East London Wedding
Urban, International, Colourful and Relaxed
Ines and Nate
We are in super cool East London today for Ines and Nate’s city affair held on the 3rd August 2019. They held their ceremony in the Council Chamber at Islington Town Hall before hopping on a double decker bus to celebrate their union at Clapton Country Club. Their day oozes style and relaxed vibes, not to mention a lot of colour. There were multicoloured flowers, a bright berry laden semi naked cake and amazing outfits all round. I just love that Ines and Nate invited their international guests to wear their traditional dress, they all looked so brilliant.
Talking of outfits didn’t Ines look gorgeous in her bridal separates from Catherine Deane? Not to mention Nate’s really incredible linen hand embroidered guayabera. They looked both looked so wonderful and super loved up to boot.
Huge thanks goes to the fantastic Marianne Chua Photography for sharing her totally awesome images with us. What a fun day!
No formal proposal … a log term decision that we finally found time and money to go through with.
Having a party with all our families and friends, due to both of our cultural heritages the plan was to celebrate in Washington, Malaysia and Germany but London was our main focus. We both went to Uni here and have lived here for over a decade so most of our friends were already here and made logistics easy.
The Planning Process
We started by setting a budget and discussing the guest list first. We took one decision at a time (dictated by weather we could afford it or not). We started by booking the venue approximately 10 months in advance. It took us nearly 2 months to find a nice and affordable venue in London that met our standards and vision. From there we started thinking about catering (provided by the venue) and entertainment.
The Ceremony was held in Council Chamber of Islington Town Hall.
The Reception: Clapton Country Club is a unique East London venue in which we celebrated your marriage in authentic urban, yet glamorous, surroundings.
The kitchen creates great food with a strong ethos on organic, biodynamic and sustainability. Their list of fine wines share the same values and have been sourced at length, to make sure they do justice to the food and environment.
Clapton Country Club was originally built as a wedding venue for the owners, so romance oozes from every lick of paint!
The Readings & Music
Due to our multicultural heritage we had a reading in:
- German: extract from the Little Prince
- English: Bruce Springsteen song lyrics (favourite song of the groom)
- Spanish extract form 100 years of solitude Gabriel Garcia Marquez
10,000- 15,000 pounds
Your Outfits & Accessories
Bride: Catherine Deane
I chose the Itala top is for the modern, laid back bride, looking to add a fashion forward twist to a classic style. This delicate lace cover up features a floral design, dainty scalloped sleeves and a cropped trim that sits just above the waist for a unique yet romantic bridal look. I paired it with the Dee skirt. Cut from Catherine Deane’s signature draped silk chiffon, the skirt natural falls from the waist perfectly to just below the knee. I found this brand through Instagram browsing and did not want something over the top, I felt really comfortable in it and wore it throughout the day.
Groom: As his main goal was to represent his heritage he went for a beautiful authentic 100% linen guayabera – handmade by indigenous women of Merida Yucatan, Mexico. The guayabera is hand embroidered in Oaxaca, Mexico with beautiful decorative designs originating from this region, that add a delicate and formal touch. This combined with the elegant features, the hand pleated detail, and mother of pearl buttons, makes the guayabera a garment great for special occasions of all kinds!
Initially I got in touch with Lauren Irwin who said she was fully booked but was able to put me in touch with a member of her team: Helen Roche. She came to my flat the month before the wedding to find out exactly what look I was after and do a trial run of hair and make-up. On the actual day she also did the hair and make up for my sister (maid of honour) and mum.
I wanted a summery and fruity cake so asked Selina Sekhon from the Glorious Bakery (small business in East London found on Instagram) to create a three tier semi- naked cake decorated with fresh fruits and berries. Each tier had a different flavour
- Almond sponge and raspberry
- Coconut sponge with passion fruit
- The Hummingbird
She delivered the cake to the venue in the morning and it was all gone in the afternoon everyone loved the cake and took many pictures of it.
I wanted to support a local small business and found Helena Willcocks from The Allotment Florist on Instagram. The reason I chose her is because her organic approach to floristry. Her aim is for every arrangement to look and feel as if it has been freshly picked from the garden, in addition she had previously been working with my wedding venue so was really familiar with what look I was going for.
I found the award-winning documentary photographer Marianne Chua on Instagram while following Say I Do Islington page on Instagram. We had a meeting to discuss what sort of pictures we were after and it was all straight-forward and easy. The images were one of the best investments we did!
Short trip to the Amalfi Cost the following week it was a nice and relaxing summer holiday!
The best part was that we asked many of our international guests to come in their national attire / traditional dress which made the crowd look so colourful and beautiful.
Advice For Other Couples
Talk about your ideas concerns and expectations early to each other in order to avoid mismatch of ideas later on. Start early if you are planning to get married in a big city like London many things can be booked out months in advance. Finally, go with what you feel is best don’t let other peoples views and expectation interfere with your planning process.
