Fun & Colourful Modern Music Inspired Wedding

I do so love a brightly coloured wedding and Laura and Matt’s has style and colour in spades. There are so many jewel tone details to feast your eyes on and couples looking to incorporate a musical theme into their day will love this beautiful example of how to do it so stylishly. The pair wanted a wedding which was laid back and truly reflective of them, and I don’t think think there’s any doubt that they achieved it.

Laura and Matt tied the knot on Saturday 25th February 2017 at Marldon Church followed by a fun-filled reception at The Kingston Estate. Their day was a riot of colour and there were plenty of musical influences, Laura even put together decor based on Coldplay’s Glastonbury backdrop! Isn’t the cake made by the couple’s friends absolutely out of this world too? Of course, each of the tables was named after a band or artist and a card with some of their lyrics decorated the table centre, such a sweet touch.

Laura plumped for show-stopping ‘Arianne’ by Ivory & Co and with Matt wanting to wear a three-piece suit, he found the perfect outfit in M&S. The two lovely bridesmaids wore different coloured dresses in a similar tone.

Thanks so much to Holly Collings Photography for providing these wonderful images.

THE PROPOSAL | It was a total surprise! Matt took me to Bath for the weekend and we spent a couple of days doing our favourite things – wandering, eating and drinking! We were at a National Trust property called Prior Park, taking in the view from their amazing Palladian Bridge, I turned around and he was down on one knee! The most perfect part was that there was absolutely no one else around! We were in this most spectacular setting, by ourselves. It was my version of perfect.

THE VISION | We knew it would be a big wedding from the off. We both wanted our day to be a celebration and a reflection of us – laid back and fun! We’re both into music and met whilst performing in a band together (he’s a drummer and I sing) so that was always going to play a part of the day too. Matt wanted to be involved so made decisions together and he helped make bits and bobs for the day.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We made decisions on the big stuff like venue, church and photographer pretty quickly and that was followed by catering. We were overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of friends and family offering to help with flowers, the awesome cake and other bits and bobs!

THE VENUE | As soon as we saw Kingston Estate, we knew it was the right place for our wedding. It’s a beautiful Georgian house just outside Totnes in Devon and it’s just stunning, even on a grey February day like ours! It’s out in the sticks, but still easy to get to and can sleep over 60 people in cottages within the grounds. The owners Jamie and Sarah did everything to make sure that our wedding day ran smoothly and was as beautiful as we’d hoped it would be!

Another benefit to using Kingston is that they have lots of options in terms of guest spaces. We could move the whole party from room to room without having to wait for spaces to be set up. The evening party was held in the Undercroft room which is this awesome basement with a vaulted ceiling. Perfect for dancing the night away!

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress was ‘Arianne’ by Ivory & Co and I bought it from Sam at Browns of Totnes. Beaded box clutch bag from Accessorize. Jewellery from Pandora, a gift from Matt a couple of years ago. Shoes were from Benjamin Adams and veil was handmade by De Voice at Browns of Totnes.

FINDING THE DRESS | Sam at Browns of Totnes was recommended to me by a mutual friend. What’s fantastic about her boutique is that it’s a sample shop. She travels here and there, sourcing the most beautiful range of sample dresses, meaning that what she has in her boutique is a really eclectic mix of stylish, traditional and classic designer gowns. It was the first and the last shop I visited! After trying on a bunch of dresses, I tried on one that Sam suggested. That was it. I imagined I’d go for something vintage and lace, but ended up up with an elegant but dramatic gown. When Sam buttoned it up, it made me stand taller and it felt as important as the occasion I was wearing it for. And it made me want to dance!

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Matt liked the idea of a blue 3 piece suit and we found some really smart ones from M&S that fit really well. The red tie was a nod to the other love of his life – Liverpool Football Club! I thought the polka dots just added a bit of fun and informality!

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Having a church wedding meant that we needed to have at least one bible based reading, so we went for the traditional ‘Love is’ from the book of Corinthians. But we did have it read from a modern version of the Bible, meaning that the language was more down-to-earth. The second was a reading by Matt’s goddaughter Zoe called Our wedding Day.

I walked in to the church to a piano version of ‘Sky Full Of Stars’ by Coldplay. We had two hymns and during the registry, two of Matt’s band mates took up their guitars and sang ‘I feel fine’ by the Beatles and ‘I’m a believer’ by the Monkees. We walked out of the church to Stevie Wonders ‘For Once In My Life’.

We had a band booked for the evening do but the lead singer had to cancel at the very last minute as his wife had gone into labour! Luckily, we have some super talented friends who stepped up and performed some songs for everyone! It just made the night more memorable.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | We had two of my best friends as bridesmaids and two flower girls. We spent ages looking for the right dresses and I just fell in love with the idea of having two completely different dresses, but in similar tones. It was another way to inject some fun and colour into the wedding and the girls looked just beautiful! Jade Isla did the make up for all of us on the day and she did an amazing job! The lilac dress was from Kelsey Rose and the Purple dress was from Monsoon.

THE FLOWERS | Like everything else about our wedding, the flowers were a mixed bunch! My amazing best friend and bridesmaid just happens to be a florist, so her company Aster Floral Design took care of the beautiful bouquets! She got it so right and the colours just pulled everything together! Blue Geranium supplied the buttonholes and my aunties Angela and Pauline put together a load of gorgeous arrangements for the church.

THE CAKE | Our truly amazing cake was a gift from our friends Sam & Polly. They made a 3 layer cake of coffee and hazelnut, lemon and gooey chocolate. It was covered in truffles and macarons and cupcakes! We saw it for the first time when we walked into our wedding breakfast and it blew us away!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | We met Holly Collings at a wedding fayre in Torbay and I loved her pictures as soon as I saw them. She was easy to talk to, understood what we were after and went out of her way on the day. The fact that she arrived early and left late on the day didn’t go unnoticed! Her style is very much on the candid side, rather than the stiff and formal. She captured moments throughout the day that expressed how happy and joyous it was! We can’t thank her enough and I would recommend Holly to any couple!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | After watching Coldplay perform at Glastonbury last year, I really wanted to produce a backdrop for our reception, inspired by theirs on the Pyramid stage! I couldn’t find anything similar available to buy (I even tried contacting their tour manager!), so we decided to have a go at making something similar. That involved cutting and folding hundreds of little flower pom poms and attaching them to fishing wire. It took ages but it was so worth it in the end!

I had a go at hand painting the ‘Welcome to our Wedding’ sign and was really pleased with how it looked. It’s amazing what you can do with a glue gun, some flowers and acrylic paints!

To keep the kids happy during dinner and the speeches, I put together some bespoke party bags with toys, masks, crayons and personalised colouring booklets.

Our favours were from the Cockington Chocolate Company who are local to us. They produced little chocolate bars with each guests name (or nickname) piped on the top.

Each table was named after one of our favourite bands and the centrepieces included a little card with a special lyric from one of their songs. We went a bit mad with tealights, but we’re lovers of candles so they were a must! We laid the place settings ourselves and the centrepieces, so it was a real labour of love.

THE HONEYMOON | We spent 4 days in Venice after the wedding. We lucked out with the weather so we spent most of the trip sitting outside in the sunshine drinking Aperol Spritz! Heaven.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Walking in and seeing Matt at the altar. I was so excited to marry my best friend! Entering the wedding breakfast as husband and wife! My dad’s speech was just beautiful. He reduced quite a few people to tears and I’ll never be more proud to be his daughter.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Be creative! It’s amazing what you can learn from a YouTube video or Pinterest tutorial, so have a go and make some things yourselves. You’ll save some money and get real satisfaction out of making the day your own.
