Mint is my go to colour at the moment, anything mint and I am lusting over it. So when I saw Chris and Olivia’s pink, mint and glitter gold colour scheme I was just smitten.
WWW readers Olivia and Chris chose the 11th July 2015 to exchange their vows in a humanist garden ceremony before portraits on the beach and a reception at Macdonald Marine Hotel in North Berwick. The weekends spent covered in glitter totally paid off as the DIY décor was a masterpiece. I adore the fluffy peonies wrapped up in ribbon, stylish paper goods and that chevron cake. Amaze.
Olivia looked elegant in lace, the bridesmaids wore BHS dresses and the boys donned kilts. Perrrrfect.
Carley Buick Photography, thanks so very much for sharing your wonderful imagery with us this afternoon.
THE PROPOSAL | Chris whisked me away to a cute boutique hotel in Ayrshire just before Christmas. We had spent the day Christmas shopping so we were both in the spirit of the season. Little did I know there would be more than Christmas to celebrate! It turns out Chris had the proposal up his sleeve for a while. He had spent a lot of time planning the proposal from organising drinks and canapés on arrival at the hotel to a candlelit room filled with roses. He had also made a DVD filled with personal moments including holidays and where we met. The hotel staff were also aware of his plans as they had even made a personalised menu entitled ‘ The engagement of Olivia & Chris’ and also a cocktail. When we entered our room music was playing and when I turned round Chris was down on one knee with the Pandora engagement ring charm. I remember thinking what on earth are you doing… It is a very surreal moment one you only witness in movies until the real thing happens. The next day we spent probably what felt a lifetime to Chris choosing an engagement ring. All in all it was very romantic and to this day I am still shocked I never knew it was coming!!
THE VISION | We always wanted an outdoor wedding, near the seaside however given the unpredictable Scottish weather we needed somewhere that had the option to get married inside also. I also become addicted with pinterest and realised I did not want the traditional Cadbury purple Scottish wedding. We wanted lots of personal pretty details.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | We were pretty organised from the beginning. We booked the wedding venue in January 2014 and from there we just focussed on the details. We collected over 100 jam jars which we spray painted pink and gold, visited Hobbycraft far too many times for an array of wedding treats and glitter. Every Sunday me and a couple of friends would meet and create bits n bobs for the wedding – every time I would be covered head to toe in glitter!
We also knew from attending previous weddings we wanted a Humanist ceremony – something we could totally make our own.
BUDGET | 15k
THE VENUE | Macdonald Marine Hotel North Berwick. Big windows looking onto the beach and glorious outdoor space for photos.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Cosmabella part of the Demetrios Bridals – Simply Exquisite Edinburgh. Shoes – Dune. Jewellery – Pandora. Bridesmaids – Etsy.
FINDING THE DRESS | I visited numerous bridal shops, mainly because I enjoyed the whole experience – who can hate pretty dresses and of course the bubbly! I probably tried on about 20 dresses until I found the one. I liked parts of dresses but not the whole thing until I visited Simply Exquisite. I was the only bride in the shop so it felt personalised and the woman who helped knew what would and would not suit me. She gave me a handful of hearts to place on the hangers of the dresses I liked and let me wander. It was the 3rd dress I tried and I knew from there this was my wedding dress.
GROOM’S ATTIRE | We still wanted a cute Scottish feel so we had to have the groom and grooms party in kilts. We were able to get lovely grey kilts which would match the bridesmaids and also not limit the colour of flowers. We got all the kilts from Kapital Kilts in Linlithgow.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | The readings were difficult to pick as we wanted something meaningful but nothing too soppy. There are lists of readings online which are a great help and I would recommend to everyone to look at. We ended up choosing ‘The Wedding Singer’ song – you know the one Adam Sandler sings on the flight! It made everyone laugh! Music wise we had chosen a number of old songs from Stand By Me to upbeat songs from the Jersey boys. We are both suckers for movie songs so we had to include them during the ceremony. We also had fantastic band called No1 SUN at the evening reception – The dance floor was never empty.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | We had 3 bridesmaids, both of our sisters and also one of my best friends since I was little. I found lovely mint bridesmaid dresses from the BHS bridal collection which ended up looking fab with the flowers.
THE FLOWERS | A very talented friend of mine works in Narcissus Flower Shop and she knew exactly what I wanted. Big pink peonies – I could have cried when they arrived on the day of the wedding, they were beautiful.
THE CAKE | Cupcake Moments. Wilma was a true inspiration and created a master piece – exactly what we wanted and not one bit was left. 3 tiers of Chocolate, butter scotch and white chocolate and raspberry mmmmmmm.
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Carley Buick Photography. Carley was amazing. She knew the style of photos we wanted and never stopped the whole day clicking away with the camera. She was great fun getting everyone involved and captured every moment perfectly.
THE HONEYMOON | Singapore & Bali.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Do not worry about the guests enjoying themselves – everyone has a blast no matter what. Take time to yourselves throughout the day as it is over in a second.
