Modern & Natural Pink Metallic Wedding

Modern Natural Pink Metallic Wedding http://photosbyzoe.co.uk/

Sometimes I really do pinch myself that I get to read such wonderful love stories every day and I soak up each and every one. This wedding feature today really is modern elegance at it’s best and includes a super loved up couple who you can just feel the romance radiating from.

WWW readers Laura and Bernard tied the knot on Sunday 2 August 2015 at St Andrews St Salvators Chapel followed by a reception at The Byre Theatre. Both venues were meaningful to the couple as Laura studied at the university and worked part time at the theatre when she was a student. But planning from Australia was no mean feat and they hired a wedding planner to ensure everything ran smoothly for them.

They hoped to create a natural day with dusty pink, gold and silver accents and a nod to their Scottish and Australian heritage. I so love the blooms, Laura’s bouquet was just so whimsy and the table décor looked magical. She also wore a dreamy gown by Amaline Vitale accessoried with a lace edged veil, while the boys looked dashing in kilts. Wow.

Thanks so much to the fabulous Photos by Zoe for sharing these sensational shots.

THE PROPOSAL | My now husband proposed in the same place where we had first met, seven years previously, as housemates in the Whistler ski resort, Canada. He popped the question on a gondola lift mid-way between the resort’s two ski mountains. It would have all gone off without a hitch if it wasn’t for the fact that it had been the busiest day of the season so far and when we went to catch the last gondola of the day (he had requested a private carriage from the lift operator earlier) there were none free! After spending lots of time waiting around for a private carriage we finally got one, but at the last minute a family burst through the doors and attempted to get on with us. The lift operator stopped them. That’s when I started to get butterflies in my stomach. It made the proposal all the more special when it finally came!

THE VISION | The overall style of the day was modern elegance with lots of dusty pink, gold and silver accents and natural Scottish and Australian influences. As Scotland was the location of the wedding we wanted to include a few traditional elements, without going over the top.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | I knew from the start that I wanted to get married in my home country of Scotland. That made planning the logistics from Australia a big challenge, so we gave ourselves 20 months between getting engaged and the wedding day itself. After several frustrating months of false starts, during which we explored and dismissed several wedding venues, we eventually settled on the Byre Theatre and hired a wedding planner. Lemon Box Studios were fantastic in the last few months and I enjoyed working with them on all the smaller details, including the invitations, table decorations and styling.

THE VENUE | I had enjoyed memorable family holidays in St Andrews when I was younger and studied at the University, so I always knew it would be a special place to be married. Luckily my husband agreed! We held the service in the beautiful university chapel, which dates back to the fifteenth century, and the reception at the Byre Theatre. We looked at other venues in town but none of them gave us the flexibility we were looking for, allowing us to put our own stamp on the day and only a short walk from the church. The Byre is also a very special place to me as it’s where I worked part-time while at University, and also where I held my 21st birthday!

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I got my dress in Australia from Melbourne-based designer, Amaline Vitalie. My shoes and veil were from Etsy. My earrings were a gift from my parents and were purchased from a local St Andrews jeweller a few days before the wedding. I also wore my Mum’s garter from her wedding day – my something old, borrowed and blue! Hair and make-up were provided by Made-Up, an Edinburgh-based company who I would highly recommend as they answered by brief perfectly and kept myself, my bridesmaids and my mother calm on the morning of the wedding – no easy task!

FINDING THE DRESS | I knew from the start that I wanted a form fitting dress with cap sleeves. I went to several appointments at bridal stores in Melbourne, and even tried on a few second hand dresses, but nothing felt quite right. I was about to take a gamble and order a dress online when I paid a final visit to Amaline Vitalie. I was lucky enough to get an appointment with the designer herself and spent time discussing what might suit me. As soon as I tried on Edith I knew it was the dress for me as it fitted so well and made me feel like me, only a better version! It also had an unusual split down the centre, and satin belt, which made it stand out from other dresses that I had tried on.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | We rented kilts from Slaters in Edinburgh. It made for an interesting fitting the day before the wedding, trying to explain to three Aussie blokes how to wear the traditional highland outfit – a few even put their kilts on backwards!

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had a beautiful poem from Scottish poet, Christine De Luca called ‘The Journey’, read by my oldest friend and bridesmaid and 1 Corinthians I3, read by the groom’s brother. I walked down the aisle to Canon in D by Pachelbel.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I knew from the start that I didn’t want my bridesmaids in matching dresses. They are both artists with a unique sense of style, and live in different countries, so it would have been really difficult to agree on a single dress. One of my bridesmaids, who is based in the UK, spotted a dress in Monsoon that she loved. My other bridesmaid, from Canada, chose a dress in a similar shade from the same store and luckily they complemented each other well. To tie their looks together, I bought them both a matching vintage hair slide from Not on the High Street.

THE FLOWERS | Pamela at Twigs and Twine did a wonderful job on the flowers. I wanted eucalyptus to represent our life in Australia, and thistles to signify my Scottish heritage. I am also a big fan of proteas and wanted them included in my bridal bouquet. I sent Pamela some links from my Pinterest board and left her to do the rest. I was really impressed with the final result. The venue was also styled to perfection with eucalyptus trailing down the middle of each table, dotted with flowers that featured in my bouquet.

THE CAKE | We didn’t want to spend too much and were pleasantly surprised to discover that M&S do a great range of wedding cakes. We went for a white chocolate option with a pink hoop decoration – which just happened to fit in with our wedding colours perfectly! I didn’t get to try it as I was too busy strutting my stuff on the dancefloor, but I hear it was delicious!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Zoe Barrie from Photos by Zoe did a fantastic job of our photos. As a Fife local she has captured many beautiful weddings in and around the town, and our wedding was no exception. She went above and beyond to capture all the little details and got some lovely candid shots that tell a beautiful story of the day. I particularly enjoyed getting our couple portraits taken at the harbour, with the stormy clouds in the background – luckily we escaped the infamous Scottish rain!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Lemon Box Studios did a fantastic job of the styling and décor, responding to my brief perfectly. For example, I wanted a display for the favours that wouldn’t detract from the table styling. Lemon Box Studios created a beautiful display table with fudge for the lassies and whisky for the lads wrapped in monogrammed paper. We also had personalised chalk boards that featured special messages to our guests and included the Celtic knot design from our wedding invitations, which tied the whole look together beautifully.

THE HONEYMOON | We spent 10 days in Italy – five days relaxing in the Cinque Terre, followed by a whistle-stop tour of Florence, Siena and Rome.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Walking down the aisle and seeing all my friends and family, who had travelled from all over the world to be there. Our first dance and the speeches were also very special moments and I loved partying the night away with everyone. Our band, Corra, was fantastic and got everyone up on the dance floor.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Give yourself a few days to relax with friends and family before the big day. I flew in to Scotland a few days before the wedding for my hen party in Edinburgh, which allowed me to spend time with my nearest and dearest before all the excitement of the big day. Be sure to spend some quality time with your partner too. We had a few dance lessons in preparation for our first dance, which was fantastic as it allowed us to disconnect from all the stress of planning.

Also, if your venue doesn’t provide one, I strongly recommend hiring an on-the-day coordinator, as it allows you and your family to relax and enjoy the day. We had a few hiccups along the way and they were able to think on their feet to find a solution, and re-jig the program so nobody noticed.
