Travel Aircraft Museum Wedding on Concorde

You can’t get a more authentic travel themed wedding than one set at a motor and aircraft museum can you really? This fun loving bride and groom went all out and even tied the knot aboard Concorde.

Debbie and John were wed on the 6th May 2017 at Brooklands Museum in Surrey. The setting was perfect for the jet setting pair and they really had a lot of fun with their chosen theme. After holding their ceremony on the aeroplane they then had a delightful handfasting ceremony beneath the aircraft wings, such a memorable and personal touch.  The décor was of course tied into the aviation style, with a divine suitcase and globe cake, which looked so realistic it’ll really wow you. Then there were the paper aeroplanes, map seating plan, globe centrepieces and ticket stationery. Brilliant.

Debbie decided upon a silk flower bouquet as an alternative to fresh flowers and what a gorgeous creation it was. Rose, succulents and cotton wool balls all tied up with hessian. It went perfectly with her short lace frock and strappy heels. John meanwhile opted for a navy suit and tweed grey waistcoat for a modern and special look.

Nikki van der Molen, thank you so much for providing these incredible shots with us today.

THE PROPOSAL | Under the stars on the porch of our apartment in Rarotonga (Cook Islands).

THE VISION | We wanted a fun and relaxed wedding, which reflected our love of travelling.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We found the planning quite overwhelming with so much choice! Often there was very little difference in perceived quality and price for various suppliers. There was rarely a supplier who had poor reviews either so the options seemed endless.

BUDGET | £15,000

THE VENUE | The venue was the first choice we made as we expected everything to fall into place once we knew where it was all happening. We visited several more conventional venues in lovely surroundings but we soon decided that we wanted something a little bit different and more fun. We both thought it would be a great idea to get married on an aircraft but didn’t actually think we would make it happen. That is how we found Brooklands Museum and not only did they have an aircraft you can get married on, they had the most iconic aircraft of all – Concorde! Besides the aircraft we also loved the vintage feel of the museum and the fact it was dedicated not only to aviation but also to motorsport, which we both enjoy watching. The venue was fabulous and the day went just as we wanted. The venue provided museum entry for all guests during the day which we felt helped tick away that time between the ceremony and meal and also provided lots of interesting opportunities for photos.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I loved my dress! The soft delicate lace on the bottom contrasted with the more modern stripes on the bodice and the little bow at the waist. I also loved that the dress had incorporated shoulders as I find strapless bras very uncomfortable and this made me feel much more secure. The length was also just what I wanted, just below mid calf, which meant I could show off my blue shoes (which changed into sparkly blue trainers for the evening!) and dance the night away much more easily.

After one very disappointing hair and make up trial I contacted Amanda White who put me into contact with one of her make up artists, the lovely Storme. Storme really understood my vision of how I wanted my make up, fairly neutral but with a more dramatic eye and was really friendly and easy to get on with I knew I would be comfortable with her on the day so I booked her up straight away after my trial.

FINDING THE DRESS | I knew from early on that I wanted a short dress, I am far too clumsy for a full length dress! I had tried on a dress at the National Wedding fair which was absolutely gorgeous but the price was so far above budget I left there empty handed and disappointed. However when I went to Marianne Jessica in Bromley I was incredible happy that they had a lovely selection of short dresses and I tried on four all by Rita Mae. All of them were great but I loved the mix of modern and retro that my dress provided and that it wasn’t too over the top and suited my figure.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | I wanted to keep it simple – no hats or tails for me – but I also didn’t want to look like I was off to a business meeting once the ceremony was over! I knew I wanted a blue/grey combination which was something a little different for me and fitted in well with the loose colour theme we had in mind initially. There were some great options on the high street so I didn’t need to look any further. In the end I chose a denim coloured two-piece suit from Marks & Spencer and found a snazzy looking Donegal tweed grey waistcoat, which also added a vintage touch to the outfit which fit in well with the venue.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We did not have any readings during our ceremony, it was not something which we felt was important to us. I walked down the aisle to Ellie Goulding’s How Long Will I Love You (my original choice of the Back to the Future theme tune was somewhat vetoed by John for being a tad on the dramatic side).

We also incorporated a handfasting ceremony into our day, this was held after the legal ceremony on the Concorde and the handfasting took place underneath the wings of the aircraft. As the handfasting was a much more personal ceremony to us we had John’s dad read the ceremony and the maid of honour and best man tie the cords. We also invited all of our guests to add their own bindings and this has left us with a wonderful variety of cords, threads, ribbons and even a neck tie, all bound together for us to frame as a lovely memory of our day and the friends and family we shared it with.

Our first dance was to Michael Jackson’s I just can’t stop loving you. It took us a long time to decide on a song for our first dance as we didn’t want to build up false expectations from our guests that they were about to see something in anyway choreographed or accomplished in terms of dancing skills.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had one bridesmaid/maid of honour who has been my best friend since secondary school. She provided great support in the lead up to the wedding and on the day. She wore a lovely grey dress from Dorothy Perkins.

THE FLOWERS | I decided quite early on that I wanted silk flowers. I saw a picture on pinterest of a bouquet, which I loved and saw that it was from a supplier of silk flowers. This had an added bonus for me as I can suffer from allergies and no one wants to be snotty on their wedding day! Plus, the silk flowers meant that they would last forever and I could have them on display. I sent Silk Blooms Ltd a picture of the bouquet from pinterest and they did an amazing job recreating it for me and a smaller version for my maid of honour. I also got my hair vine from the same supplier, swapping the white flowers for dark blue and, again, they did a fantastic job and I felt they were really good value for money.

We also purchased buttonholes and a hair comb with real flowers from I Do Wedding Florists and these were just lovely, especially the hair comb, which my maid of honour was very happy with.

THE CAKE | I knew from the get go that I did not want what would be considered a standard wedding cake. Having been banned from making our cake by John (which I am glad he did) we found our cake maker at a wedding fair at Brooklands Museum itself. Erica of Iced Innovations really listened to us and gave us exactly what we wanted in our cake. We based it on a cake we saw on Pinterest but then adapted it with our own ideas. She also sent us a picture the day before to check we were happy and was very flexible in making one change that made the cake absolutely perfect for us. It was also delicious (which was a good job as we were eating it for several days later!). Again the cake incorporated the travel theme with a vintage look. The second tier was such a realistic suitcase that we were asked by the Brooklands staff if it was cake or an actual case! We made one tier very personal to us by having the coordinates of locations that are special to us written on the tier.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | This one was a tougher choice than we thought it would be! We were a little caught out by how early people book their suppliers and we had a few false starts with photographers we were interested in not being available on our day. That definitely worked to our advantage though as we found Nikki van der Molen and she was lovely and the photos we got at the end were great. Nikki really managed to capture the day in her photos and was so unobtrusive that we wondered how she had managed to move around so much without us noticing! She was also lovely to chat to and very friendly and also did a fabulous engagement shoot for us in Crystal Palace Park, which definitely helped get us comfortable for the day.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | The majority of our decorations we made ourselves. We made both bunting from maps and multi-coloured paper airplanes to provide ceiling decorations. Our table names were airport codes for places that were special to us or that we enjoyed visiting and we hand painted MDF letters to represent the flags of the country that the airport was in. We also had old fashioned globes on top of travel books (again relevant to the city/country the table name represented) within our centre pieces. I also made the favours for the tables, which were iced biscuits which looked like champagne bottles, glasses, cork and bubbles. We also had aircraft-shaped confetti scattered over all the tables which were cut from maps (we purchased these from eBay as neither of us had the patience to sit and punch out hundreds if aircraft!)

THE HONEYMOON | As we have had some lovely holidays already we wanted to do something completely different for our honeymoon so we decided to take an Alaskan cruise followed by some time in Denali National Park in Alaska followed by Banff and Jasper National Parks in the Canadian Rockies. For our wedding gift list we had a honeymoon fund where we listed activities we planned to do whilst on honeymoon so that our guests could put money towards specific items rather than just giving us money.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Our handfasting! It is something which I knew I wanted to incorporate into our wedding and as there are no hard and fast rules we could make it completely personal to us. It also provided one of the funniest moments of the wedding where John’s dad had to blow John’s nose for him as we were already tied together and halfway through the ceremony when his nose started to run!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Consider silk flowers for bouquets – they can be reasonably priced and provide a keepsake. It also allows for more unusual arrangements. Also don’t underestimate how soon other couples make their arrangements. If you have a particular supplier in mind, grab them while you can but remember there are plenty more out there.
