Being in the wedding industry themselves, today’s couple knew exactly the type of celebration they wanted to create. Boy oh boy was it amazing and it sure was a sight to behold too.
Helen and Henry were married on the 15th April 2017 on a beautiful Spring day and held their reception at home. Henry owns Your Marquee Ltd and the couple chose to hold their wedding party at the headquarters in Yorkshire. Of course they used the most beautiful marquee, which they set upon decorating in an industrial vibe with filament light bulb festoon lighting, vintage wooden ladders and a whole abundance of greenery. Trust me when I say you’re going to be blown away when you see it all.
Helen carried a foliage laden bouquet of ferns, eucalyptus and astilbe, which really suited her structured and figure hugging elegant gown just perfectly. Her bridesmaids wore darling navy dresses and the boys went for a country tweed and bow tie look in keeping with the style of the day. Enjoy all of these wondrous images provided by Stott and Atkinson guys, thanks so much Tim and Paul.
THE PROPOSAL | 27th March 2016 – We were walking our dogs in the field on our farm when I saw what looked like litter in the hedge. I went ballistic as it was a burst balloon that I thought had flown over from a local wedding venue (the irony) and stated that I would be writing them a letter! It had a package attached, which Henry pulled out of the hedge and passed to me. At this point, the ‘problem’ was now intriguing and I opened the package to discover a car reg plate?! It read ‘RC12 SON’ (Richardson) and when I looked over to Henry in a state of confusion, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! The plate is now a fixture on a lovely car that Henry bought for me and we used as our wedding car….
THE VISION | Home-wedding with a spectacular marquee (as this is Henry’s business). Industrial interior.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | We were lucky in that we already work in the wedding industry and have loads of contacts that we could call upon. This meant that we had a clear idea of which suppliers we wanted for what – all because we held our wedding prior to the main wedding season of course! Henry designed the marquee and bought some specialised pieces for our marquee, which are now being enjoyed by many of our own brides. I concentrated on the interior detail and wanted this to be key.
THE VENUE | Your Marquee Ltd Headquarters (where Henry’s business is based), Glebe Barn, Flaxton, York, YO60 7RT. Henry grew up in Flaxton, whilst I grew up in the next village, Claxton, and so this was the obvious choice for us. We wanted to the freedom of designing our own wedding and have the option to party as late as we liked without any limitations!
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | A dear friend who designed my pageant dresses when I was Miss York and in Miss England turned a horrible gown that I had purchased (for the material) into a stunning figure-hugging wedding dress of my dreams! I knew that Sarah at Thimbelina would know what I was trying to achieve and she did this with ease, counselling me along the way! I also had Kaye, from Badley’s Jewellers, York, who supplied me with the most beautiful engagement ring on earth who leant me her very own diamond earrings and bracelet (I can’t even mention the price as they were so, so unbelievably precious!!). Her generosity, warmth and friendliness went more than a million diamonds – they gave us lasting moments. My auntie and I shared a special moment in Kaye’s shop when I gave her her wedding gift, a memory which I will treasure forever. It must be said that my hair was certainly a talked-about accessory, courtesy of Gill at The Park, Hovingham, who did a fab job of creating a Bridget-Bardot style ‘big hair’. This is exactly as I had wanted and many were impressed that it had held for so long. My bridesmaid had joked that she couldn’t find her phone charger and that it could, in fact, be lost in my hair somewhere!
FINDING THE DRESS | This took approximately ten trips to different dress shops, factories and outlets but in the end, I visited an outlet shop in Northallerton where I found something that I knew that Sarah could work with.
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Harrogate Suit Hire – Richard (owner) is an absolute delight and we were sold as soon as we visited a wedding fair and saw his tweed bow-tie outfit on display. It was the first time that he had had it out and we were hooked the minute we saw it! No morning suits for us, we wanted a celebration and the outfits reflected a modern and fun personality which our guests loved.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | We opted for Corinthian’s ‘Love Actually’ as our Bible reading, read by a dear friend and colleague, Mike Thunder. Our second choice was ‘The Future’ written by Emma Salmon (Leeds – so a good Yorkshire lass!). Her description about the family-life with ‘two pairs of wellies at the door’ described Henry and I exactly! There was an ‘electric’ atmosphere in the Church (as my dad described) both on the day of the wedding and at the rehearsal and when my bridesmaid, Helen Dunmore, read this, we all had a good blub! We heard this reading out our friend’s, Lucy and Raife’s, wedding and thought that it was something rather special. Our entrance music was ‘Calvin Harris, Feel so Close’ which was also our first song, provided by Clubclass who were our DJ’s for the evening. We have used Clubclass before and know that they are best around so felt confident that they would make our evening a blast! They spoilt us with special smoke, explosive confetti, mics for the speeches and epic DJ’s on the night. We also had HUGE play who were the reason that many of our guests attended! Local villagers heard that they were featuring and some literally begged us to come and watch them play, which we found a fantastic complement.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Emma and Helen. They were fabulous from start to finish, organising a cracking hen-do in Edinburgh and seeing it through to helping me with my jewellery on the day.
THE FLOWERS | Allie at Wild Floral Couture.
THE CAKE | Henry’s mum, Heather Richardson, and her good friend made the cake. Although initially unsure about our choice of a ‘naked cake’, they did a fab job at providing what we asked for – good old Victoria sponge with plenty of butter cream stacked layer upon layer without any fuss! This matched our rustic-vibe and tasted delicious! Our good friends Jenny and Eddie at the Curious Table supplied us with brownies for the petit fours which are our favourite and made the day even more personal. Henry and I visited the marquee early the next day to hunt for leftovers and were disappointed (but not shocked!) that they had disappeared!
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Stott and Atkinson were our choice after our supplier was booked on that date. We are so thankful for their recommendation as their style is exactly what we loved – quirky, modern, cool. We wanted photographs stood in front of our roller shutter doors and of our dogs in bow ties and they got the lot with a cherry on the top! As well as this, Tim, and Paul are incredibly cool guys themselves and are really lovely people. We felt at ease with them straight away and on the day they were helping with all sorts (teaching us how to put the button holes on!) as well as taking the shots. I remember glancing over at Paul during the ceremony as I was saying my vows as he was wedged into the tightest spot in the Church to get the photo that we wanted! Brill guys and we’re already planning to hire them again for any occasion possible.
Our videographer, Alex at Alex J Miller, worked seamlessly with Tim and Paul to capture every moment. We can’t wait to see the outcome of this and are so pleased that we opted for this ‘treat’ as you under-estimate how quickly the day goes by and it will be amazing to be able to watch this on repeat! Friends and family are already booking ’movie night’ in to watch it!
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Our good friends, Andrew and Michael, own a local garden centre where Henry worked when he was younger, Vertigrow. They were amazingly generous and allowed us to borrow their plants. We got stuck in and borrowed tonnes of different sized topiary trees, screen trees and box hedging. This really ‘made’ the interior and we are so grateful. Henry and our team made a bar out of pallets and steel which just looked fantastic, as well as providing a focus for our guests to socialise around. Our good friend, Tony, was about to burn all of his old ladders one day when Henry visited. Henry shouted ‘no!’ as Tony had stacked them up and we gave them a new home hanging all of our retro filament bulbs in the marquee. It was amazing to be able to re-use such important pieces donated by friends and makes for really special memories. Our good friend Peter McVeigh supplied us with beautiful filament light bulbs from his company, STATUS, and these were professionally installed by lighting professional, Kevin, at Camel Lighting who provided all of the vintage pieces to the bulbs, festoon lighting and the TV for our speeches! We can’t thank these people enough for their time in making the marquee look exactly like our vision. Henry and his team worked super-hard to deliver a very important marquee (not to mention the pressure upon them to ‘make it the best’) and dressed the floor with a grey carpet to complement the wooden bar and pallet table plan. Our dance floor was rather large and also featured marquee-lights reading ‘LOVE’, provided by Clubclass, which matched perfectly with our industrial theme.
THE HONEYMOON | Sheraton Salobre, Gran Canaria was our mini-moon and our wonderfully generous guests gifted us money towards our ‘once in a lifetime’ trip, which we plan to take this Christmas. The mini-moon was a delight.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | There are definitely too many to mention but the speeches definitely did us proud, with Henry informing everybody about the ventures that we have been through together, such as accidentally pulling our dog’s nipple off as we mistook it for a tick; Henry’s best man boasting about their mischief at St. Peter’s school together and my dad creating an incredible rhyming-poem about my life to share with all. It was the perfect mix of an emotional roller-coaster and again, the atmosphere was unreal.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Leave yourself plenty of time and don’t worry about the small things. They will not make a scrap of difference on the day if you have true friends and family with you to witness and celebrate your occasion.
