages creating playlists that reflected our love of music to play throughout dinner and into the evening. For the party we had live music from a band called Co-Jones. They were absolutely brilliant. They had everybody up on the dance floor all night.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My three beautiful bridesmaids (sister, cousin and best friend) wore dresses from Coast. In some lights they looked grey, in some they looked blue and in some they looked green. They all looked gorgeous!
THE FLOWERS | The flowers were beautiful and went really well with the bridesmaid colours. The bridesmaids and I had bouquets with avalanche roses, peonies and tulips with silver foliage.
THE CAKE | We didn’t have a wedding cake, but had a cheese table instead and my sister and friend made some lovely cupcakes.
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographer, Marianne, was just amazing! She was like one of our guests, fitted in perfectly and we didn’t even know she was there. It was exactly what we wanted. She was so helpful throughout the morning, running flowers between us and the men. We couldn’t be happier with our photos. They tell the exact story of our day.
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Our music theme ran throughout the wedding. We had made vinyl invitations and our table names were named after our favourite band’s songs.
The beauty of the Islington Metal Works is that they take care of all of the décor for you. They asked about our theme and what we would like and had endless options to make our wedding unique. We chose to have the place decorated colourfully, and had vinyl hanging from the ceiling to continue our music theme.
THE HONEYMOON | We had a ‘mini-moon’ to Venice, just the two of us and have a ‘family-moon’ booked with our son.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Every second was memorable. We couldn’t choose!
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Be selfish – do exactly what you want to do for your day!
