Mismatched Berry Summer DIY Wedding

Be prepared to feel that warm tingling feeling when you view these images and accompanying report today. This loved up summer wedding is full to the brim with lovely ideas and emotional moments.

Ben and Rachel were married on the 12th August 2016 and held their reception at Hayne Barn in Devon. They envisioned a day which celebrated their love and commitment, complete with a lot of fun and a mismatched berry theme. The rich red, purple, pink and blue tones really worked wonderfully together, especially in the divine florals. Rachel’s bouquet was a real shop stopper and included seasonal and local blooms. In fact Rachel’s whole bridal look was gorgeous with her donning a lace gown and dreamy veil with her hair in pretty plaits. The bridesmaids wore coordinating frocks in different tones, while the boys all wore navy suits.

Rustic DIY décor was used throughout, with a wheelbarrow filled with seed favours, jars covered in hessian and a scrumptious naked cake. Isn’t a hand crafted wedding oh so special?

Thanks goes to Colin Ross Photography for providing these amazing shots.

THE PROPOSAL | The proposal took place on the morning of New Years Eve 2015. Ben took me on a beautiful cliff-top walk ending up on our special secluded Devon beach where he got down on one knee and proposed with my Grandma’s gorgeous ring. It was the very best way to start a new year!

THE VISION | We wanted to celebrate love, togetherness, commitment and have a lot of fun! We decided we didn’t want everything to match so we went for a loose berry colour theme.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | The first decision we made was whether to get married in 8 months or 16, as we wanted a summer wedding. We decided it was all far too exciting and we wanted to celebrate sooner rather than later so it was full steam ahead with planning. Our 2 amazing families and 10 fantastic bridesmaids worked very hard to help us plan and prepare for our special day.

BUDGET | We definitely didn’t want to spend the national average so we did lots of DIY which saved us lots of money! It also made the day feel really personalised.

THE VENUE | We were married in Bradninch Baptist Church, a special church to Rachel’s family where she was dedicated as a baby. It is a relatively small village church so was packed full with our guests which was great fun! We were very lucky to find the wonderful Hayne Barn for our reception. It is a beautiful threshing barn with stunning grounds and ticked all our boxes.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Rachel’s friend recommended an amazing charity, The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation, which sells second-hand, new and preloved dresses via La Boutique and uses their profits to organise and fund weddings for people with terminal illnesses. La Boutique was the perfect place to find a dress so with high hopes Rachel booked an appointment. Rachel took her Mum, Rosie and Lou (2 bridesmaids) with her and after having lots of fun trying on so many dresses that weren’t quite right, one finally appeared that got everybody excited. We were all very happy to have found ‘the one’. It is a beautiful, lace Victoria Kay dress.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Ben went suit shopping with his older brother and they found him a very smart, navy, TM Lewin 3 piece number. He looked very handsome! All the groomsmen wore navy suits with brown shoes and berry coloured ties.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Brides entrance: Tenerife Sea.

Hymns during ceremony: Blessed be the name; Lord I lift your name on high; Here I am to worship; In Christ Alone.

Singing the register: Izzie Clarey, bridesmaid sang ‘Panis Angelcus by Franck and Ave Maria – Bach/ Gounod.

Ext bride and groom: Sam Cooke Wonderful world.

First dance: Stevie Wonder – Sir Duke.

Readings: 1 Corinthians 13: 1-8. Romans 12: 9-13.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Rachel has so many great friends and couldn’t imagine having the best day of her life without them being a huge part of it. All the girls wore a variety of berry colours. There were 5 pairs of matching dresses ranging from navy to raspberry. Rachel also has 4 gorgeous nieces who were delighted with their special pretty dresses. They all looked very beautiful.

THE FLOWERS | Rachel and Ben were incredibly lucky as Rachel’s sisters friend, Jo Sticklee, offered to do their flower arranging. She did the most marvellous job and captured the look Rachel and Ben were looking for perfectly. With a huge order of 11 wild flower bouquets, 4 sprigs of gyspophila, 10 rose buttonholes and flowers to decorate the church and venue she did an exceptional job. She used a mixture of rustic/cottage garden flowers in berry tones with a little pastel. She used bright green and delicate foliage to accompany the flowers. The bouquets were bound in hessian and lace and doubled up as table centre pieces during the wedding breakfast.  She grew some of the flowers herself and endeavoured to find as many local providers as she could for the others.

THE CAKE | I have a very talented bridesmaid who is a creative baker and made the most delicious and beautiful wedding cake! She did herself very proud and put on a brilliant display. It was also great how willing and excited she was to make it. It was a 3 tiered ‘naked’ Victoria sponge cake with fruit decoratively falling down its sides. It had a heart shaped shortbread at the top iced with ‘Mr and Mrs West’. It was fabulous.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographer is a super chap called Colin Ross. We can’t recommend him enough, he is brilliant at his job. He is fun, laid back, emotionally intelligent, professional and takes perfect photos. Colin just gets you and your wedding!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We took a DIY approach to the details and décor. The two women of the families got together to make gorgeous berry bunting which decorated both the church and the venue. We decorated hundreds of jam jars that friends had been collecting for months with hessian, lace and pretty fabric. We used hessian to make more rustic bunting and table runners. Rachel’s friends had lots of fun painting gorgeous signs of all different shapes and sizes and they made gorgeously bright tissue paper pom-poms. It was all a lot of fun!

THE HONEYMOON | Ben and Rachel went adventuring in the South of France. We found our accommodation on AirBnB situated perfectly in a village called Laurens between mountains and the Mediterranean coast. We had a whale of a time doing the activities some of our guests had bought us for our wedding present. We went canoying, jetskiing, high-roping, wine tasting, canoeing down rapids and hired our own boat on a picturesque lake.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | For Ben: My best moment was seeing Rachel come down the aisle.

For Rachel: It’s funny because when people ask me for my favourite moments, I basically reel of the entire day without meaning to. It is definitely true what they say – it most certainly is the best of your life. But: car journey with Dad, seeing Ben at the end of the aisle (How exciting!!), singing our songs, saying our vows, the palava of getting a huge dress into a little car, speeches, sparklers, dancing through the night and eating a ‘Grandma’ pasty.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | People are so happy and willing to help – you are not alone! Rachel organised multiple days or weekends with friends where they did loads of crafts, had yummy dinners, went on walks and chatted about lots of ideas. It is such a great excuse to get together with friends to be excited and creative.

Double up your bouquets to be your table centre pieces.

Regularly have conversations with people about why you are getting married as well as the plans for the day itself.
