Rustic Relaxed Hand Crafted Wedding

I fell head over heels for this delight of a wedding celebration, from the beautiful country setting to the sparklers in the evening, it all looked oh so dreamy.

Alexander and Sophie were married on the 20th August 2016 at Chaucer Barn in Norfolk. The vision was simple, a relaxed atmosphere complete with great food and drink and their loved ones. Much of their day was hand crafted, with blooms sourced from the New Covent Garden Flower Market arranged by the wedding party and most of the rustic decorations were home made. The tent looked splendid with long wooden tables adorned with blooms, floral napkins and natural touches. I adore the floral petal cake and the rustic wooden signage too.

Sophie chose a stunning gown by BHLDN, with its layers of tulle and pretty sleeves, she looked gorgeous. Alexander opted for a linen suit in pale grey, with a stripe tie for a classic yet summery look. I also have to shout about those darling bridesmaid outfits, they wore boho style tops and skirts with flower crowns, so pretty!

Thanks so much to Andy Davison for sharing these sensational shots with us.

THE VISION | We aimed to have a very relaxed, weekend wedding; with good food, good drinks and a close group of family and friends. The most important thing to us was that our guests could relax and enjoy themselves. I don’t think we were looking for the atmosphere of a traditional church wedding,

THE PLANNING PROCESS | It took a long time, we were engaged for around 5 years in total and planning was done in bursts with a big crescendo of planning closer to the date.

BUDGET | £15,000 (actual spend £25,000) whoops

THE VENUE | Chaucer Barn.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | The dress was found when walking past The Tailors Cat in Cambridge, in the window display, and I knew right away it was the one I wanted. When I went in to try it on at my fitting, they had already sold the dress that week to somebody who needed it in an emergency. So I went online and found it on BHLDN.com, which turns out to be great as it was on sale and I got loads of other things from the site in the end too. I didn’t wear a necklace, but my earrings were simple drop ones from Anthropologie.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Alex got his suit from Suit Supply. He was keen to wear a suit that was very summery, and not too formal, as it was planned as an outdoors wedding and it would be warm. He opted for a linen suit in the end, with shoes and belt from Russell and Bromley, shirt from Charles Tyrwhitt and tie from T.M. Lewin.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had two readings, one was from one of my favourite books, The Amber Spyglass, and the other was from Winnie the Pooh. We chose them as we feel they were a bit different and the sentiments were beautiful too. For music at the ceremony we had a live singing performance by Olivia Emma Watson who was perfect at setting the mood.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | We had a relatively large bridal party, with 4 bridesmaids and groomsmen. The bridesmaids were my 3 best friends since childhood and Alex’s sister. They all wore the same skirt and top, but in a colour of their choice. These were Louise Tulle skirts, and Chloe tops, from BHLDN.com … following my obsession with BHLDN.com I also got myself and the bridesmaids botanic garden robes made by Plum Pretty Sugar.

THE FLOWERS | We actually got all our flowers from New Covent Garden flower market, we drove there at an ungodly hour before heading to the barn a few days before the ceremony. It was worth the yawns for the price and quality of the flowers there though. The bridesmaids made the bouquets and buttonholes themselves the day before the ceremony.

THE CAKE | From Bees bakery in East London – the cake was stunning and fit very well with the overall look of the wedding. Alex had to hold it on his lap for 3 hours in the car drive, keeping it perfectly steady.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Andy Davison, who we now recommend to anyone we know getting married, he was just so so good.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | As I am very stubborn I refused to accept much help from anybody until the day before the wedding when I realised that I wouldn’t be able to do it all myself. Most of the decorations were a collective handmade effort from bridesmaids and family members and I was very lucky to have a friend staying the night before the wedding who is a very artistic Events Manager, she was instrumental in making the day look as good as it did (including concocting the bridesmaid’s floral headbands out of left over flowers from the arrangements).

For the marquee I wanted a rustic feel with wooden tables and no table cloths, with simple white flowers and candles running down the middle. I found some ideal tables from a local company down the road from the venue that were perfect and the lady who supplied them was just wonderful!

THE HONEYMOON | We took two weeks, overall, and had a good mix of relaxation as well as cultural activities. The first week we stayed in The Margi, a luxury boutique, 5 star hotel in the Athens suburb of Vouliagmeni. The area is full of restaurants, beaches, and relaxation. We spent a lot of time sunbathing, reading and taking walks. The second week we spent in Santorini, which is about as picture perfect a location as you can ask for. We enjoyed sunsets from boat cruises, wonderful meals, we rented a quad bike and explored the island, did wine tastings. It was so nice to be able to go on honeymoon right away, neither of us could imagine having to go into the office on that Tuesday after the big day.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Our favourite moment of the day was when we got to walk down to the marquee for the meal. It was just us and Andy, the photographer, and it was really nice to be welcomed into the marquee by seeing all our guests smiling and clapping. We were much more relaxed by that point and could start really enjoying the celebrations. I think most of our guests most enjoyed the Gin Bar, we brought along 14 different gins, with accompanying botanicals for each; there wasn’t much left in the morning.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Make a plan, with what to do each month before the wedding, almost like a planning calendar, so you can spread out the tasks and the costs to not get too stressed. We kept our focus on the big things early, the dress, the venue, the food, the booking of the registrar, so that even if a smaller bit of the planning fell through, we knew we would still be getting married, which was the most important bit anyway.
