Fun & Games DIY Tipi Wedding

Morning WWWers, I hope you are ready for a real treat today. I have two utterly gorgeous real wedding features lined up and we are starting with this truly lovely home made affair. When I say home made, I mean home made. The flowers were home grown, the cake baked by the bride and the bridal party attire hand stitched. It’s a celebration which really warmed my heart.

WWW readers Hannah and Matt chose to get married on the 25th July 2015 at Sledmere House, Yorkshire, followed by a reception in Hannah’s family’s garden hosted in a majestic tipi by Papakata. They envisioned a fun and games filled day, complete with fete style outdoor games for guests and relaxed vibes. The DIY blooms were just so pretty and really brought the tipi to life, placed on the rustic long tables in jars.

I especially adore the groomsmens outfits, Hannah’s mum made the tweed waistcoats and the boys chose chinos and ties to suit. They looked really awesome all lined up together, too cool. The bridesmaids dresses were also home made in a wonderful rich blue fabric. Hannah chose a lace Essence of Australia gown named D1549, which flattered her figure perfectly.

Thanks so much to James & Lianne for sharing these stunning images.

THE PROPOSAL | Matt had taken me away for a surprise trip the weekend before Christmas but hadn’t proposed. I was a bit disappointed as we had been together nine years and was beginning to think it would never happen. On the way back home, we stopped off for a walk at Craster, Northumberland. Matt picked up his rucksack – there I was thinking it was going to be just a short stroll before lunch…. He said his waterproofs and thermals were in there. We set off on the walk, not made any better by strong winds and getting something stuck in my eye. I’ve got to admit, I wasn’t in the best of spirits! I took the shortcut to the beach over some rocks, Matt just behind me. He asked me to wait and when I turned around he was down on one knee with the ring in his hand. I was completely blown away (literally), burst into tears and said ‘yes’. He then produced a small bottle of champagne from the rucksack to help us celebrate.

THE VISION | A fun-filled home-made country garden wedding with a hint of Scotland. There had to be lots of delicious food, games and plenty of ceilidh dancing.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | After the proposal, we found out we were expecting a baby in the Autumn, so we chose a date for the following July and booked the ceremony venue and teepees. Hannah’s family have a large, well-established country garden and her mum was more than happy to hold the reception as we struggled to find a venue in the area that we loved. We also knew that holding the wedding in the garden would give us no restrictions on what we wanted to do.

We found our photographer on Google. James and Lianne were great from the start and we couldn’t have been happier with them on the day – we hardly knew they were there!

THE VENUE | We didn’t want a church wedding so we looked at several venues across East and North Yorkshire for a civil ceremony. Sledmere House was just perfect, and held up to 110 in the biggest ceremony room. It was also only a short distance from my parents’ house for planning and the reception.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress: Essense of Australia D1549. Accessories: Shoes from Jones the Bootmaker, hairpiece – homemade.

FINDING THE DRESS | I went dress shopping seven months before the wedding in York without a clue about what I wanted. I had given myself one day to find the dress with three appointments booked. The dress was the first one I tried on in the last shop and it was perfect.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | We wanted something different to mourning suits and that would match the more relaxed style of the wedding. We searched for suitable designs online but really struggled to find anything just right. In the end, we sourced some tweed and my mum made the waistcoats, doing a fabulous job. We left the male members of the bridal party to choose their own chinos and white shirts so they had the option of wearing them again. Mum made the ties to match the bridesmaids dresses.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | For the readings, we chose ‘He’s not perfect’ by Bob Marley and an excerpt from Winnie the Pooh by AA Milne.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Hannah’s mum made two of the bridesmaid dresses and two of the bridesmaids made their own. We had tried the high street and ordered a made to measure sample dress from abroad, but nothing was right.

THE FLOWERS | To reduce some of the cost, my mum offered to grow the flowers. This was decided soon after the engagement so she had a year to do a ‘trial run’ to see what would be in bloom on the day. The garden flowers were used in the bouquets and the arrangements and we were really pleased with them. We currently live in Scotland, so the thistles in the brides bouquet and the men’s pinholes were a little reminder of Scotland.

THE CAKE | The cake was home made by the bride and was iced the week before the wedding. The final decorations went on the afternoon before with two of my bridesmaids taking charge of each layer. Luckily it was a fairly simple design.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | James and Lianne were fabulous. We opted for an engagement shoot as both Matt and I are terrible in front of the camera. This turned out to be a great idea as on the day we could be really relaxed and not worry about the photographs.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Luckily, the teepees were a great backdrop and little decoration was needed. Bunting and fairy lights were borrowed from family and friends. Everyone we knew collected jam jars for the table flowers.

We were aware there was a long wait between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast so opted for afternoon tea instead of canapés to keep the guests going. We also organised a skittles alley, coconut shy, bat the rat, hook a duck, giant jenga, hoopla and a trampoline to keep the guests entertained – they were a great ice-breaker.

We supplied the drinks ourselves and mum had made some fairly potent rhubarb gin and gooseberry vodka, which went down a treat.

THE HONEYMOON | We couldn’t go far with a nine-month old baby so we had three nights in a cottage based near Helmsley, North Yorkshire.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The whole day was just perfect from start to finish. We loved every minute, although walking down the stairs after the ceremony at Sledmere House as Mr & Mrs was definitely one of the highlights.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | If some little things don’t get done, don’t worry. They probably didn’t need doing and the guests won’t have noticed anyway. Ask your caterers if they have a staff menu so you can feed the photographers, bar staff etc.
