Oh Scotland how I long to visit you.
Let me whisk you away this afternoon to the Isle of Skye for Natalie and Ross’ beautiful elopement which was held on the 17th March 2015.
Living in Houston in the US they wanted to create a magical and intimate wedding day for themselves. So they headed to the Dunscaith Castle ruins, which is amongst the most spectacular scenery.

THE PROPOSAL | The proposal happened at our apartment in Houston, TX. It happened after we had already started planning our elopement so we were practically engaged already, we just needed the ring. Ross made a makeshift tent, surrounded by rose petals, champagne, and my favourite thing, cookies!
THE VISION | Our vision was to make our wedding as intimate and magical as possible. We wanted our wedding to be something special that was shared just between the two of us because to Ross and I that’s all that really mattered.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | The planning process was extremely different for us since we had to worry about getting a marriage visa and the different laws regarding weddings in the UK. Other than the legal parts everything else was very simple. We contacted a celebrant, Sonja, and a photographer, Lynne, and kept in touch for about three months and then the special day came.
BUDGET | We didn’t really have a budget since it was an elopement. Besides the dress, all we really worried about was travelling and accommodations.
THE VENUE | We got married at the ruins of Dunscaith Castle, Isle of Skye, Scotland.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress, feather wrap, and pearl headband, were all from Anthropologie’s wedding brand BHLDN. For my jewellery I wore simple pearl earrings and a small dainty gold chain with a single pearl, which both were from my mother.
FINDING THE DRESS | I had to find the dress within the week that we told everyone the exciting news about our elopement. At the same time, it also had to be “off the rack” since we only had 3 months and couldn’t do any special orders. I took my mother, grandmother, and my soon to be mother in law, dress shopping, which was also the first time they met. It was such an amazing day especially since I was surrounded by so much love and support. Thankfully, I found my dress and accessories the first day and at the first store, so things didn’t get too stressful!
GROOM’S ATTIRE | The vest, jacket, and pants were all from Zara. His boots were Aston Grey, which we got from DSW.
THE FLOWERS | My mom made me a home made bouquet from her old wedding garter. The flowers were a mix of white hydrangeas and pink peonies with the handle of the bouquet covered in pearls.
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographer was Lynne Kennedy. Lynne, was the best choice for us because she has this vibrant warm personality where you instantly feel so comfortable around and the 5 hours of photos just seemed to fly by in her company.
THE HONEYMOON | For our honeymoon we spent two nights in London and 5 nights in Paris.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Some of our most memorable moments would first be when we walked up to the ruins and just how breathtaking they were. Second, Ross and I forgot the wedding bands in the car, and the ruins are about a good 10-15min walk from the car, so it was all in good fun but Ross had to go back and pick them up. Lastly, another memorable moment would be the scenery that surrounded us throughout our entire wedding. We don’t have a lot of hills and mountains in Houston, Texas, so everything was just incredibly stunning and gorgeous and we felt so lucky to be able to have our wedding in such a magical location.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Make it an adventure and one to remember and also know that a wedding is a special bond created between the two of you, so don’t feel bad if you want something a certain way ;)
