Rustic Charm Meets Contemporary Pastel Barn Wedding

Rustic Charm Contemporary Pastel Barn Wedding http://www.bloomweddings.co.uk/

There is so much love at this wedding and I also have a lot of love for it. I’ll begin with the end of this lovely pair’s wedding report, bride Danielle tells us “remember this is one day but marriage is for life“. While planning, to help keep perspective and enjoy the whole planning process, it’s important to remember this. It’s something I really support and resonate with dear readers and it’s so very true.

The gorgeous Danielle and Craig were married on March 11th 2017 at The Normans in Yorkshire, they really fell for this flexible and personable venue, not to mention it’s ample and magical fairy lights… just you wait folks! They wanted a day where there was a sense of rustic northern charm with a modern and contemporary feel too. With it being early in Spring, they had pastel colours and pretty blooms but also hot chocolate to warm guests. Delicious.

Danielle’s dress or rather bridal separates, of bustier, lace top and skirt, really fitted the bill. It was by designer Catherine Deane and looked so very pretty teamed with a long veil and nude heels. Craig meanwhile went for a handsome suit and pale blue tie with tan shoes. So very lovely.

Thank you Bloom Weddings for sending us these amazing photographs, they really are wonderful.

THE PROPOSAL | Overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge in gorgeous San Francisco.

THE VISION | We wanted something both rustic northern charm, whilst also contemporary. We didn’t want anything too grand but rather a setting that was more down to earth as this felt more “us”.

That’s why when we saw the Norman’s with it’s converted farm with the rustic barn and cow stalls mixed with the contemporary courtyard we knew it was for us. As we were coming into spring we wanted to reflect that in pastel spring like colours but also reflect the fact it was cold with hot chocolates and outdoor heaters to keep people cosy and warm.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | A lot of googling and pinterest! Once we had the venue a lot of other things naturally slotted into place from the flowers to the string trio to the wedding stationery

BUDGET | We weren’t the best as we didn’t really think about budget beforehand but think we spent c.25k.

THE VENUE | The Normans – in rural Yorkshire just outside of York. A converted farm, sympathetically updated and a new venue (only opened for weddings in 2016). Three barns surrounding a beautiful courtyard, we had the ceremony barn where we had our civil ceremony. This was kept fairly original, which we loved as rustic and charming. The cow stalls where people could mingle and relax throughout the day and the wedding breakfast/evening barn, which had lots of updates with a bar and dance floor. There were tonnes of fairly lights, which made it romantic. It really just felt like us and had just the right amount of contemporary features. Laura and Oliver were the couple who run the venue, they themselves got married there and was the inspiration for converting their families barn into this beautiful wedding venue. We also liked that it was all in one place and (not small) but just quite a cosy space as oppose to a grand house with 10 rooms etc…

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Catherine Deane – small designer based in London and bought from her warehouse studio in Wapping, London. Even though looks like a dress is actually separates – bustier, lace top and flowing skirt. Also with a Catherine Deane veil. Accessories wise kept quite simple with a necklace I had had for years (originally bought on eBay I think but was a spinning ‘Good Luck’ pendant) and then earrings from Oliver Bonas. My shoes were nude croc heels from Reiss (bought so I could wear again!). Hair flowers, Liberty in Love.

FINDING THE DRESS | My friend wore Catherine Deane a few years ago and I couldn’t get it out of my head. Went to look round a few different shops in London and scoured the internet but kept coming back to her site and the fact could do separates appealed as a lot of the other dresses there would be one element I didn’t like. This was perfect and loved the fact I felt romantic and pretty and it also suited the venue in that it wasn’t too over the top.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Blue suit from an independent suit shop in Hitchin, Hertfordshire (Holmes and Son), paired with a cream waistcoat, light blue tie both also from Holmes and Son, and tan brown shoes from Dune.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Readings were by Craig’s sister Hayley who did a beautiful reading from Captain Correllis Mandolin, and my brother James who wrote his own personalised reading about me and Craig, which meant so much to us. Music we walked in to Einaudi’s I Giorni and walked out to the Beatles, Here comes the sun! Both performed by the Yorkshire String Trio.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My maid of honour was my twin sister Gabrielle (was never going to be anyone else!), and then two school friends Emma and Lucy, and two friends who I became close to when I moved to London 6 years ago who went to Uni with my sister, Stella and Becca. They also wore statement separates in blush pink from Coast.

THE FLOWERS | Flowers were a mix of pastel colours (afraid I have no flower knowledge so not sure what types) but put together by Jill at Melanies Florist in Tadcaster.

THE CAKE | Our fantastic cake was 3 tiers – Lemon, Vanilla and Chocolate Salted Caramel. Finished with fondant icing – one tier with silver leafing, one with marbling effect and then a beautiful iced flower on the top. Created by the very talented Kean from the Blossom Tree Cake Company in Harrogate.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our incredibly talented photographers were Chris and Anii from Bloom Weddings. A couple themselves, they captured the day perfectly. They managed to capture the emotions from the tears, pride and happiness. Also loved both the stylised shots in the surrounding fields/barns but also the natural shots of people laughing, mingling, dancing (and drinking!). Absolutely perfect.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We didn’t have a particular ‘theme’ but stuck to broadly to pastel colours from the flowers and the wedding stationery (which was from Papier). We had a polaroid camera for people to clip up photo’s of themselves and the day. We had lots and lots of candles and fairy lights to create a romantic feel. Also hand made jars with twine (filled with flowers and candles) and bunting (made from a variety of fabrics on the hen do) both fitting in with the rustic barn style. Blocks of wood and a wooden sign hired from the Hermitage in Hitchin also added to this. Our beautiful pale blue invites were from Card Lab Letter Press – they looked like a CD card with the invite tucked inside. We had tea coffee and hot choc for after dinner. We had cheese toasties and bacon sandwiches for the evening snacks. We hired a massive light up D&C for the dancefloor. Our favours were dipped stem ginger cookies were Teonis who are a small supplier who are stocked in our favourite Deli in Harrogate, Weetons. We then placed them in bags and tied with twine to fit in with the rest of the décor.

THE HONEYMOON | Three unbelievable weeks – three places. First up was Bahamas, which was a chance to properly chill out and relax, mainly spent in a luxury resort, where we were for 5 days. Saw dolphins and explored the town but mainly just relaxing. Then onto Costa Rica for a tour around the country for 10 days. Incredible experience visiting the cloud forest, zip lining, paddle boarding on a lake, exploring the national park, seeing sloths and monkeys, hot river, hot spring, seeing the Arenal volcano. Quite active but an incredible mix of climates and wildlife. And then ended with 5 days in Miami in a luxury hotel on Miami beach. We went to a basketball game, went to the Miami open, visited Nasa and the Everglades national park and just enjoyed the sites and sounds of Miami beach. Fabulous end to a fabulous holiday!!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The whole thing!! Gosh really can’t think of one stand out moment because the day was perfect from start to finish. That moment of walking down the aisle as husband and wife was pretty magical as you have that overwhelming happiness having just married your best friend but also having all your favourite and closest friends and family there just for you is a feeling I can’t describe but we felt very loved and lucky. Also loved the first dance (Jose from Eden) followed by a lot more dancing to our band, Bandit, drinking lots of G&T’s, mojitos and Jaegarbombs. Think the evening was just when all the formalities were out of the way and we really let go and enjoyed ourselves.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Not sure if you mean advice for life or planning a wedding but one thing which advice for both is working as a team (definitely felt like we both contributed) but also find what you both enjoy and bring that to the table, so Craig loved organising the band whilst I preferred looking after the décor for example. I also think that remember this is one day but marriage is for life. Think it helps to put stuff in perspective sometimes. We wanted it to be perfect and for everyone to have the best day but we also wanted to still be able to enjoy the engagement by doing all the stuff we love to do. Meant that once wedding and honeymoon was over we didn’t then think ‘now what!?!’ or have the classic post wedding blues! In terms of advice for life, always remember it’s the little things which are often the big things. Always make time for each other. And finally, this quote from Bob Marley is one I used in my speech which I think sums it up perfectly: “He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.”
