Magical Winter Wonderland Rustic Wedding

It may be almost Spring, but I know many of you will be busy planning your winter weddings. So this gorgeous celebration will be sure to fill you with ideas for seasonal cosy and festive weddings today.

Emily and Tim tied the knot on the 17th December 2016 at East Riddlesden Hall in Yorkshire. They envisioned a magical winter woodland wedding, a vision that was brought to life by the couple’s  amazing style and their talented wedding suppliers. They injected a little of Christmas into their day too, with Christmas trees, tree decoration favours and candy canes, so sweet. Talking of treats, don’t look at their ‘indulgence bar’ if you are feeling peckish… hello donuts!

The lighting was one of the elements which really caught my eye. Think romantic candlelight, festoon lights, fairy lights and edison lights, all creating the perfect romantic atmosphere. The couple and their wedding party looked stunning in their chosen attire and the fresh white and green florals really tied everything together.

Thanks so much to Hayley Baxter Photography for sharing these sensational shots with us.

THE PROPOSAL | 21/09/08. It was my 19th birthday, we went for a meal at Bibi’s in Leeds and after we had our starter Tim got down on one knee.

THE VISION | Our vision was to create a magical winter woodland wedding with a few Christmas bits throughout.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We gave ourselves 18 months to plan our wedding. We felt we needed plenty of time to save for it and also plenty of time to get it exactly how we envisioned it to be. We carefully worked out our finances for the next 18 months to make sure we had more than enough to cover the wedding and some left over for the inevitable over spend (Tim knows me so well). We didn’t want to be too traditional so were flexible with our ideas.

We used Pinterest to help share ideas between myself and Tim and get more of an idea of what we wanted. We also wanted to get hands on and do as much as we could because we thought it would be cheaper. It also allowed us to say we really did get involved to create our perfect wedding.

There were always several lists on the go regarding finances and what we needed to do and time scales to get it done.

One of the first things we did was to choose a venue and hire some caterers. We then started adding some of the bigger suppliers to ensure we got who we wanted and to ensure we knew exactly how much the big things would cost because there are always hidden costs.

BUDGET | Initial budget 15-20k. Actual cost 25k (not including honeymoon).

THE VENUE | The Barn at East Riddlesden Hall near Keighley (Bradford).

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I bought my dress from Northallerton Bridal Outlet along with my veil, my shoes were from Schuh, jewellery from Warren James and my clip from eBay.

FINDING THE DRESS | The dress I bought was the first dress I saw and tried on and also in the first shop I went to. I knew exactly what I was looking for and I was just lucky the style of dress I wanted was in the first shop I went in.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | This was ordered from Top Mark suit hire. Tim hired tweed suits to fit the theme and in his words ‘to keep him warm’.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had 3 readings during our ceremony:

‘What’s Micky without Minnie’, ‘Love isn’t always perfect’ and one that my bridesmaid wrote herself for us.

A fiddle player (Ross Tennant part of the band The Tenmours) played the music of ‘All of me’ by John Legend for myself and my bridesmaids to walk down the aisle.

Our first dance song was ‘Mean to me’ by Brett Elderidge.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I chose Christmas green for my 5 bridesmaids, saw the dresses I wanted on pinterest and then found them on eBay. Their shoes were from Dorothy Perkins and handbags were from New Look.

THE FLOWERS | I didn’t really have a huge preference on my own flowers, I trusted Lynne (Stem Designs) 100%, so left my bouquet with her and it was beautiful. I bought a little flower charm of my Grandma to go on my bouquet too. I chose gypsophila for my bridesmaids. We asked for wild flowers to fit with our theme.

THE CAKE | I found the cake we wanted on pinterest after searching for months for a cake we both liked, it took us a long time to find we one agreed on. We took a photo into several different cake shops for a quote with prices varying from £350-£750. In the end we chose to go with Personal Ice as they gave us the best price and they filled us with confidence that they would deliver. They were also local to the barn so it worked out really well. We had a fruit tier, lemon drizzle tier and a chocolate orange tier. We did previously order a cake from someone in Durham but ended up cancelling this order due to changing our mind on the cake and also worried about the distance, which goes to show you should never rush a decision.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The amazing Hayley Baxter. Hayley was the first photographer we met and we clicked with her straight away. We did meet another photographer a few days after, she was great but Hayley had something about her we just loved. Tim and I both wanted our wedding to be captured very naturally and as Hayley says to tell a story perfectly from start to finish. Hayley was amazing in the run up to the wedding, on the day and with all the post wedding stuff. The photos arrived just before Christmas and we were so pleased with them!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Typical Type did our Love letters on the stage, the festoon lights outside and out 4 poster top table, Stem Designs with Simply Vintage did most of our décor including dressing the top table. We decided to go all out on the top table after seeing it at a wedding fayre and although it cost a lot we feel it really was a stand out feature and nicely divided the room for the evening do. Lynne and Rachel made the Barn look so magical with the flowers, lanterns, indulgence bar (filled with krispy krème doughnuts!) and the cake.

We also added a wall of shame with embarrassing pictures of all the guests sourced entirely from open source media such as Facebook so they couldn’t complain haha. We had 2 Christmas trees and filled the one on the inside with baubles from the Range, and the outside one with baubles and lights from our own tree at home. We added an order of the day on a framed chalkboard, which was beautifully done by one of my bridesmaids. The table plan was also something we were really pleased with as we made it ourselves after seeing a similar one on pinterest. We sourced the picture frames for it from TKmaxx, The Range, eBay, Next and a few other places and managed to get a free pallet from a local DIY store which we had to modify.

We had a wooden heart drop box frame and a date jar ideas with lollipop sticks for our guests to write date ideas on. We hand stamped our wedding favours with our guests names, a wedding related picture stamp, date of our wedding and a ‘Thank you’ stamp. These were small wooden log slices and we attached green ribbon so they became tree decorations for our guests to use each Christmas.

As mine and Tim’s grandparents have all passed on so couldn’t be there we wanted to still include them in our day but subtly. We put photo frames on the window sills with jars of flowers and candles round them. We also put an Air Ambulance donation jar on the bar asking for donations in their memory.

We focused a lot on the little details, they’re not always essential but we did feel they made a big difference to our day and we noticed by our guests.

THE HONEYMOON | We chose to go to Mexico for our honeymoon for 2 weeks and stayed at the Excellence Hotel in Riviara Maya. It was everything we wanted it to be and more.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Swimming with dolphins, giant sea turtles and swimming in a cenote and visiting Xel Ha water park.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Have a vision and a theme before planning and really structure your planning. Do plenty of research before making any purchases. Make a list and tick things off as you go along. Use sites like eBay, Etsy and Facebook groups. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve everything we achieved without them. I spent hours researching everything even for something as small as just cake boxes just to get a good price. The little things do add up so make sure they’re added into your budget. Enjoy your planning as you will it when its you’ve had your special day.
