Hello everyone, my name is Catherine and I’m a professional make-up artist based in Surrey. Today I’ll be giving you my tried-and-tested tips on how to get that glamorous J-Lo style glow for Summer 2019!

If you are very pale and feel self-conscious in the summer as a result, don’t be afraid to fake tan! You’ve just got to prep your skin properly and do the whole process very carefully, to get an amazing result without the usual gravy coloured streaks..!

Firstly and most importantly, you must remove any unwanted hair, and exfoliate your whole body with a gritty exfoliator and/or a shower puff or muslin cloth the day before you intend to do your fake tan. Make sure to concentrate on your elbows, knees, feet and hands, as most people seem to have drier skin in these areas and fake tan will most definitely stick to it. Then a short while later, apply some body lotion, again concentrating on your elbows, knees, feet and hands.

The next day, apply your fake tan of choice evenly all over (except your feet and hands), blending very thoroughly. Then wash your hands thoroughly, using soap and a scrubbing brush on your palms.

About an hour or two later, use a large make-up brush to blend a very small amount of the fake tan onto your hands and feet, making sure to blend it all out super carefully, and painting a teeny amount between your fingers so you don’t have white gaps! I always do my feet and hands last, as they always seem to go a much darker colour.

My all-time favourite fake tan (and goodness knows, I’ve tried them all!) is Clarins Instant Self Tanning Gel, and I also like their Self Tanning Milky Lotion. If you’re very fair or are a newbie at self tanning (or just nervous about the whole process), the St Tropez Gradual Tan Tinted is a great option as you can see where you’re putting it, and Tan-Luxe The Butter is lovely and subtle too.

I love a slightly shimmery cream bronzer in the summer to enhance what little tan I have..! Although it’s not actually a bronzer, Benefit Watt’s Up stick is perfect for warming up your skin tone if you’re very pale. MILK Make-up Matte Bronzer in ‘Baked’ gives a pretty warmth to fair to medium skin tones, while MILK Make-up Matte Bronzer in ‘Blaze’ is perfect for medium to dark skin tones.

If you prefer to use a powder bronzer, The Body Shop Honey Bronzer and Fenty Beauty Sun Stalk’r Instant Warmth Bronzer both come in a great range of shades for all skin tones. I also highly recommend Benefit Hoola Lite for fair skin tones, and NARS Bronzing Powder in ‘Laguna’ for medium to dark skin tones.

Next you need a beautiful highlighter to bring light to your cheekbones and brow bones. Smashbox LA Lights Blendable Lip & Cheek Colour in ‘Hollywood and Highlight’ gives a super pretty pearly glow to fair skin tones, while NARS Illuminator in ‘Hot Sand’ is perfect for medium skin tones.

If you prefer a powder highlighter, try one with a creamy finish so that it doesn’t look too dusty under bright sunlight – Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed comes in a fab range of shades.

Warm bronze tones on the eyes always look glam in the summer and will warm up a tanned look even further. A simple wash of a cream eyeshadow in a bronze tone all over your lids will look pretty and effortless – try Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerize in ‘Bette’, or Maybelline Colour Tattoo in ‘On and on Bronze’ for a great long-lasting budget alternative.

Another way to make a tan pop is to pair it with a bright lipstick, which instantly looks summery and effortless, if paired with minimal eye make-up. Perhaps try a pretty coral such as NARS Audacious Lipstick in ‘Juliette’ or Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipstick in ‘Sexy Sienna’, or perhaps even a neon pink such as Maybelline ‘Fuchsia Flash’ if you’re feeling brave!

Body make-up – which was very popular in the nineties and early noughties – is making a real comeback at the moment!

I personally love L’Oreal Glow Mon Amour Highlighting Drops, which are technically for the face but actually look amazing on the collarbones, shoulders and down the centre of the shins to make your body look slimmer and your skin look super glowy.

You could also try Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body, Fenty Beauty Body Lava or the classic Scott Barnes Body Bling, as used by the queen of glow herself, Jennifer Lopez.

So there you have it, six ways to amp up your glow this summer…have fun out there, and always remember to hydrate and use sun screen :)
