Modern Rose Gold Barn Wedding

Welcome to another glorious autumnal morning and a brand new week here at Whimsical Wonderland Weddings. We have so much loveliness in store for you folks this week, you’re going to feel truly spoilt. For a real treat today, we have WWW readers Nadia and Kenny’s delightful wedding day, held on the 13th May 2017 at Cripps Barn in the picturesque Cotswolds.

The pair’s vision revolved around atmosphere rather than a theme, and a relaxed, loving and warm day was at the forefront of their plans. They really wanted to inject their Caribbean and Scottish roots into the day too, which is always a lovely sentiment. Now, it goes without saying that their day was utterly stylish too. I am sure you’ve already spotted Nadia’s dreamy dip hem gown, modern and so on trend, it looked sensational on her. Kenny and the boys went for traditional kilts with a contemporary twist and the maids donned Ted Baker dresses.

The flowers were one of the stand out styling elements in my eyes. Particularly Nadia’s Peony laden peach and blue bouquet, which just looked heavenly, I bet it smelt wonderful too. The rose gold cake from M&S no less, really made a bold and elegant statement.

There is so much love in these divine images by Paul Fuller Kent Photography, not to mention happy moments and treasured memories. Thanks for sharing them with us Paul.

THE PROPOSAL | Kenny proposed at our flat on Good Friday morning with a huge bouquet of flowers and champagne, I was still in my Pyjamas thinking we were spending Easter with his family. He then whisked me off to a surprise weekend in Paris we stayed at L’Hotel, favourite haunt of Oscar Wilde and had a fancy dinner at their Michelin starred restaurant. When we got back to London on Easter Sunday he’d arranged for both of our families to meet us at the Soho Hotel for champagne to celebrate. It was wonderful. He’d designed the ring with my sister, I’m not a fan of diamonds and had never really cared about an engagement ring, it’s a gorgeous art deco style ring with a pale blue sapphire very, delicate, intricate and very personal.

THE VISION | We both just wanted a relaxed weekend in the Cotwolds with our loved ones, good food, good wine and good music bringing in hints of my Caribbean background and Kenny’s Scottish heritage. We didn’t want anything too stuffy or formal.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We’ve both had a busy couple of years at work and had both also moved jobs so planning sort of fell into those quick moments in between life, it meant we were very decisive and didn’t overly worry about things. We also planned regularly throughout the year so there wasn’t ever a time when the wedding was overwhelming or unmanageable, just a lot of little tasks to tick off. I think getting the venue ASAP is key – it’s crazy how quickly places book up and it really shapes the feel of the rest of the wedding. We were adamant that we wanted a Saturday wedding; we wanted to cause as little stress for our guests as possible so we made sure there were travel and accommodation options to suit all budgets and no one had to sacrifice their holiday time to come to celebrate. We had people travelling from all over the world to be there so the little we could do to make that easier the better.

THE VENUE | Cripps Barn, Bibury.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Karen Willis Holmes -DYG “Design Your Gown”.

Ted Baker Peech Shoes in light blue.

FINDING THE DRESS | I went to Angelica Bridal in Angel with my sister, a beautiful small boutique with a wonderful selection of dresses and great staff. I tried on a few gowns but quickly liked the idea of picking both the top and bottom of the gown to make my own individual dream dress. My sister and I used to LOVE watching the Sound of Music growing up so the long train at the back is inspired by Maria’s in the film. I have quite classic taste and like things to be quite simple so I liked to classic yet modern look of the dress.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Kenny knew he wanted to wear a Kilt for his wedding but preferred the low key elegant style of a modern kilt rather than the more traditional ones. He went to McGregor McDuff in Glasgow with his best man, Chris and his dad, Billy and they helped him pick out everything from the jacket colours to the buttons and tartan. I have to say I think they enjoyed the Celtic game and beers afterwards more than the tartan swatches!

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We didn’t want anything too cliché or stuffy, we also wanted to hit the right tone of serious but not too sombre. We played David Bowie “Sound & Vision” and Talking Heads “This Must Be The Place” as guests walked in, which are two of Kenny’s favourite songs. I walked down the aisle to Massenet “Thais” Meditation, which I used to play on the violin growing up so it meant a lot to me and my parents. We played Debussy “Clair de Lune” for the signing of the register and walked out to “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis & The News, from my favourite film Back to the Future. We had a steel band for the reception and then a soul band in the evening to get everyone up and dancing.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Two of my elder bridesmaids wore Ted Baker dresses, which worked with the pale pink hints in the flowers and cake. One of my younger bridesmaids prefers trousers so she opted to wear a smart dark blue three piece suit from River Island which tied in well with the Groom’s colours and my youngest bridesmaid wore a rose gold dress from Chi Chi London.

THE FLOWERS | We live near a gorgeous florist, Scarlet & Violet in Kensal Green, when Kenny proposed he bought me a huge bouquet from them (he also dropped a bottle of champagne all over their floor in the process!) so we knew we wanted them to do our flowers. Knowing that far in advance meant we could meet with Vic a year from our wedding and see what would be in season and get an idea for what we wanted. My favourite flowers are peonies, which were luckily in season, and Kenny liked the blues of thistles and sweet pea. We didn’t want the wedding to be too “pink” so went for a mix of pastel pinks, peach, blue and lots of greens. S&V have a very natural “undone” feel about them and Vic is amazing at working out your individual styles, I found out a week before the wedding they also did Kate Moss’s wedding so we’re in good company!

THE CAKE | We went for a Marks & Spencer rose gold cake it was chocolate on the inside and surrounded with white chocolate hoops, it was so much cheaper than others we had been quoted and tasted incredible, given we were travelling quite a distance from our home it was great that we could pick this up from a local store on the day and know it was going to be a quality product. The rose gold tied in well with the pastels of our flowers and our florist gave us some trailing jasmine and David Austen roses to tie it all in.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Paul Fuller was our photographer and we just knew from the moment we met him we trusted him. Going through the planning process it’s clear that to some people you’re just another wedding and to others they know that this is one of the most important milestones in your life and it’s so special, Paul was that second type of person. He drove from Kent to London just to meet us in person to discuss our wedding and ideas. During the wedding day I hardly saw him and then when we looked at the photos he’d caught all of these incredible moments and it’s that blending in and observing that just creates such wonderful photos and memories.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Pinterest was my friend in planning the wedding. It’s remarkable how much you can save without having to be particularly creative. We bought a white decorative mirror from Wilkos and some white chalk pens and created our decorative table plan, I loved the reflections of guests as they went up to the mirror to find their seats. Each table was named after a film, e.g we sat at “Fantastic Mr Fox” as Kenny’s surname is Fox, and our University friends sat at Robin Hood as we met at Nottingham University etc. we found some great alternative film posters on the internet and framed them for the centrepieces.

We had personalised chocolates from Morse Toad as our favours as well as wooden place names from VM Bespoke, which tied in with the rustic feel of the barn. We decided against a photo booth and bought an instant polaroid instead so that people could take pictures for the guest book. I found some great palm print cushions, which added a hint of tropical design to the outside deck and we had my favourite rum and Kenny’s favourite whiskey at the bar for all our guests to try!

THE HONEYMOON | We’re going to Bali for three weeks to have a bit of relaxing beach time as well as enjoying some hiking, surfing and white water rafting.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Far too many to count but once we were married we walked up the aisle we waited in a little room for five minutes whilst everyone filed out before making our confetti entrance. It was a really magical having that time together to take in that we had just gotten married! It’s amazing how little of each other you actually see during the day because you’re surrounded by EVERYONE you know. I’m so pleased we had that.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Be clever with your budget. Some things are worth spending that little extra on and they really make a difference, others no one really cares about. I didn’t care about a fancy car to get me the ten minute journey from the hotel to the venue, I did care about having cloth napkins rather than paper. It’s your wedding so make sure you do what you want, we didn’t want a first dance so we didn’t have one. We wanted a bouncy castle, so we got one, make it yours!
