Whimsical Greenery Nature Wedding

There really is nothing more magical than a wedding in the woods, lit with lanterns and filled to the brim with greenery is there? This gorgeous and can I just say, utterly stylish pair, decided to do just that and hosted a nature inspired celebration in Devon.

Carole and Craig were hitched on the 24th August 2016 at Ever After – A Dartmoor Wedding, the setting was so perfect for their laid back and bohemian vibes wedding party. Informal and intimate were their buzz words and they included many personal touches. With a love of reading, writing and music they share as a couple (real all in their proposal story), the readings and music choices were really important to them especially in their ceremony.

Greens and whites were used in the décor, with foliage used throughout to great affect and calligraphy style stationery bringing all of the elements together. Carole and the girls created the bouquets and buttonholes the day before and they looked marvellous. I have to say I really love the wooden touches in the signage and the beautiful lighting, which transformed the venue in the evening. I am always a lover of Grace Loves Lace‘s gowns and Carole’s choice of Valentina was pure perfection. Swoon.

Luna Weddings, thank you so much for sharing these divine images with us.

THE PROPOSAL | To give a bit of background, I am an avid reader while Craig loves to write! So on my birthday, Craig presented me a hardback book, written by himself. At that point Craig was based in Scotland so we were having to do the ‘long distance thing’. Every time we had some time together, he would read me a couple more chapters of the ‘fairytale’ he had written. The book came to it’s culmination while we were enjoying a weekend together in Prague and ended with the Prince asking for the Princess to be his wife…of course, she said yes!

THE VISION | From the start we knew we wanted our day to be very intimate, informal and involving nature in some way. After coming across Ever After, in Devon, which is set in the most beautiful woodland, we knew we wanted this whimsical, green, woodland theme to run throughout the day.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | I must say, I think I was a very laid back bride! Once we had the main elements nailed down, I spent the year and half before the big day working on all of the little details which I was determined I would do myself. After reading many blogs on ways to ‘cut costs’ which warned of how much worked this would be, I made sure I set aside plenty of time to get things done at a leisurely pace. I also enlisted the help of my wedding party who were more than happy to pitch in whenever the stress crept in! Delegating was key.

BUDGET | We were not very organised with the budget, which I now wish we had been! I estimate it was around £21k.

THE VENUE | As soon as we came across Ever After, just outside of Tavistock, we knew this was the one! We were so certain that we booked it even before visiting. As soon as we got a chance to head across from London to check it out, our initial thoughts were confirmed, it was even more beautiful in real life. It’s the perfect spot for an intimate wedding surrounded by woodland, a quaint little river and pristinely kept gardens. Nicola, the owner, was also amazing in helping two people who really had no clue where to begin planning a wedding! Along with her husband, they have thought of everything to make your day individual and full of quirky details. I found the process a lot more personal than when we had looked at bigger venues and am so glad we chose here!

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress – The Valentina from ‘Grace Loves Lace’. Shoes – Carvela. Earrings & Necklace – both from Kate Spade.

FINDING THE DRESS | My biggest concern when finding a wedding dress was making sure I could dance the night away comfortably! After visiting a few wedding dress boutiques I felt slightly disheartened as nothing I tried on was remotely ‘me’. I then came across ‘Grace Loves Lace’, an Australian brand known for informal, bohemian dresses at a great price point. Normally you have to order online and hope for the best but they happened to have a pop up shop in London, which I was lucky enough to secure an appointment for. There I found multiple ‘ones’! I settled on the Valentina because of the gorgeous lace overlay, daring back and flowing chiffon skirt. I now plan on shortening the length to a midi length so I can wear again

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Craig’s outfit was a lot harder to find than mine. Being Scottish, it was assumed he would don a kilt but having worn one to every formal occasion since he was 18, he decided to go against the norm!

Waistcoat – Ted Baker. Shirt – Zara. Trousers – River Island. Shoes – Paul Smith.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We settled on one reading during the ceremony, read by my bridesmaid, Becca – a poem Craig penned for me for our first Christmas together, titled ‘Love’.

During the signing of the register, my brother, nephew and Mum performed ‘Thousand Years’ by Christina Perri.

Reception – rather than hire a band, we decided to create the ultimate party playlist. Craig spent 3 months collating our favourite tunes and mixing them. It went down brilliantly and the dance floor was never empty!

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My sister was my Maid of Honour along with my two close friends as bridesmaids whom I met while studying my Dance degree. They were all amazing at supporting me whenever I needed and couldn’t have done it without them! They all wore nude dresses from Asos with back detail to reflect my dress. Shoes and accessories I left up to them!

THE FLOWERS | This was an area where I felt I could create a few elements myself. As the venue already had an abundance of foliage, I didn’t need to add much else. I worked with Deborah at Dartmoor Flowers, to create an arch of green foliage for the ceremony barn. She then also created garlands of foliage for the table centrepieces, interspersed with spray roses and gypsophila and hair pieces for the bridal party. I took charge of the bouquets and buttonholes by visiting a local wholesalers the day before the wedding and picking up different types of greenery and roses. As it was such an informal day, I loosely arranged these and tied with twine. Easy! It was a great activity to do the day before with the bridesmaids and mothers over a few glasses of prosecco.

THE CAKE | Provided by Divine Wedding Cakes. Raspberry and chocolate sponge, covered with a buttercream icing. Dartmoor flowers also provided a few sprigs to decorate this with.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Luna Weddings. The choice of a photographer was made really easy after looking through the portfolio of Anna and Mike! They seemed to always capture the most surprising, emotional moments along with the most beautiful use of lighting. They made us feel at total ease throughout the day and ended up feeling like two of the guests rather than the photographers! The finished photos were more than we could have hope for and my parents house is now adorned with endless photographs from the big day.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Most of the small details were DIY from the table numbers to favours. A big focus of the day was music so the guests each received a ‘soundtrack of the day’ which included tracks used at special points throughout the day.

THE HONEYMOON | Rather than a wedding gift list, we requested that anyone wishing to provide a gift, donated money to be used on activities throughout our honeymoon. This was done through www.honeyfund.com where you can set the gift options to provide a variety of price points and activities to create your dream trip. Ours was three weeks travelling around Bali and the surrounding islands – including scuba diving with turtles, relaxing on pristine white beaches and a sunrise hike up volcano!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | A Scottish wedding would not be complete without the finale song of ‘Loch Lomond’ by Runrig. Every guest hits the dancefloor, circling the bride and groom while loudly singing about our ‘bonnie’ homeland. This culminated with myself and my new husband being thrown in the air by the bridal party – an unforgettable end to a brilliant day!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | This day is to celebrate YOUR love, no one else’s, so keep reminding yourself of this when the stresses of pleasing other people gets too much!
