Ricky and Lynsey absolutely went their own way and created the most wonderfully intimate celebration that was just so them. They wed at Lower Barns in Cornwall on the 9th September with a full weekend of festivities and doesn’t it look oh so joyful and colourful? Our pair had the run of the whole venue for the weekend and it looks like they had a riot!
Lynsey knew exactly what she wanted in her dress and her long sleeved Rue de Seine gown fitted the bill perfectly. She teamed it with the most fantastic bespoke leather jacket, I’m a fan! Ricky wasn’t quite so decisive about his and the groomsmen’s suits but they got there in the end, selecting three pieces from Next with a rather dapper result.
Not much décor was needed, with the venue itself providing such a fabulous colourful background but the flowers including Lynsey’s favourite sunflowers pull everything together just delightfully. Lynsey and Ricky wed in a beautiful outdoor ceremony and followed this with an intimate dinner and dancing. They really kept the whole planning process as fuss-free as possible and Lynsey has some fantastic advice for couples getting stressed out with the planning.
Alexa Poppe has captured the love and colour of this fabulous celebration just wonderfully. Thank you so much for sharing these gorgeous images with us today.
THE PROPOSAL | Ricky got down on one knee in one of our favourite places – up Binevenagh mountain. We used to go there all the time when we first met each other, it has the most amazing views.
THE VISION | We wanted a really relaxed and fun day. Other than that we didn’t start planning with a specific vision, we just picked elements as we went along and hoped for the best.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | The biggest and hardest decision we made was to have a small and intimate wedding. We talked about a bigger wedding at home and eloping but decided to meet in the middle and invite 17 guests for a weekend wedding. As we are from Northern Ireland and we got married in Cornwall it meant planning everything via phone and email. It would have been easy to get stressed out about things like not seeing the venue, having cake tastings or make up trials etc. But we just relied on reviews of all our suppliers and how we felt after speaking to them. It’s much easier these days to plan a wedding like this as most suppliers have all their work on social media. We also had Skype calls with our humanist celebrant Jo so we could all get to know each other before the wedding. This made us more at ease on the day as we felt we had already met her, which would not have been the case had we gone for a civil ceremony.
THE VENUE | There are no words to describe Lower Barns. It’s so magical. All of our guests say the same thing. It is a Boutique B&B which sleeps up to 20 people. We rented out the entire venue for the weekend. The rooms are quirky but luxurious and every time you turn your head there is something else colourful to admire. The owners, Janie and Mike, are so helpful and welcoming. The food was superb! The night before we had Cornish pasties and cake. Before the wedding a cream tea, and then for our meal we had a BBQ.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress is ‘Chloe’ by Rue de Seine which I found at The White Gallery in Newry.
I also had a hand painted leather jacket from Back Chat Designs.
And my shoes were Senso.
I also surprised Ricky with a Sheffield United garter!
FINDING THE DRESS | Finding my dress was probably the easiest part. I said from the start I want long sleeves, lace and a train. Nothing sparkly or with a big skirt. I took my mum and future mother in law with me, I put on the first dress and we all said “yes this is it”. Rachel at The White Gallery was brilliant, she was able to pick out what I wanted straight away!
GROOM’S ATTIRE | This was the hardest part. Ricky and the groomsmen eventually got suits from Next. I didn’t know men could be so picky, we must have looked at a 100 navy suits which all looked the same.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | We didn’t have music during our ceremony as we ended up getting married outside and it really wasn’t needed. After we had a band called Swingology play for a few hours before putting on our playlist. We asked all our guests to pick three songs they loved and it made quite the eclectic mix. Everything from Meatloaf to Iron Maiden to Stevie Wonder and then Justin Bieber. Our first dance was “Heartbeats” by Jose Gonzalez – this took a long time to choose as Ricky mostly likes heavy metal music. But we both loved this song, plus it was nice and short as we are both terrible dancers.
Our first reading was “She’s not perfect” by Bob Marley. And the next was a funny one by Sandol Stoddard “I Like You”.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My four bridesmaids were my oldest friends. I decided to dress them in white as Lower Barns is so colourful and so were my flowers. My maid of honour wore a jumpsuit and the other girls all wore different dresses to suit each of them. They are all from Asos along with their gold accessories. They all had their hair curled and part of it in a fishtail plait. I have to say they all looked beautiful!
They also made an amazing speech with photo props which was hilarious!
THE FLOWERS | My favourite flower is a sunflower so I definitely wanted these in my bouquet – the flowers on my dress were also sunflowers. Then the blue was picked to match the cake and orange to match the boys ties. They were so colourful and matched in with Lower Barns perfectly. Our florist Anna works with brides at Lower Barns a lot and she just knew what looks good there. And of course I had always wanted an excuse to wear a flower crown!
THE CAKE | Cake – one of my favourite things! Suzi Humphries cake design was who we chose based on their brilliant reviews. The bottom layer was lemon with raspberry conserve and the top was red velvet with white chocolate buttercream. Both were delicious! We had a blue watercolour effect and a gold top. I couldn’t resist stuffing a bit into Ricky’s face!
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | We picked Alexa Poppe as she focuses on natural, reportage style photos. Ricky hates posing for photos so we didn’t want to have to stand with forced smiles taking millions of the same photo. Alexa made us feel so at ease and we are so delighted with our photos, they really show the joy and laughter of the day. Every time I look at them it makes me want to re do it all again.
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We didn’t do anything in the way of décor, Lower Barns is colourful enough. We made hangover kits for all our guests and we had a caricaturist come on the day to draw all of our guests which was so much fun.
THE HONEYMOON | We went to Mykonos the day after we came back from Cornwall. Such an amazing island, we travelled by quad all week, ate too many gyros and drank too much wine. We then flew to London for the weekend before coming home where we finished our honeymoon off at a festival – Hospitality in the Park.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Waking up with the worst hangover on the wedding morning had me and Ricky raiding our guests’ hangover kits!
Playing Mr and Mrs at the end of the night.
The speeches were epic! My bridesmaids, the groomsmen and ricky all did one. Ricky’s speech actually had two of the boys in tears, which they will never live down!
Tying the knot – we did a fisherman’s love knot during our ceremony which was so lovely as two of our friends read the reading while our hands were joined through the rope.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Don’t sweat the small stuff, on the run up to the wedding it all seems so important. On the day nothing matters but you two.
Don’t worry about other people and what they think. Do your wedding your way!
Don’t worry about traditions; my mum gave me away, my bridesmaids gave a speech, me and Ricky stayed together the night before and my bridesmaids wore white…none of these things gave us bad luck!
