Industrial Cool Greenery Filled Playful Mill Wedding

Happy new year! 2017 couples, you can now officially declare that you are tying the knot this year. Ekk. The countdown is on. I hope you all had a really fun NYE, we kept it pretty chilled, going for an early dinner with the boys at our fave restaurant before relaxing at home in front of the fire. Perfect. To start the year with a great big bang, I have a super cool industrial feel wedding filled with greenery.

WWW readers Laura and Ian chose to get married on the 18th August 2016 at The West Mill in Derbyshire. They fell for the space as soon as they set foot inside thanks to it’s unique features, it made the perfect blank canvas for their white and green colour palette. They filled the venue with giant balloons and ample amounts of foliage on the tables. Stylish botanical stationery was selected too and it worked beautifully with the festoon lights and polariod table names.

Laura looked effortlessly gorgeous in bridal separates, which were made bespoke for her, I love her bridal look complete with fresh floral crown. Ian and his boys looked sharp in a grey suit and black ties and braces respectively, while the bridesmaids donned long nude frocks.

Thanks so much to Becky Ryan for sending over these incredible images.

THE PROPOSAL | Ian proposed in Dubrovnik in Croatia. After taking me on a surprise boat trip to watch the sunset, (it was actually a pirate ship, perfect for us as we’re both big kids!), we went looking for a bar to have drinks. Ian was insistent we needed to find one that wasn’t busy (quite a tall order in Dubrovnik in summer!) we walked for about half an hour and came across a rocky area of the beach. Ian wanted to climb the rocks and then told me he had a surprise, it was quite impressive of him to get down on 1 knee in the middle of rocks!

THE VISION | Ian and I wanted something unique but informal and relaxed that also reflected our love of all things fun. We’re both completely overgrown children and wanted to reflect that too.

THE VENUE | The West Mill, Derbyshire. We had looked at a number of venues and originally wanted either an outdoor wedding or a barn. After looking at a number of barns they all blended into one another and we vetoed the outdoor idea after attending a very wet wedding, we found The West Mill. We had never seen anything like it, it was unique, beautiful and relaxed and we loved all the original features. We fell in love immediately and booked it the next week.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Bespoke separates with a Pronovias skirt over the top from Nobel and Wright, Queens Road, Leicestershire, floral crown made by Mrs Umbles, our florist, Tiffany’s pearl earrings bought by Ian as a wedding present and my grandmas ring worn on a chair under my dress. The shoes were Rachel Simpson ‘Naomi’ shoes.

FINDING THE DRESS | I had a very set idea in my head of what I wanted my dress to be and after being told by a number of stockists that they ‘didn’t do that kind of thing’ I came across Nobel and Wright. Hannah let me try a number of her dresses and then announced that we could design it ourselves! She got my idea perfectly of a separate top and skirt and we chose the skirt from a new selection of Pronovias skirts she had in stock, it had a gorgeous train and was made from the most beautiful silk organza. We then designed the short under layer that showed off my shoes and Hannah created a beautiful lace cropped top. Hannah was so much fun to work with and such a perfectionist that every little detail was just perfect. I really did not want to take my dress off!

GROOM’S ATTIRE | We decided very early on that if I was to get a dress that Ian needed a suit that he could keep and neither of us were big fans of tails. Ian adores Reiss suits and after very little shopping he found one he loved. He was even more sold when they told him it was based on one of James Bond’s suits!

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Sam Carter, a long time friend of Ian’s chose a reading of her own, we thought it was perfect for our day. We had a pianist play throughout the ceremony and welcome drinks and I walked down the aisle to ‘A Thousand Years’, a song that reminds us of each other. For our evening we had always said we wanted a live band and that came in the form of The FuFu Sailors, an amazing band that Ian knew and came recommended by a friend who had them at her wedding.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had 4 bridesmaids, Josie Danvers who has been my closest friend for 15 years, Claire Ferguson and Marina Boor whom I have also been friends with since school and Stephanie Shipley, my friend since college. Steff’s daughter Emily was my flower girl. We had a nightmare finding dresses to suit them all but finally found the perfect one from Miss Selfridge.

THE FLOWERS | Mrs Umbles (Sarah) was our wonderful florist. She came recommended to me by a work friend who had used her for her wedding and from our initial meeting I know that there could be nobody more perfect. We wanted neutral colours, relaxed and no roses and runners to go down the middle of our tables. I also wanted a floral crown. Sarah from day one was a delight to work with and nothing was too much hassle. We were amazed when we saw the finished product, they were more beautiful than we could have imagined. I didn’t want to take the crown off and wore it for breakfast the next morning!

THE CAKE | The cake came from Helen Alborn, a local cake maker who was recommended by Steff and after our cake tasting we were sold, they were amazing! We chose a 3 tier semi naked cake which our florist decorated with fresh flowers. The tiers were all different, Carrot Cake (Ian’s favourite), Lemon Cake, (My favourite) and a Vanilla Cake.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | After many hours of searching we came across Becky Ryan. We wanted something informal, relaxed and not too staged and Becky was all of those things, most of the day we didn’t even realise she was there! She was so lovely to work with and put us at ease during our staged shots by getting us to play silly games, we loved it. We were absolutely delighted with the pictures, she captured so many natural smiles and moments that we didn’t even realise had happened.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | The venue was so beautiful that we didn’t have to do too much to make it look wonderful. We had 2 large balloons from Dotty and Love balloons at the end of the aisle, flowers dotted all over the place by Mrs Umbles and floral table runners at dinner. The favours were Jelly Belly Beans (our favourite) and we played a game of pass the parcel before dinner, awarding the winners with sweeties and a Jagerbomb! The table names were places that Ian and I had visited and loved and we had a polaroid of each place to represent that. Our stationery was made by the very talented Aimee Shellard, an old primary school friend who got in touch when she found out I was engaged. She made little tags for each name place and the wonderful table plan. Ian’s mother Mary set up a photo booth for us with a polaroid camera, I didn’t know she owned so many weird and wonderful props! Outside we had garden games to entertain our guests and at the end of the night we had a vintage ice cream truck (we love ice cream). Our band played until our feet were sore from so much dancing!

THE HONEYMOON | We spent our ‘mini-moon’ in Bali, such a beautiful place with amazing people and full of culture. Our very generous guest contributed towards our honeymoon fund which has helped pay for our 3 week trip to America’s west coast next year.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | There’s too many to list! From the (surprise) emotion in Ian’s eyes when I walked down the aisle, to the excitement of guests during pass the parcel and some memorable dancing, the whole day was amazing from start to finish and we have so many memories to cherish.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | You only get to do this once so make sure it’s what you want. Ian and I made sure that our wedding day was everything that we loved and if our guests loved it too then that made us even happier. Don’t stress too much about the tiny details, you won’t even notice them on the day. And finally, savour every moment, everybody will tell you how quickly it goes and it really does, we just wish we could do the day again.
