Magical Outdoor Garden Festival Wedding

Sure it can be a risk to host the whole of your wedding outdoors, especially in the UK. But that’s what this lovely couple did and boy oh boy did the risk pay off.

George and Sabrina chose to get married on Saturday 23rd July 2016 in George’s Grandparent’s home in Essex. The gardens were just so beautiful and it worked so well to create three areas for different parts of their celebrations. Talking of threes, Sabrina had three beautiful gowns to wear. The first, her Mother-In-Law’s vintage wedding dress, then a traditional cheong-sam for the Chinese Tea Ceremony and finally Stargaze by Jenny Peckham for dancing the night away. She looked sensational. George opted for a blue Hugo Boss suit and quirky tie for a really stylish look.

I so love the colourful blooms and the tables laden with bottles and flowers. They made such an impact, as did the festoon lights draped in the trees above the seating area. WOW.

Thanks so much to Real Simple Photography for sharing these fantastic images today.

THE PROPOSAL | We met 8 years ago while working in Hong Kong and discovered not only that we were both from Essex but our parents lived 15 minutes away from each other! We’re both very laid back and knew we’d be together forever so the proposal was more of a mutual agreement, than a romantic love story.

THE VISION | A celebratory garden party with all our loved ones. It’s been described as a festival wedding since – I think this is due to the relaxed atmosphere and food trucks.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We always knew that if we got married we wanted to do it in George’s grandparents garden, it has special meaning to George and is a beautiful home which I love to visit. It also gave us creative freedom and flexibility to make our vision come alive. I have worked as an Event Manager for over 8 years and my mother-in-law is a very creative florist so we hit the ground running from the get go.

THE VENUE | George’s Grandparents home, Fobbing, Essex.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I wore 3 dresses. My wedding dress is my most precious item – it was my mother-in-law’s old wedding dress which she wore when she got married in the 80s, at that time she found it in a vintage shop and customised it to her style. 30 years later she handed it down to me and allowed me to fully customise it to my taste. My incredibly talented friend, Philippa Barnett, re-designed the dress for me, updating the style and adding accessories to the dress. Finally, my mother (who used to be a seamstress) painstakingly hand stitched the dress for me to wear. My veil was my mother’s which she wore on her wedding day and the pearl necklace a wedding gift from her.

My second outfit was a modern version of the traditional cheong-sam, a 2 piece red lace and satin outfit which I wore during our Chinese Tea Ceremony.

My final dress was Stargaze by Jenny Peckham for the evening party.

FINDING THE DRESS | I fell in love with Vicki’s (my mother-in-law) dress when I saw it, the fabric was divine, it just needed updating.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Hugo Boss 3 piece suit, white shirt and shoes from Marks & Spencer’s.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Reading 1 – The owl and the pussycat by Edward Lear. Reading 2 – Marriage by Anon.

Band – The 12th Street Swingers.

DJ – Anthony Saunders.

Background playlist – George Vincent on spotify.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | 6 beautiful bridesmaids, I let them choose their own dresses with a colour code of blush/nude – they all brought their own individual style, some were bought from ASOS and one from a vintage shop. I loved the individuality of the bridesmaids and the subtle tonal differences in their dresses. They were tied together with green and white floral head wreaths and a giant white flower.

THE FLOWERS | By my creative and visionary mother-in-law, Vicki Hatton-Vincent.

THE CAKE | Design and made by my incredibly talented best friend, Kelly, and her sister, Ashleigh (who has her own business). Above and beyond what I expected, she nailed it.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The amazingly talented Jacques Lloyd and his wife Nat from Real Simple Photography. They completely understood what we were trying to achieve and made our day so special, the photos capture everything.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | The garden is beautiful in itself so we went with a back garden/festival theme. As George’s grandparents have lived there for years the house/garden already had loads of character. The garden was split into 3 areas;

The back garden – here we held the ceremony, food trucks, main bar and dance floor. We hung festoon lighting and white lanterns along the treeline at the back where we had the ceremony with a wooden alter dressed in green and white. This area was then changed to long table and chairs for the evening meal, tables simply dressed with old wine bottles and flowers. We built 2 wooden food stalls and had 2 trucks pull into the back garden which served as the evening meal for the guests. The existing shed was then converted into the bar for the evening.

The Pool area – here we had afternoon tea for guests after the ceremony and had a quirky “Alice in Wonderland” theme with bright lanterns, pink flamencos and colourful bunting and flowers. The coffee and Espresso Martinis were stationed here along with the band and speeches on stage.

The Front Lawn – this overlooks the beautiful countryside and we placed large tables and chairs as an area for guests to relax in. We also held our Chinese Tea Ceremony here and dressed an area in red with “double happiness” signs.

We had beer barrows, buckets of wine and prosecco and a rehydration station for guests to help themselves.

With a background in Graphic Design I was able to create the invitations and design of the wedding stationery with the help of another talented friend, Kirsten Kelly, who is a floral pattern designer.

THE HONEYMOON | Yet to go….

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Our first dance – we always said we didn’t want to do one but our DJ insisted we have one in our locker (and only chose our song the night before – Bill Withers, Lean on me). As awkward as it was for me and George it was also the most memorable moment – once the chorus kicked in everyone started singing at the top of their voices and danced along with us.

The espresso martinis were another highlight and went down a treat with our guests. The Grind (London based coffee house) were amazing at making the perfect cocktails – it definitely lifted the atmosphere.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Try not to stress over little things – if you plan something for your wedding but it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t matter – your guests were none the wiser. Also, if you’re having a full DIY wedding, get a day planner – the last thing you want is to organise on your day.
