For all you WWW readers who love to be beside the seaside, I must warn you that this wedding contains serious couple portrait goals!
Julie and Toby wed at Sussex Barn on the beautiful North Norfolk coast on the 6th April 2017. The venue was actually recommended to them on the day of the proposal and it turned out to be the perfect setting for their beautiful, relaxed day. The food sounds like it was an absolute highlight of the day and if it was all as good as the cake looks, I can imagine why!
Julie chose the gorgeous Scarlet by Suzanne Neville and it just suits the coastal setting perfectly. Toby and his best boys had a great time in London shopping for their suits and look just great in the Suit Supply numbers they finally settled on.
With a relatively short planning time of nine months it’s so important to get the right suppliers on board and it sounds like our pair absolutely nailed picking the perfect people to make their dream day happen.
We have Joshua Patrick to thank for these incredible images today. Enjoy!
THE PROPOSAL | Toby had told me that we were going up to North Norfolk for a birthday lunch for his grandma. The first bit of fishiness in all this was that we were driving up ourselves when we could have given some of his family a lift, but I didn’t want to be awkward so I let that go. Then the car park of the Victoria was empty when we got there which was a bit odd so I questioned whether we had the right place? Toby then had to admit that we were in fact just having a picnic on the beach ourselves and out came a beautiful old-fashioned hamper and a bottle of champagne! “Don’t think it, don’t think it” I thought to myself, just in case it’s not what I think this could be! So off we went down the little wooden path to Holkham beach and its beautiful vast expanses of sand, out to the dunes to set up camp, me hoping all the way that this was finally going to be it! It took what seemed like a lifetime for him to pick a spot, and set out the rug. Then came the magical moment when he took from inside the hamper, the box that every girl dreams of! He got up onto one knee (after having sat down on the picnic blanket) and proposed, and of course I said yes! The ring was far too big and there was a lot of sand around, so I was very nervous about flinging it off in ecstasy but so so happy that we were engaged! There wasn’t a soul around, just a big black cloud looming in the otherwise bright skies, so we ate up our picnic and frolicked the rest of the day away on the beach enjoying our special moment. Toby had secretly booked us in to “Bang in Wells”, a beautiful and funky place to stay in Wells Next the Sea, with such a romantic name that Toby felt appropriate! They looked after us brilliantly and in fact recommended a place for us to get married called Sussex Barn…
THE VISION | Elegant and classy but relaxed.
I’m not one for spending hours on my phone, so I bought a few magazines to read on the beach on holiday and embraced a bit of Pinterest when I could bear it, but the rest just came from us.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | We had nine months from proposal to wedding, so not much time in the wedding world!
THE VENUE | Sussex Barn, Norfolk.
First stop was the venue: in fact, after looking around a couple of other options, we were very much taken by Sussex Barn and just knew this was the right place for us. Emma Newling, the barn manager, was an absolute legend from start to finish and genuinely couldn’t have been more helpful if she’d tried!
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Suzanne Neville – Scarlet, Shoes – Debenhams. Earrings – drop pearls by Jenny Packham.
FINDING THE DRESS | Floating on my engagement high, the next stop in the planning was finding The Dress. After several attempts in Norwich whilst visiting family and friends, I finally settled on one in a place closer to home in The Bride in St Albans. Totally deserving of their Bridal retailer of the year award, the girls in there were professional, honest, friendly and I knew I could trust them to help me with the mega purchase.
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Meanwhile, Toby was trawling the streets of London with his two best men trying on suits and drinking beer in equal measure, finally deciding upon one from Suit Supply.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116, read by Audrey Belshaw (Toby’s grandma)
We had two of my friends from my string quartet days at school come and play violin and cello as people arrived. They played Jesu Joy as I walked up the aisle and the Queen of Sheba as we left together! This was so special as they are so dear to my heart. The awesome ska funk band later on was called Killamonjambo. Toby went to school with one of the band members so it was a nice reunion too!
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Laurelly, my lovely friend who was fabulous in keeping me calm and helping me organise everything. Her dress was from John Lewis and shoes from Monsoon.
THE FLOWERS | Tessa Papworth. I knew what kind of flowers I wanted and I sent pictures through to Tessa, who was recommended to us by Emma at Sussex Barn. She was so relaxed about it all I started getting worried! I really didn’t need to be though as she truly impressed and everything was top notch. I was so pleased with how it all came out. Our bouquets were delivered to our cottage and the flower arch and table decorations all delivered and put in place the day before. I couldn’t have dreamt of anything more elegant and beautiful.
THE CAKE | A naked Victoria sponge with berries. Made by Adam Baker our wonderful, wonderful chef.
THE FOOD | Truly deserves a massive mention and well done! Everyone we have spoken to has said it’s the best food they’ve ever had at a wedding and some ever! Adam Baker and Jack Forman cooked up an absolute storm, from canapés, to the wedding breakfast, to the cheese tower and we enjoyed every minute of devouring it! The tasting day we had for this will go down in history as one of he best days ever in our lives too!
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The wonderful Joshua Patrick. What can I say about this guy? I feel like I’ve known him for years! He has a comfortable way about him that instantly made us feel at ease and a portfolio to be very envious of if you’re in this world! He was top notch the whole day, floating in and out, seemingly effortlessly capturing all the action, and now we have a beautiful collection of pictures to remember this day forever. I can’t recommend him highly enough.
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Our wonderful brother in law designed all our stationery and posters for the big day, including the invitations, the seating plan, the order of service, the thank you cards, etc. He did a wonderful job with his fresh, cute, cool designs and we love him lots!
My hairdresser Flamingo Amy and makeup artist Amy Hargreaves both were kind enough to drive out from Norwich and I loved what they did. Great gals!
We got lots of other bits and bobs like tea lights, table stands easels etc. from Amazon and other places online. Too many to mention here!
ACCOMMODATION | We stayed at No 33 in Thornham on our wedding night, a boutique hotel with cottages opposite which the girls and I stayed at in the days leading up to the wedding. Beautiful accommodation tastefully decorated. Luxurious and classy and a real treat!
THE HONEYMOON | Cuba! 5 days in Havana followed by another 5 days in Varadero. Fabulous vintage cars, and fun times exploring the city followed by well-needed rest and relaxation at our 5 star resort with turquoise seas and all you can eat delicious food. Fabulous.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Walking up the aisle! So special with my friends playing for us. Beach time! Having photos on the beach was so fun with Josh. Speeches, dancing. The whole lot!!!
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Don’t go on your honeymoon the very next day. Leave at least one day in between for it all to sink it! You’ll be exhausted!
