Stylish & Rustic Sun Drenched Homemade Barn Wedding

The lighting in today’s wedding is just divine, from the sun drenched portraits to the candles and fairy lights in the evening.

Clare and Rob were married on the 8th June 2014 at Gate Street Barn in Surrey. Fluffy blooms made up the beautiful bouquets, there was a super scrumptious looking cake plus a genius biscuit bar.

There was an abundance of style, with Clare wearing a stunning Johanna Hehir dress with flowers in her hair, the bridesmaids donned pale grey and Rob had a custom made suit by A Suit That Fits. Oh my.

Thanks so very much to Lola Rose Photography for providing the gorgeous imagery.

THE PROPOSAL | Rob proposed on holiday in Rome. We where sitting in a tiny piazza eating ice cream.

THE VISION | Our initial vision for the day was to create a fun and relaxed wedding day that our guests would hopefully enjoy as much as we hoped we would. We knew we wanted to design and make the stationery and other elements to be used in the big day. We also knew early on we wanted a barn as the venue as this would allow us to be creative and form the basis of our informal, relaxed, fun day.

THE PLANNING PROCESS |  We planned our wedding over 18 months. We started the planning by choosing our top two priorities, for me it was the venue and Rob the food. We then decided that as we had 18 months to plan that we would focus our attention to roughly one supplier a month, which allowed us to research each element carefully and be confident we had made the right choices.

THE VENUE | We saw lots of barns. Gate Street Barn was the first venue we saw and by far the best! We loved Gate Street Barn for its wooden beams, outside grassy areas, field of cows (the cows proved to be very entertaining for the young children at our wedding) and how it was set out of the way down country lanes, which made it feel really private. It was the perfect venue for our fun, relaxed and homemade wedding.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES |  My dress was by Johanna Hehir, and looked vintage in style with lots of lovely lace. I had simple and small earrings, which I found in Accessorize. And I wore flowers in my hair, which matched the flowers in my bouquet.

FINDING THE DRESS |  I found finding the dress quite hard. I did not have a set idea of what I wanted and I found it hard to choose something which I knew I would still want to wear in 10 months time. I ended up going to a lot of boutiques across London and trying on range of different style dresses. I choose my Johanna Hehir dress as it felt elegant and beautiful, and I loved the lace!

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Rob got a custom made suit from A Suit That Fits in London. He chose a navy blue fabric to be used for the suit jacket, waistcoat and trousers, which he then paired with brown brogues. Rob, the ushers, father of the bride and father of the groom all wore the same matching red and white polka dot ties and bright red socks! The ushers wore navy suits that were bought from Next.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We decided we wanted our music to match the informal feel we wanted for the wedding, and be a relaxed, happy and fun mix. Our pre ceremony music included L.O.V.E by Nat King Cole, I walked down the aisle to the Feather theme from Forest Gump and to sign the registrar we had an instrumental version of Elton John’s Your Song. To walk back down the aisle we had How Sweet It is to be Loved by You by Marvin Gaye. We really wanted this song to be fun, and get everyone in a happy and excited mood for the rest of the day.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My four bridesmaids wore pale grey dresses by No.1 Jenny Packham at Debenhams. They were the perfect match for my dress, having a vintage feel with their lace tops and nice, floaty skirts for the warm day. The bridesmaids had their hair half up and half down with white gypsophila.

THE FLOWERS |  I knew I wanted the flowers to look really natural, like they had been gathered up from the surroundings, and for the colours be a mixture of light pastel shades so they looked pretty and beautiful without being formal. I also knew I wanted to use jars for the flowers on the tables, and together with our families and friends we spent ages collecting and washing loads of jam jars in the build up to the wedding! We then decorated the jars with lace, brown string and white ribbon, and clustered them together on green and white coloured doilies down the centre of the long banquet tables. We felt their homemade and rustic feel complemented the barn and the vision we had.

THE CAKE | Rob’s auntie made the cake. It was perfect and tasted amazing! Again, to match the informal and relaxed feel for the day we decided to have a naked cake. It was three layers of sponge, filled with flavored buttercream and decorated with fruit and mint leaves.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER |  We knew choosing the photographer was a massive decision. We loved Kelly Green at Lola Rose the moment we saw her photos. She takes stunning, really natural and relaxed photos. Everyone in her photographs looked like they here having so much fun, which was exactly what we wanted! Kelly worked so hard on the day, was so energetic and so enthusiastic.

THE DETAIL & DÉCOR |  We had white broderie anglais fabric bunting, which hung across the main barn. We then decorated the smaller Phesantry barn with old photographs of our parents and grandparents. This allowed us to include important people in our lives who could not be there. We also had a biscuit bar in this smaller barn too; large jars filled with custard creams, bourbons and NICE biscuits, so people could snack between meals and during the evening party. We also accessorised the Phesantry with white painted letters R, & and C and provided red stripy straws for the drinks.

THE HONEYMOON | Singapore and Bali. We wanted a mix of sightseeing in Singapore, and exploring and relaxing in Bali.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Getting ready with my bridesmaids in the morning, it was really lovely quality time we had together, chatting and talking. Dancing in the evening with our guests, it was so great to see our guests having fun and enjoying themselves. The last dance of the evening, our guests danced in circle around Rob and I, and it was lovely!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES |  Enjoy the day, it really does go so quickly!
