Seaside Country Farm Pale Blue Marquee Wedding

I have had the pleasure of visiting the quaint seaside town of Rye, and I can see why today’s couple chose it as a base for their wedding celebrations. The best of both worlds, country and seaside with so much charm and character.

WWW readers Lucy and Simon were hitched on the 27th August 2016 at Rye Town Hall followed by a reception at a pretty hop farm. Their ceremony was followed by a walk through the streets of Rye complete with Rex the Town Crier, it must have been such a special moment. They then headed to the farm and their perfectly rustic and pretty pole tent marquee filled with home-grown flowers and personal touches. Food, drink and dancing were the top priorities but everything looked so lovely too.

Lucy wore a romantic off the shoulder gown with a gorgeous vintage hair do and a fresh bouquet of blooms. Simon, a fashion designer, had his dashing suit custom made, it looked cracking. There were maids in blue Vera Wang frocks with flower crowns and cute pups everywhere. Amazing.

Thanks so much to Love and Adventures for sharing these idyllic images.

THE PROPOSAL | At the atmospheric, artist retreat, shingle beach of Dungeness. With the power station looming behind and a porpoise popping up on the beach to congratulate us. Followed by celebrating at the Globe Inn in Rye.

THE VISION | Simon gave the brief: “somewhere no one else has got married with a good view.” We both knew we wanted to get married near to where Simon proposed as we’ve had a lot of fun weekends away in East Sussex/Kent and is near the sea which we both love.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We started planning the same weekend as we got engaged. We spent a lovely weekend driving around trying to find the perfect location only to end up choosing the neighbouring farm to where we were staying. After the venue was sorted we quickly sorted out the big things. I work in events so had a lot of spread sheets and schedules which freaked out both Simon and the in-laws! We make a good team as Simon is a fashion designer so added the creative flair whilst I got on with the logistics.

THE VENUE | We were so, so lucky to find the perfect wedding reception venue. We both knew we wanted to find somewhere a bit unusual. After driving around the South East we just mentioned to the owners of the cottage we were staying in when we got engaged if they knew of anyone locally who might be willing to lend us some land. It just so happened that their close friends and neighbours had just had their son’s wedding and were considering letting out the land for events. We couldn’t believe it when we went to see the place. It is a beautifully fully restored Hop Farm with views over the rolling countryside and stunning brown and white goats running around. The couple who live there and Mike who worked on the farm were the most amazing people we could  have ever wished to meet and over the year of planning we got to know them well. However I think they were definitely sick of the sight of us by the end!

We brought in everything from the marquee, generators to the toilets and bars. We were so lucky to have the space for a whole week to start setting up and where fully supported by the owners as well as our families.

As we couldn’t get officially married at the farm we took our vows at the atmospheric Rye Town Hall with the wonderful Rex the Town Crier leading us through the streets to our car and vintage bus that whisked us back to the Hop Farm.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I wanted a simple and elegant dress so opted for a Bardot style with straps added. Unfortunately whilst throwing the bouquet one of the straps pinged off. Luckily I had a new husband who could sew!

Shoes were “something blue” bought from Paul Smith. Borrowed was a silver bangle, which belonged to Simon’s mum. And in the words of my father the “old” was my “old man” walking me down the aisle in the socks he’d worn at his own wedding 37 years previously!

FINDING THE DRESS | I was very lucky to find it in the 3rd shop I went in with my mum and bridesmaid Samantha on Chiltern Street in London.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Simon is a Fashion Designer so designed and had it made for him personally.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Lucy’s brother Matthew read a great piece of advice from Bob Hoskins to his daughter.  Simon’s Dad Richard continued a family tradition by reading an extract from the Prophet by Khalil Gibran.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Lucy’s two best friends – Trent and Samantha, her three cousins – Hannah, Ruby and Phoenix and Simon’s cousin Tilly. Trent flew over from America and Phoe from Canada. The most stressful part of the whole planning was trying to find outfits for all the girls. We opted for Vera Wang. Which worked well because both Trent and Phoenix got to them on in their home towns as they have international branches.

THE FLOWERS | From the lovely Hand Grown Flower Company and expertly arranged by Lucy’s wonderful mum Barbara. We wanted fresh locally grown wild country flowers so Zelie’s homegrown flowers were a perfect fit.

Fresh hops were also used to decorate the marquee.

THE CAKE | A masterpiece handmade by Lucy’s Aunty Annie, complete with hops and wild flowers made out of icing to go with the Hop Farm. We also asked friends and relatives to provide cakes and desserts.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The exceptional Amy Scaife from Love and Adventures. Chosen because we had seen her beautiful photos from a friend’s wedding. Patient and persuasive! Amy did an amazing job getting the best shots possible. We couldn’t recommend her highly enough. Amy also asked her friend Anne to help on the day and we are so glad she did as we got so many more beautiful photographs because of it.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Surf and turf! A seaside town ceremony with a country farm reception. We wanted it to feel like a celebration but without too much formality. The three things we wanted to get right where food, drink and dancing. Lunch was delicious bowls of salads to share and BBQ Lamb. Each table was designated a carver whose job it was to get everyone fed but also chatting and interacting. We built our own bar and had a lot of fun sourcing the beer from local breweries by cycling around them one hot Saturday with the best man and his girlfriend.

The band we took a punt on – we’d only ever seen them on Youtube. They were called the Superskas and they drove all the way from the Midlands and were by far the best band we’ve ever danced to! Amazing band and amazing front man and woman!

We handmade all the table centres with a lot of help from friends and family. They were miniature road signs with destinations special to us.

We were blessed with perfect weather so the outside bar with hay bale seating was well used. The ice cream van went down really well with the kids.

THE HONEYMOON | A wonderful wind down in Cornwall with our dogs.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Lucy bursting into tears before she had even got to the aisle and her dad thinking she had changed her mind!

The music – walking in to Ludivico Einaudi and walking out as a married couple to Caravan of Love.

The first dance and dancing to ska!

Getting picked up from the registry office in the most beautiful vintage Rolls Royce. We’d made friends with the landlord in our favourite pub in Rye who very kindly picked us up and took us for a glass of champagne, just the two of us before joining our guests back at the farm.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Stick together. Decide on the top three things that are important to you and focus on them first. Everything else will then fall into place. Try to delegate. Involve friends and family as they will feel much more part of your special day. Make lists but be creative. Don’t pay attention to Pinterest – your wedding will start to look like everyone else’s! Probably don’t hand-sew all the napkins for 140 guests! And when it’s over start planning when you can realistically get away with renewing your vows so you can do it all over again!
