Carrie and Chris were married in May at Polllokshields Burgh Hall, Glasgow. They wanted their day to be relaxed with a touch of vintage and to be a great party full of scrumptious food.
Carrie wore the most beautiful custom made 1950s inspired dress with the sweetest short veil to suit her gorgeous bobbed hair, not to mention the shoes. While Chris went for a dapper Italian suit and grey/blue tie.
I am dying over the pretty flowers, with my favourite pink peonies used in Carrie’s bouquet alongside some roses and natural looking foliage. That bunting cake is just adorable too.
I love this sweet wedding, Carrie and Chris are just the most beautiful couple.

Wedding Date…. 19/05/12
The Proposal…. Chris proposed to me in the small village of Port Appin, Argyll, a little village on the shores of Loch Linnhe. We were on a little bench keeping each other warm taking in the views to the islands of Lismore and Mull when he popped the question. We headed back to the hotel at Port Appin and had a celebratory glass of fizz – champagne for her, lager for him – by the open fire.
The Vision for the day…. A relaxed wedding with a touch of vintage, Chris and I were keen to have a celebratory party with our nearest and dearest. The food was also important to us so the venue had to be somewhere that you could bring the caterers too. And we wanted a Glasgow wedding if we could make it happen, all in the one place so that the day could run from the ceremony through to the dancing at night with little interruption.
The Planning process…. You definitely have your own ideas but you want to get the benefit from everyone who’s done it before. A lot of internet research and, even though it’s a cliché, all of the wedding magazines going particularly the Scottish Wedding magazine. This helped us focus on what we wanted as much as highlighting what we didn’t want. There’s loads of information on websites and there’s a real community of businesses and bloggers out there that are great at sharing ideas. We talked to our families as well to get their input and to get everyone involved in some way. That way everyone feels like they’re part of the special day.
Budget…. Whatever your budget is, add 10% at the start and keep on top of it!
The Venue… Polllokshields Burgh Hall, Glasgow. Fantastic venue for an all day wedding, they were really helpful and again as they’ve been doing it for some time they seem to know what’s needed on the day. They were very accommodating and you could really feel that it was something they liked doing.
The Dress + Accessories… I knew what I didn’t want more than what I did. I wanted to feel comfortable and fit with the overall feel of the day. The magazines were helpful in narrowing down what I wanted and also I’d seen other brides in dresses I liked. I tried some vintage places and in the end I opted for a handmade dress in a 50’s style cut. It was made by a friend, a really talented friend, who also made the bridesmaid dress, plus dresses for three other guests. She also made the bunting for us. I enjoyed doing it that way, having my friends around me making my wedding dress. From the outset I knew what shoes I wanted and I picked them up on a trip to London. They were satin ivory peep toe louboutins. I wasn’t sure what to wear on my head during the day. I had a headpiece and jewellery – a plain pearl bracelet with some pearl droplet earrings – picked out for the whole day but at the last minute opted for a short 50’s style veil for the day and the headpiece for the evening.
Groom’s attire… It was going to be a made to measure suit lounge suit but that didn’t quite work out. There’s not a massive choice in Central Scotland and what there is can be expensive even compared to London prices, where admittedly there’s more choice. What it does have is lots of off the peg specialists. The main thing I found was that when I said the suit was for my wedding, there were lots of people who were really accommodating. It had to be a suit for ‘high days and holidays.’ The one I went for was an Italian suit from Harvey Nichols and again the guy in the shop was really helpful, suggesting colourings for ties and shoes that would go.
The Readings + Music…. Music for the ceremony was a bit more difficult than we thought it would be and was pretty last minute. We went traditional but must have listened to a hundred or so versions before picking one. The reading was also a bit last minute and we’ve a friend to thank for the one we picked.
At night we had our friends DJ rather than a band because that’s what we like – they did an amazing job of keeping people on the dance floor, catering for a wide audience. The first dance was of course the best tune of the night!
Beautiful bridesmaids…. Rosie Revell, my 15 year old niece. She did a fantastic job, keeping me level headed but also reminding of what a big day it was.
The Flowers… Di at Roots & Fruits – she was brilliant. She got a really good feel for the day and was really helpful the flowers were stunning.
The Cake… We got the idea from Scottish Wedding magazine and a friend of the family made it for us. The groom’s mother also made the base tier, which was a really nice touch.
Your Photographer…. Caroline Weiss from Candysnaps. Basically, when we saw her pictures, we knew this was who we wanted to do it for us. Her style is very relaxed and captures the atmosphere of the day beautifully. On the morning of the wedding, it was also really nice to have her around as she seemed really calm compared to everyone else! And eight months pregnant as well!
The Details + Decor…. Pollokshields Burgh Hall is a fantastic venue, on the edge of a park on the southside of Glasgow. Because the venue is looked after by a trust, you are a wee bit limited in how you decorate – no nails in the walls! – but that fitted exactly with what we wanted and the venue looked great on the day. The main hall has amazing stained glass windows and toward the end of our meal, around 6pm, the sun came out and streamed through the glass, which was perfect.
Our caterers, Saxby & Revell: a couple of cooks, were also brilliant. We’d spent a few nights with them ahead of the wedding and they helped us through the planning process as well as keeping us right on the menu. The food was beautiful and we’ve had lots of really positive comments about it. The starter was served at the table, with a buffet style main course and dessert with tea and coffee at the tables. It was seamless, the service was fantastic and the food was spectacular!
You also need to set up a bar and we were lucky to get Lux Bars for our day. Again, we’ve had loads of positive comments about how professional the bar set up was and their service was brilliant. They were open from immediately after the ceremony through to proper closing time. As well as stocking our favourites, including bringing draught lager which was a must, their advice on drink for the day, down to wine varieties to go with the meal, was great.
Our invitations were done by a friend, Jane, and matched the theme. They brought over a book of 70’s adverts and we worked from there, using a Las Vegas ad for the basis of the invitation. Again, we wanted something a wee bit different and what Jane produced worked a treat.
The Honeymoon…. We’ve been to America a couple of times and it felt right to go back there. We wanted a bit of familiarity so we could relax into it, and also something new to make it memorable. We started with five nights in Las Vegas which is definitely memorable. Next was five nights in New York, more familiar territory so we were able to get into the swing of things pretty quick. It was a brilliant trip.
Memorable moments….. Not just saying this, but it’s hard to pick. Seeing each other at the start of the day for the first time was pretty special. The bride waiting to go into the ceremony with her Dad and niece. Seeing all your friends and family come into the hall for the ceremony and knowing it’s going to be a good day. The speeches were also not too bad, the right length and even the odd joke. The food was brilliant and seeing the catering staff bringing in the dessert with Glayva and coffee was really nice. The first dance was great, and then having more guests come at night who all seemed to be up for dancing.
Advice for other couples… Everyone says it, but try to take some time together on the day. You will relax a bit on the day and make the most of it. In the planning, involve everyone and get their advice, it is your day but if you make your friends and family a part of it then they’ll enjoy it more as well. It all makes for a great atmosphere.
For grooms – don’t worry about writing a speech, all you have to do is say thank you for coming, be nice to your wife, make one decent gag and tell everyone to have a good time. It’s the best man’s job to get all the laughs.
