You don’t often think of garden and city weddings together do you? This is one of the reasons I really loved today’s real wedding, a combination of chic city location and pretty English garden setting.
WWW readers Lora and Dario were married on the 16th July 2016 at Grays Court in York. The gardens were so perfect for their outdoor ceremony and couples portraits, it was just so idyllic. They had no theme, no traditions they worried about following and just wanted a really relaxed vibe throughout. One of the stand out elements to me has to be the fresh pretty pastel blooms, which looked so light and whimsical. Lora’s bouquet totally suited her bridal look, with her wearing bridal separates; think swishy skirt, lace top and a big bow. Amazing. Dario and his favourite gents donned navy suits, fun bow ties and tan shoes, they looked super stylish.
Stationery was a key detail the couple focussed on. They went digital for their for their invitations and hosted their own website with menu choices for guests. On the day they used pretty kraft paper stationery for the menus and wooden laser tags for the sweet favours. So lovely.
Thanks so much to Folega Photography for sharing these darling images with us.
THE PROPOSAL | 19.12.2014 – we went for an amazing meal at Man Behind the Curtain in Leeds. When we got home, Dario surprised me with the proposal, and a beautiful ring!
THE VISION | Our main aim was for the atmosphere to be really relaxed, and neither of us were too interested in following old traditions. We didn’t have a ‘theme’, and used Pinterest to gather ideas about décor and styling. For the venue, we wanted somewhere which was easily accessible and did great food.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | We had over a year to plan our wedding so it was a relatively relaxed process. After choosing our venue and visiting a few wedding fairs, we started to piece it together bit by bit. The fact that we weren’t following any particular tradition made it a lot easier – there was no big deal made about any individual element. Dario was keen to make the invitation and menu selection process digital, and made us a wedding website. This made it so much easier to keep track of everything!
THE VENUE | We wanted to get married in York because it means a lot to us – it’s the city we both grew up in, and where we met. When we looked around Grays Court we knew it would be perfect – it’s slightly quirky, does great food and has an amazing outdoor space overlooked by the city walls. Rhiannon is the Events Manager at Grays, and was super helpful both in the lead up to the wedding and on the day!
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I chose a 3 piece; a low back sweetheart bustier, a lace tee and an organza silk skirt. It was so comfortable and was exactly my style. My only real accessory was my shoes – which were nude glitter Esme Jimmy Choos. I fell in love with them as soon as I tried them on, and had to buy them!
FINDING THE DRESS | I found wedding dress shopping a bit of a nightmare – there were so many dresses which looked beautiful on the hanger, but just had too much material, were too heavy, or just didn’t seem to really be ‘me’. After visiting several shops, I booked an appointment at Jean Jackson Couture NQ in Manchester and didn’t look back. There were so many dresses I absolutely loved, and it took a few visits for me to make my final decision!
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Dario wore a two piece navy suit from Reiss, with a grey waistcoat. His favourite part of the outfit were his Church’s brogues, which he will wear time and time again. He left it until the week before the wedding to find a bow tie, and ended up buying 3! The one he ended up wearing was a surprise on the day.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | We didn’t want the ceremony to last too long and wanted the focus to be on our vows, so we didn’t have any readings. Our fabulous band, SuperFREAK, provided both a live lounge set before and after the ceremony, and in the evening.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My bridesmaids were my sister and one of my best friends, Alice. They did an absolutely amazing job of organising not one, but two hen parties for me, and were there by my side all day.
THE FLOWERS | My flowers were by Fiona Hogg who did an amazing job. I asked for a natural looking bouquet, with wild but delicate flowers.
THE CAKE | My cake and macaron favours were made by Dale Smith at French Critter. Neither of us like icing so we decided on a naked cake, which was beautifully decorated with fresh fruit, and flowers from the florist.
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographer was Sarah Folega, who we met at a friends’ wedding the year before. She was absolutely fantastic, and not only took gorgeous photos, but was also instrumental in making sure the timings of the day went to plan!
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Our good friend Bryan James designed a wedding logo for us, which shows the letters D and L tied together with a knot. This logo featured on our website, email invites and printed stationery on the day. I bought lots of vases and Kilner jars from The Range. I wanted them to be mismatched to fit in with the décor of the venue and the wild flowers. Our place cards doubled up as tags for the favours and were laser engraved onto chipboard, alongside our wedding logo. We designed and printed menus, ‘Wedding I Spys’ and sparkler tags on kraft brown card, which I then individually decorated with bakers twine.
THE HONEYMOON | We went to the Seychelles, where we visited two different islands. Words cannot describe how idyllic it was. We enjoyed an amazing two weeks of gorgeous landscapes, amazing food and relaxing spa treatments, and we even went on a fishing trip, on which, despite rough seas, we caught several Bonito!
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The moments before and after walking down the aisle were absolutely incredible – such a feeling of adrenalin and happiness, whilst being surrounded with the people you love the most! After the band had finished, our friend Jack played a few songs on the piano – everyone was singing along together and it was definitely one of the happiest moments of the day.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Relax, enjoy it, and don’t place too much emphasis on any individual part of the day – you’re only going to do it once, so don’t turn it into a chore!
