Love sure is super sweet isn’t it?! Well today’s couple certainly thought so.
WWW readers Julie and Mark held their Autumnal wedding outdoors at Harvest Moon, East Lothian, Scotland. Set on the beach, they had an intimate legal humanist ceremony, which was so very romantic.
They took only their children and parents with them for their wedding which kept their wedding personal and intimate. Julie wore a gorgeous Ian Stuart dress with Vivienne Westwood and pretty floral garland, while Mark went for a tweed suit from Asos.
They had some lovely details, including the fab “Love is Sweet” bunting, pine cone bouquet and “Here comes the Bride” sign. Perfect.
Thanks so much to the brilliant Matt Bowen Photography for sharing his images with us today.
The Proposal…. We went to school together but met up again a number of years later. On our first proper date we both said we knew we were going to get married and have babies which seemed really funny and not at all strange at the time, but to most people probably sounds slightly crazy! Mark actually surprised me with a ring on Christmas morning 2010 when I was approx 12 weeks pregnant with Dylan. I was really suffering with morning sickness and had never looked, or felt so rough in my life. Bless him, he told me he’d never loved me more, which obviously made me cry lots!
The Vision for the day…. Very rustic, DIY, relaxed, shabby chic, countryfied romantic! Lots of candles, tea cups, cake stands and pine cones.
The Planning process…. After canceling 2 venues in Cheshire as they just weren’t “us” we finally stumbled across Harvest Moon on the internet. It was perfect and everything we had been looking for. We could have a legal humanist ceremony (as it was in Scotland), say all our own vows and do it outside. It was everything we had ever dreamed of but couldn’t find any where in this country that it was possible. After deciding the big wedding was everything we didn’t want, planning was a breeze. We only took our 3 children and my parents with us (and Matt our fabulous photographer!) I got lots of inspiration from various blogs (including WWW!) and kept a scrapbook of all my ideas. We both knew that we wanted a very home-made, DIY day.
The Venue… Harvest Moon Holidays, Tyninghame Beach, East Lothian, Scotland
The Dress + Accessories…. My dress was Bow Belles from Ian Stuart’s Revolution Rocks! collection in Papyrus and metallic lace. It has a peaked sweetheart neckline encrusted with Swarovski crystals and an A line skirt which draps at the hip showing off a beautiful hand beaded lace panel, and of course there is THAT bow! I loved the fact is wasn’t white or ivory and knew it was “The One” even before I tried it on. My shoes were Vivienne Westwood Lady Dragon Heart in pearl. I thought they were so sweet and they smelt like jelly bean shoes! I also had a pair of baby blue Hunter wellies for the beach. My hair garland was made by the wonderful Romany at Blooming Loopy. This woman is a genius and I love her! Mark bought me a beautiful platinum bractlet to wear too, something else that made me cry!
Finding the dress…. I spent hours looking at dresses on the internet. As soon as I saw Bow Belles I knew it was meant to be. I was really lucky and found a stockist who was selling off all their Ian Stuart dresses for half price. I was so happy when I finally got to try my dream dress on.
Groom’s attire… Mark wanted something quite “Country Gent” and brown. It took forever for us to find something that was perfect. In the end he went for a funky tweed suit from ASOS, shirt, tie and shoes from Next and Hunter wellies for the beach. I though he looked super gorgeous.
The Readings + Music…. We’re both huge Beatles fans so we had “Here Comes The Sun” for brides entrance and “I feel Fine” for the exit. Our little girl and Chief Bridesmaid Jessie read “The House At Pooh Corner” by AA Milne and Sam (our eldest and Best Man) read “The Velveteen Rabbit” by Margery Williams. They were both fab
My sister, Alison, lives in Australia and send a prerecord reading for us, it was Untitled by Bee Rawlinson, which made us all laugh and cry in equal measures!
Beautiful bridesmaids….. Our gorgeous daughter Jessie was our only bridesmaid. She wore a dusky pink dress and cardigan from Monsoon, pink pumps from Next and pink Hunter wellies when we went down to the beach. She also had a beautiful hair garland by Romany again at Blooming Loopy
The Flowers… I’ve always had a thing for pine cones and know I wanted a pine cone bouquet right from the very beginning. My mum and dad collected hundreds for us and I painstakingly varnished every one of them. Mark made my bouquet for me, after I explained what I wanted, and he also made the button holes (he is quite amazing really!) The whites roses were provided by Michele and Petra at Harvest Moon which was such a wonderful and thoughtful surprise.
The Cake… Mark made a heart shaped fruit cake and ginger bread and we bought the other treats from Bunneys in Berwick Upon Tweed.
Your Photographer…. We looked at lots of photographers on the internet but keep coming back to Matt Bowen. His photos stood out and were that little bit different. We wanted a very relaxed approach and that was just what Matt was offering. He listened to us and captured the most amazing memories of our special day. As we had such a small wedding, Matt joined us for our evening meal and soppy as it sounds, he’s much more than a photographer now, he’s also our friend.
The Details + Decor…. We trawled various antique shops and fairs looking for vintage china and cake stands and took it all with us in the car! We had so much fun and acquired quite a collection. Our floral bunting was from eBay as was the heart shaped Beatles lyrics table confetti. The “Love Is Sweet” and “Mr and Mrs Egerton” bunting is from Folksy. The “Here Comes The Bride” wooden heart was made by a lovely lady in America, I found it on Etsy.
The Honeymoon…. We were supposed to be going to Paris for New Year but got the sickness bug the day before! We managed to change our flights until the summer and spent a wonderful couple of days in the Lake District to make up for it.
Memorable moments… All of it but saying the vows we had written, on a stunning beach, was very special.
Advice for other couples… Enjoy every minute, it goes so fast. Don’t stress if everything doesn’t go to plan, just go with the flow and have the best time ever. Remember it’s your day, no one elses, make sure you do everything you want, not what other people expect you to do :)
