A Quirky + Fun Budget Wedding

iphone wedding

It’s F-F-Friday… and it’s time for the last wedding before the weekend :-)

Kate and Lee were married in August at Sandwell registry office followed by a reception at Vertu bar, Birmingham. Kate said they planned their day around her 1950s inspired Vivien of Holloway dress, which they wanted to be fun and quirky.

They kept their wedding within a £3500 budget by keeping things simple. I so love the button bouquets, the sweet polka dot bridesmaid dresses and those sweets… nom!!

Thanks so much to The Fotography Factory for sharing their images with us today.

Names…. Kate and Lee

Wedding Date…. 19th August 2012

The Proposal…. We got engaged in Sept 2009, and Lee took me shopping to Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter to pick out an engagement ring.

The Vision for the day…. We wanted a fun relaxed day with good friends and family……..but with lots of quirky details to make the day uniquely ours.  We own and run our own photography business  (LKPhotography) so we have had our fill of ‘bog standard weddings’ with white chair covers + coloured bows, and we also knew a big stately home wasn’t for us………..saying that, we still wanted our day to be special !

The Planning process….  The theme for the wedding was planned around my 1950’s style Vivienne of Holloway dress.  We started planning & booking our wedding in Feb 2012 – so not long …but I’d be far too impatient to plan for a year !

Budget…. We tried to keep costs down as we knew we could have a great day without spending a fortune.  We spent around £3500.

The Venue… We chose The Sandwell Suite at Sandwell registry office for the ceremony as it has lovely grounds and is a gorgeous Georgian building. The rooms had also just had a beautiful refurbishment. ( not bad find for a registry office). We searched for ages to find a reception venue, but finally happened upon Vertu bar – back in The Jewellery Quarter (where my engagement ring was from)  It was a great laid back, cool bar with fab décor, and a great manager, Rich who helped us plan exactly what we wanted.

Finding the dress…. I already knew I wanted a 50’s style tea dress, The one I ordered from Vivienne of Holloway was the first one I tried, and I loved it from the moment I put it on. I teamed it with red Vivienne Westwood heels to complete the outfit. My sister made my birdcage veil. My make up and hair was done by the vintage hair salon.

Groom’s attire… Lee already had his suit, and in true bloke style didn’t see a need to buy another one.  So as Lee’s suit was navy, and my shoes red, we found our colour scheme…red, white and blue. We added a funky shirt, a trilby hat and some converse trainers to Lee’s suit to complete his outfit.

The Readings + Music…. My best friend Jo did our reading ‘ The art of a good marriage’. For the ceremony, we had In the moog by Glenn Miller for the guests seating.  I came down the aisle to She, by Elvis Costello, to sign the register we had  Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars.  We left the ceremony to This Thing Called Love by Queen. At the reception I booked a great Irish singer as a surprise for Lee, called Rich McMahon.  We heard him play a few summers back, and Lee had loved the old Irish songs he played, as they reminded him of listening to them with Dad as a kid. After that, our DJ’s played into the night with a mix of 90’s indie, soul & mowtown, etc.

Beautiful bridesmaids….. Our bridesmaids were Lee’s 4 daughters, Amy, Hannah, Lauren, and Lucy.  They wore polka dot 50’s dresses with red converse.

The Flowers… A button bouquet made by my mum, including buttons from my mums, my nans, and my great grandmothers button tins !

The Cake… Cup cakes made by my mum, and 2 friends…. Lemon, red velvet, chocolate mmmmmm.

Your Photographer…. We gave fellow wedding photographer Rob Farrell from The Fotography Factory the tough gig of photographing a photographers wedding………he did an AMAZING job !

The Details + Decor…. We  did a retro sweet buffet instead of favours….which went down a storm, and looked pretty cool too.

The Honeymoon…. We had a minimoon in Brightonfor a few days.  We are planning a properhoneymoon in November, probably Cuba.

Memorable moments… Seeing a tear in Lee’s eye, when I introduced our singer.  He great party atmosphere at the reception, and spending it with all our friends and family

Advice for other couples… Don’t worry about following the traditional wedding must haves… book stuff that makes the day yours.
