This wedding features so many of my fave elements in a wedding. Colour, care free attitude, glamping, DIY and cool outfits. But you know what I love the most? That these two didn’t care about it raining, it didn’t impact their wedding in a field one jot. Folks, you really do not need fret about the weather on your big day.
WWW readers Kayla and Badger tied the knot on the 3rd September 2016 and hosted their day in a paddock in Oxfordshire. They had a super personal humanist ceremony followed by a big party in a marquee. Oh and the marquee looked pretty darn awesome decked in rainbow coloured pom poms, rag bunting, swags, and all home made too no less. There were ribbons on the chairs and home-grown Dahlias everywhere, plus a stunning naked cake. YUM.
Kayla chose to wear an off the shoulder, made to order Forget Me Not Designs gown, which looked so very chic. Badger and the boys chose blue jackets and waistcoats, teamed with chinos and red ties for a modern yet casual style. Their children looked so adorable too, tutu love!
Thanks goes to Michelle Wood for providing these sensational shots.
THE PROPOSAL | We have been together for 13 years (so teenage sweet hearts) badger proposed 4 years ago when our first born was 4 weeks old, we were in bed sleep deprived but it was perfect!
THE VISION | Big colourful homemade relaxed party! Filled with friends and family!! All we wanted was a massive party where we could laugh, dance and be merry! And we wanted a space where people could camp and make it a two day thing!!
THE PLANNING PROCESS | So we had no strict plan on what we wanted, it was all pretty free flow and if we liked an Idea we kind of went with it!! I went through magazines and blogs and picked little bits of all different things. We are quite last minute people so most of it came together at the last minute.
So many of our friends and family offered help which was amazing! We also wanted to use local, small suppliers as much as possible!
We knew we wanted sharing food so every one was interacting and chatting and sharing, Badger’s mum offered to do the food, she made the most amazing home made massive picnic for 100 people!
BUDGET | We did pretty much everything ourselves. Food, décor, flowers, cake, even the picnic benches were home made made by us and friends and family! So its hard to say but I would guess it was roughly £12,000.
THE VENUE | We knew we didn’t want a wedding venue as such, as we wanted it to be as relaxed as possible, no time or music restrictions and somewhere people could camp!
When one of Badger’s customers (he is a plumber) said we could use their beautiful paddock at the front of their land for free we jumped at it!! It was perfect had beautiful views over Oxfordshire.
One of our closest friends owns a marquee company with amazing traditional marquees so it was a no brainer to use him!! It was decked out with fairy lights and had windows all around!! It was perfect!! We even ended up having our humanist ceremony in the porch of the marquee as it was such wet weather!!
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | It was hand made, made to measure by two sisters in the Isle Of White! A little shop that I found at a wedding fair! Forget-Me-Not Designs.
Ted baker – shoes.
The garter was one of my bridesmaids (something borrowed).
Hair by Ameila Smith, she did mine and all the bridesmaids! It even stayed looking good with all the rain we had.
FINDING THE DRESS | I tried on sooooo many dresses, slinky ones, puffy ones, short ones, I didn’t really know what I wanted as I had just had our second baby when I started dress shopping so needed something supportive but still wanted something fun!! So when I found my dress at a wedding fair I was so happy, I tried on a sample and as it was made to measure by hand I changed a few bits and it was perfect! Fitted like a glove!!
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Badger wanted to be quite casual but still look good, so he choose some chinos and then he got his jacket and waistcoat from dobell.com.
And Wilfred our son wore a similar outfit as his daddies and he looked super cute!!
THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had a humanist ceremony so had lots of readings on love, trust and family! As we have had our two children before we were married we wanted them to be a big part of the readings and ceremony!
Music was very important, we wanted people to dance, so we had a live cover band to get the party started then had two DJs who kept us dancing till 3.30am!!
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Our 4 beautiful bridesmaids were from all different parts of my life, they threw me the best hen do at Wilderness Festival and helped me party the night away at the wedding!! They all wore dresses from ASOS and they chose all different shoes!
And of course our little girl Betsy was the most beautiful flower girl!! She wore a big tutu and Badger’s mum made a lovely little top for her out of the same material as my wedding dress!
THE FLOWERS | We wanted big and bright, no pastels in sight!! The flowers were all grown by my mum’s friend just down the road! She grew 300 of the most beautiful Dahlias!
My mum volunteered to do the flowers and they came out amazingly!! We collected vintage bottles for months from charity shops and a elderly neighbour gave us her life time collection of hand blown bottles which was amazing.
THE CAKE | Ahh the cake!! Well I wasn’t overly bothered about having a cake but one of my bridesmaids Laura is an amazing baker and she said oh I will make you a cake, I expected a little sponge but what turned up was the most beautiful and delicious 3 tier chocolate and Victoria sponge cake! It was incredible… I even had if for breakfast the next day!!
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Michelle was recommended to us by another photographer and as soon as we saw her web page we knew it was exactly want we wanted. Relaxed, natural but fun!
She captured the day so amazingly, she made everyone feel so relaxed and captured so many perfect moments! She is such a lovely person as soon as you meet her you feel you have been friends forever!
We cant stop looking at the photos, the way Michelle took them makes us feel like we were right back in the moment! And she caught the little moments we missed.
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We did all the décor ourselves, collected loads of bottles for the flowers, made loads of paper pompoms and I made hundreds of meters of rag bunting out of paper, material and ribbon! We had little pom pom bunting a friend made every where, it was a explosion of colour, it was fantastic! Even the benches all the children sat on were made by my dad the day before!
The detail in the food was amazing, Badger’s mum spent months testing and trying all the food she put into picnic hampers, she made each table a “wedding pie” accompanied with big salads, cheeses and pickles, all our favourite things!
One of the best thing was most people camped, which was so much fun especially the morning after. A lot of people hired bell tents from a local hire place and others pitched up their own tents!
THE HONEYMOON | We went to Crete for a family honeymoon, a week of sunshine, food and swimming in the sea.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Firstly it was everyone setting up, doing the décor, arranging the beautiful flowers, cooking the food, putting up tents and everything in-between, it was amazing seeing all our friends and family wanting to help us, it was such a lovely feeling!!
So it did rain ALL day, to begin with I was worried about it but there was nothing we could do, if anything it kept everyone in the marquee and it had such a buzz about the place!! We had got 10 umbrellas and they were a life saver!!! I kicked off my shoes and have a very muddy wedding dress to show for it but I wouldn’t have changed it!! Someone told me on the day “a wet knot is never undone” lets hope that’s true haha!
One of the most amazing thing was how far so many people had come, we had family and friends from Australia, Spain and Ireland! Amazing people came so far for US!!
Another one was Betsy on my hip, Wilfred on Badger’s and us four having a good old dance, loved it!!
The whole day was memorable, every time we looked around people were laughing and chatting and that’s all we had hoped for!!
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Just enjoy it!!! There is no rules, do what is YOU!!! It’s a celebration of your love!!
Don’t sweat the small stuff, everyone is their for you… it will be epic no matter what!
