I really love discovering and featuring venues I’ve never seen before and today’s is a corker! Think woodland surroundings, tipis and an outdoor gazebo for ceremonies, all set in beautiful Devon. Sam and Liam booked Yurtcamp Devon for Saturday 20th May 2017 and had a truly wonderful day celebrating there. I mean what’s not going to be fun about festival vibes and a chilled atmosphere? The couple laid on entertaining garden games, live music and even a silent disco to ensure the party could go on into the early hours.
One of my fave elements from their day has to be the outfits. Sam’s tiered lace Cymbeline gown was just boho beautiful and I have serious fringe envy (tips please Sam!). Sam and the boys looked ruddy well awesome in tweed suits and a fun bow tie (for Liam) and dark ties, always a winner in my book. There were gorgeous blooms all over the place, including Sam’s lush and bountiful bouquet, which had a delightful colour palette.
Just wait until you see the barn with rustic furniture, crates of flowers and bunting. Oh and the humongous butter cream cake. Woah. Thanks so much to Memories and Milestones Photography for providing the amazing images.
THE PROPOSAL | Liam had met with Sam’s mum and dad during September 2015 and asked for their blessing to ask Sam to marry him, with the intention of asking the following New Year’s Eve. He also had to ask for Sam’s granny’s ring, which Liam knew Sam wanted as her engagement ring – but didn’t know which ring it was (and Sam’s mum and dad couldn’t remember either)! Liam couldn’t wait until New Year and booked a trip to Bath in October half term, 2015. Liam proposed to Sam at the edge of the weir in Bath, following an afternoon at the roof-top spa and a stay at the newly opened 5-star Gainsborough Bath Spa.
THE VISION | Beautiful but chilled, rustic, family-friendly with a festival-feel.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | Liam and Sam wanted to marry somewhere locally, and after searching online for venues visited Yurtcamp Devon in January 2016. It was seen on a cold, grey Saturday morning with bare branches on the trees and the barn empty – but could see how beautiful it would be and loved the idea that all of the guests could be in one place, and could stay overnight together too.
THE VENUE | Yurtcamp Devon, Gorse Blossom Farm, Newton Abbot, Devon.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | The dress was by Cymbeline UK. Shoes were by ammiejoyce on Etsy with gold bows from Charlotte Mills. Hair was decorated with gypsophila and nails were in pastel colours, representing the bridesmaids and maid of honour, groom’s suit and both mums. Make up was the bride’s own by Mac. Sam’s engagement ring was her maternal granny’s and her wedding ring was her paternal granny’s eternity ring.
FINDING THE DRESS | The dress was found at Browns of Totnes during a half-term shopping trip with Sam, her mum, her sister-in-law Emma and maid of honour, Emily. Sam at Browns of Totnes chooses one-off, bespoke pieces and THE ONE was found on the return visit the very next morning. Liam’s mum also knitted Sam an Aran jumper for the evening from a vintage 80s pattern.
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Tailor-made, bespoke vintage-inspired, blue-grey, tweed suit made by Martin’s, an ex-Saville Row tailor in Paignton, Devon. Braces from The Real McCoy, pale blue shirt from Next, brown, tweed bow tie (to match the best man’s) from eBay.
BEST MAN | Andy, Liam’s best man’s, suit was vintage, found in The Real McCoy, Exeter., with the same short and bow tie as the groom, and a waistcoat from Topman.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | Sam and her Dad, Keith, walked in to an acoustic version of ‘Diamonds’ by Jose Salvat. Emily, Maid of Honour read the picture book ‘A Lovely Love Story’ by Edward Monkton. During the signing of the register, ‘Emmylou’ by First Aid Kit was played and the happy couple left to ‘Hooked On A Feeling’ by Blue Swede.
Liam’s friend George, aka DJ Brando Walker, kick-started the evening followed by local, acoustic duo New Daze. The Fab Beatles then played a hits-filled set and the music went on into the early hours with a silent disco – with a playlist created by Sam, one by Liam and a party playlist – with glo-paint and glow-in-the-dark glasses.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Sam’s nieces Maddison (10) and Livvy (7) were in dresses from Very with accessories they had chosen themselves on their shopping trip(s) with Auntie Sam. The bridesmaids carried bouquets of Swizzels lollies, handmade by Sam. Emily’s dress, maid of honour, was vintage and her own.
THE BOYS | Liam’s dad Dave, Sam’s dad Keith and Sam’s brothers Steve and Mat were in high street mix-and-match outfits: navy chinos from Marks and Spencer, grey jackets from New Look, claret braces from New Look and navy wool ties from eBay. Jenson, the page boy, was in a matching outfit from Next and Occasion Wear for Kids.
THE FLOWERS | Bouquets for the bride and maid of honour, jam jar posies for the tables and a filled flower box for the top table and in the pagoda during the ceremony: hydrangeas, roses, scabious, nigella, viburnum and delphinium. Buttonholes mirrored the above, along with lavender, wheat and thistle in keeping with the rustic theme. Flowers by Holly at Hollyhocks Florist, based at Fermoy’s, Newton Abbot.
THE CAKE | Kindly made by Nigel and Paula Jones, Sam’s parents’ good friends and neighbours. Made by Nigel, three layers, one chocolate, one carrot cake and one lemon drizzle, beautifully decorated in rustic, pastel flowers by Paula. The cake topper featured a wooden silhouette of a bride and groom, with a cat on the foot of the veil (a nod to Sam and Liam’s cat Rocco).
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHERS | Jen Larkin and Mel Cornish from ‘Memories and Milestones Photography’, both friends and ex-colleagues of Sam (and Sam taught their boys at school)!
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Lots of bunting, fairy lights, candles and hanging decorations in the barn, tipi and outside the bar. The table decorations were vintage milk bottle holders, filled with light-up bottles, decorated jam jars, Love Heart favours, pastel-coloured pin wheels, rustic place settings and beautiful flowers in jam jars in keeping with Sam’s bouquet. The pagoda and barn were decorated with a giant willow heart, giant LOVE letters made by Liam’s dad, pom poms, hand picked signs, blackboards and photos of Liam and Sam from their younger years (prepared by respective parents). Liam’s dad also made games for the children, including giant jenga and limbo.
THE HONEYMOON | A mini-moon to Guernsey with other mini-moons and festivals planned for the summer and the coming months, including Boardmasters, Lockdown Festival, Rome, Paris and Amsterdam.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Liam wrote Sam a letter and left a present for her to open on the morning of the wedding. The bridesmaids and page boy loved Sam’s friends Emma and Simon’s beautiful VW camper van, which took them to the wedding in style. The wind took Sam’s veil as Liam and the guests got their first look at the bride. The only spot of rain was during the speeches while the guests were safely covered in the beautiful barn. Speeches were touching and funny. The page boy’s present couldn’t be found but thankfully a Kinder egg was swiftly passed to the top table in order to avert any tears. The first dance in the giant tipi was to Biffy Clyro’s version of Umbrella, which kicked straight into the dance floor filler ‘Yes Sir, I can Boogie’. For the evening, Sam got changed into gold-sequin, Converse hi-tops.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Plan the day that you want with the food, music and setting that you’ll enjoy. There’s lots of great ideas on Pinterest and Instagram when you’re starting the planning and lots of one-off ideas and bargains to be found on Etsy and eBay. Whenever you see something you like, see if you can find it cheaper or think whether you can make it yourself!
