The utterly beautiful Almonry Barn wedding of Hollie and Josh is sure to bring you all the wedding ideas today. They were hitched on the 13th July 2019 in the stunning Somerset countryside. Does it get any better than that? I think not…
Their day was the epitome of relaxed vibes, stylish scheme and effortless style. The barn was decorated so wonderfully in magical fairy lights, fresh florals, delicate table runners and twinkling candlelight. There were beautiful blue, grey and white hues throughout and they also featured in the totally gorgeous attire. A really fresh and pretty colour palette I think you will just adore. Do look out for a striking floral cake, fun photo booth backdrop and not one but two amazing wedding dresses.
Huge thanks goes to Kerry Bartlett Photography for sharing with us such sensational imagery.
Relaxed, calm, no fuss, effortless, magical, dream.
Hollie and Josh
We were on holiday in Rhodes, Greece, on the 13th July 2015. It was a very warm Monday afternoon, and Josh had planned for us to go for a meal at the A La Carte Restaurant at our hotel, overlooking the resort and the sea. I had a feeling something was going to happen, and when we got to the end of the meal and we were walking out of the restaurant, Josh asked if we should go for a walk. At this point, I was so full and wanted to go back to the room. But no! He insisted to go for a walk so he could show me where he had gone on holiday with his parents years ago. Whilst walking along the empty beach at sunset, Josh grabbed me and hugged me, during this I could feel one hand come off my back and slowly he let go and got down on one knee…. It was so romantic. If only we had a picture taken on that evening, it would have been good enough for a postcard!
We firstly looked at weddings abroad in areas such as Santorini, Greece and Tuscany, Italy (I love Italy!!). However, we wanted to be able to create our own wedding instead of having a package. We used Google to view Italian wedding barns one night, and I came across a barn which I fell in love with (after turning down many, many others!). After showing Josh and my mother I knew this was it!! It had all of the right information, a list of vendors etc. When asked where in Italy it was, I couldn’t answer, and after looking at the contact page I realised it was in SOMERSET! The vision was to be so effortless for our guests and ourselves on the day, really minimalist and fresh, pale blues, greys and whites with a slight touch of Italy, it was perfect!
The Readings & Music
We decided on having a harp during our ceremony and drinks reception. The sound was just so beautiful. Katie was so amazing and would bring a tear to your eye. As I am Irish and some of Josh’s family is Welsh, she included songs such as ‘Danny Boy’. It created the most relaxed and intimate atmosphere. During our evening party, we had a DJ (shout out to Bret!) who was also recommended by Almonry. Bret was fantastic and kept the party going with music that was relevant to us.
The Planning Process
After finding the barn, we found most of our vendors through Louise’s list. We loved the photographs on their website and Instagram, which is how we found our amazing photographer. Most of our research was done through Instagram (I didn’t want to invest in the vendors more if I didn’t like the look of their Insta!). After writing down the vendors we liked, I then stared to email them directly (disclaimer: we were planning our big day for over 2 years…). When it got close enough to meet the vendors personally, it all became real and they stared to give us ideas on what might look good for the barn and what our take on it would be. As Almonry Barn is stunning without any decorations, we didn’t want to overload it, and all of our vendors had worked there before and agreed to let it speak for itself. I made sure to keep a folder and book on everyone we had booked, including prices, meetings and invoice receipts, so that leading up to the wedding was as stress free as possible.
Suits from Next also, same as the Groom (five all together inc. Groom). We had two primary groomsmen, and both of our fathers wore the same suit but with extra blazers.
I had two bridesmaids, both my lovely cousins. I had been looking everywhere for either pale blue or cornflower blue maxi dresses. Finally, in Ireland whist surfing the web I found some in Hobbs. When one of my bridesmaids tried it on, she looked stunning, very summery, flowy and it complimented her in every way. Trying to get them was terrible as we had to order them from two different retailers!
End budget: £30,000
Almonry Barn; one of the most beautiful wedding venues we have ever seen. A soon as we walked into the grounds, we felt magic and calmness. We knew this was the place instantly.
Your Outfits & Accessories
Bride: My dress was from Hannah Elizabeth Bridal and the designer was Wtoo by Watters. I wore the Hathaway gown. I had been searching for the right dress that felt effortless and comfortable when I put it on, and I had been to four different boutiques and just couldn’t find what was on my mind. However, when we went to HEB I didn’t even choose this dress, it was handed to me just before we left, and as soon as I stepped out, my Mother (for the first time) gasped! I knew it was it. A couple of weeks before the wedding I also found a Phase Eight wedding dress that I had previously tried on in an outlet store, and decided to buy it for an evening dress as we were using my main dress the next week for a church blessing. My veil was from Lace and Favour (Barbados veil) and my shoes were the first wedding item I bought, and they were from Charlotte Mills.
Groom: Suit from Next (trousers and waistcoat, plus blazers for the older men!). We wanted to keep the suits theme close to Summer as possible, and also in line with the blue and grey from the venue. I didn’t want anything too restricting, so I decided on wearing just a waistcoat on top of a light blue shirt from M&S. The suits were grey with a fine blue check going through them. I wore this with brown brogues and a brown belt, plus a grey tie for the shirt. We wanted everyone to feel comfortable for summer and to look very fresh.
Hair: We found our hair stylist through Almonry and recommendations as our hair and beauty had worked together for other weddings. Louise was amazing and I had two sessions with her trying to figure out what I wanted. We decided on keeping my hair up as it is so thick with two braids wrapping around, and small white clay hydrangea flowers throughout. For my Bridesmaids, we kept it simple as their hair was short and twisted it back with a large white flower clipped in.
Beauty: Kelly was so amazing, I also had to sit down with her. We decided on very minimal make up, just to enhance natural features and once again looking very effortless.
Amber was the third vendor we booked. She knew exactly what we wanted and could give us all of the technical details we wanted. Amber went above and beyond for us, she even hand died ribbons to match what we wanted, designed our table and menu plan on two huge floor length mirrors, set our tables and dress the whole barn, and so much more. We couldn’t have done it without her and her expertise.
Kerry! Well Kerry made our day last longer than just a day. We watch our highlights film on a weekly basis and watch our full-length film as often as we can. We love reliving the experience! Without Kerry, we couldn’t relive the best day of our lives over and over again. Everything was done so perfectly and elegantly. Everyone has been asking for copies of photos, and sometimes even multiples, as they want to pass them on. We are so thankful to have invested in Kerry and her team, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to keep these memories so fresh in our minds.
The Details & Décor
Amber our florist dealt with most of the décor, from soft white and blue blooms in round low brimmed urns to the hand died blue muslin running the whole length of the head table. Each place setting had a single white blowsy rose tied in a hand died blue ribbon to finish the tables off. Hannah printed each table name, that was named after a city in Italy that we loved. On our invites, Hannah was able to use a drawing of Almonry she had done to header each one with pride. Outside we had games and photo hanging frame that was hand painted by Apple and Bramble. Their occasion props were a perfect fit to keep guests and children entertained throughout the day. We decided on having three different wedding favours; a Woodwick candle for the women, small Honey Jack Daniels for men (Josh’s favourite) and Leanne made some amazing heart cookie lollies for the children.
Leanne’s cakes are out of this world. Sitting down with her at her home completely changed what I thought I wanted and what would actually work for our vision and aesthetic. The flavours she had to offer were amazing, and so were her macarons! She told us when we were running a bit too wild in order to keep it to the rest of the wedding brief (we are so glad she did!).
We went to Sorrento, south of Italy for our Honeymoon. We went for a week in August (we wish it could have been longer!). It was one of the most amazing places we have been to. The food was amazing, the people were so friendly and overall, we felt so safe and welcome. It literally felt like home. We toured Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day which was very hot but worth it, and also got a boat ride over to Capri. This was the highlight of the trip. Amazing views, amazing shops, amazing food, and a tour around the island, at which one point we were allowed to jump into the sea and cool off!
The day before the wedding when everyone was arriving in Somerset, the feeling of calm before walking down the aisle, the peace of the day as everything was planned to a T. Our first dance, everyone was so happy and in good spirits. Also watching everything back now that it is over!
Advice For Other Couples
Plan everything… Make sure that you follow up with vendors and make sure they are recommended by your venue or have high reviews online. If they have worked for your venue before then they will know the plan of it, and what the rules and regs are. Just relax on the morning, you can’t change anything now. It is going to be the best day no matter what (you know everything has been taken care of by this point). It’s your day and don’t let anyone tell you how to run it or what to do!
