Exquisite Relaxed & Rustic Barn Wedding

Exquisite Relaxed Rustic Barn Wedding http://www.emiliemay.com/

I love how Jade and Rick involved their 2 year old son Noah into their wedding celebrations. As a mum of two little boys myself, it was also super important to me to include them both in our wedding. In fact I wrote about planning a wedding when you have children and if you are a wedding planning parent yourself, I’d recommend you take a gander. Little Noah got ready with his dad, walked back down the aisle as a family and he danced the night away, so sweet!

WWW readers Jade and Rick were wed on the 2nd June 2017 and set their heart upon Rivington Hall Barn in Lancashire for their wedding party. What a choice it was, high beamed vaulted ceiling dripping with fairy lights and all. They added rustic styling and gorgeous blooms to really make the space their own, they absolutely nailed it! I also have to say that the bridal party all looked so exquisite in their chosen attire. Jade’s Stella York gown was all dreamy lace and long train, Rick and the boys looked dapper in three piece suits and the bridesmaids wore navy frocks. Stunning.

I love the portraits here today by the wonderful Emilie May Photography, especially those at golden hour. Swoon. Thanks for sharing them with us Emilie.

THE PROPOSAL | Me and Rick met 6 years ago through a mutual friend. He proposed on the 1st June 2014 whilst on holiday in Lanzarote. Rick had been secretly planning the proposal for a while and somehow managed to sneak the ring into his hand luggage, through security at the airport and hid it inside his clothing for 4 days on holiday before he proposed. I was very impressed as literally had no idea! The proposal was on the beach at sunset and was absolutely perfect and completely unexpected. We waited until we got home to announce it to our family and friends.

THE VISION | To fit in with the venue the theme was rustic summer vintage! I wanted it to be pretty, relaxed, intimate and fun.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | It took 3 years on and off to plan, as we found out I was expecting 3 weeks after getting engaged so the wedding was pushed back from 2016 to 2017 so that our son Noah could be part of the day and enjoy it with us. We booked the venue quite early on in the process (as it gets booked really far in advance) and then the majority of other suppliers we booked a year to 6 months in advance, I was quite relaxed about the whole thing and didn’t want to book suppliers too far in advance and then change my mind. I had several Pinterest boards, which were great for inspiration. I also followed quite a few local suppliers on twitter to get more ideas. I did the majority of the planning and occasionally showed Rick a few pictures to see what he thought! I made the favours and stationery myself, which was time consuming but I really enjoyed it and luckily I managed to get pretty much everything done a few weeks before the wedding, which meant the week before was relatively stress free and relaxed.

Our son Noah (who is 2 and a half) was a massive part of our day. Noah was with Rick on the morning of the wedding and went to church with the rest of the groomsmen. He was extremely well behaved during the ceremony but decided he wanted to join us at the altar after we had exchanged vows and actually walked back down the aisle with us after we had been pronounced husband and wife, which was lovely. He sat at the top table throughout speeches and wedding breakfast and had a great time, he danced for hours in the evening and enjoyed helping himself to the evening buffet and left over favours!

BUDGET | £20,000 and luckily we came in just under it.

THE VENUE | Choosing the venue was easy, Rivington Hall Barn is a local venue, which we have visited many times previously for events and parties, as soon as we visited on their wedding open evening we put our name down and secured a date!

There is no other venue like it, and the two wedding planners Anna and Rachel were so helpful and patient answering my endless questions in the last couple of months

The ceremony was at our local church, Christ Church Heaton in Bolton. The Church is really special to us and is also where our son Noah was christened.

We really wanted to have a relaxed and fun day, and decided to forget about the small stuff and focus on the two things which are most important to us, good food and good music! The food at Rivington was amazing, having previously eaten there before we knew whatever we chose would be delicious. A particular guest highlight was the afternoon tea and fizz upon arrival, which everyone loved and I’m still getting comments on it now nearly 4 months later!

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | After a few months of searching and trying on a lot of dresses, I finally found my Stella York dress at Ava Rose Hamilton in Colne, the boutique is amazing, so many beautiful dresses and Denise had an endless amount of patience with me and made it such an enjoyable experience. The dress was absolutely stunning, with intricate back detail and a fabulous cathedral length lace train. After much debate, I decided to wear a single tier cathedral length silk tulle veil, which finished the look perfectly. I didn’t wear any other accessories in my hair as I wanted to keep the look simple.

My shoes were from Jenny Packham, which were an absolute bargain in the sale, having had my eye on them for 6 months prior! I wore Pandora earrings, which were given to me my by my sisters as my ‘something new’ I also wore a brooch inside my dress which belonged to my Nan who sadly passed away in July 2016.

Hair and makeup for all the bridal party was by Nala and Knot who were recommended by a mutual friend. Natalie and Laura really are the loveliest girls ever. I already knew what I wanted and they did an amazing job creating my look from pictures I had saved on my phone, they made the wedding morning really special and it wouldn’t have been the same without them.

FINDING THE DRESS | I started looking for a dress about 15 months before the wedding, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted, which made the process more stressful than I was anticipated and I ended up visiting quite a few shops and I must have tried on at least 20 (if not more) before I decided on ‘the one’, which I ordered in in May 2016.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | The men’s suits were all from Slaters Menswear in Manchester, with shirts from TM Lewin. Rick doesn’t wear a suit for work and lives in sportswear so didn’t really know what he wanted, after a few unsuccessful trips his groomsmen finally managed to help find something for him which fit the bill! Rick also wore shoes from Ted Baker. Our Son Noah who acted as page boy wore an outfit from Zara.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Since watching ‘Father of the Bride’ when I was a child I knew I wanted to walk down the aisle to ‘Canon in D’ by Pachelbel, which was played by the Church’s organist, and we left the church to ‘Crown Imperial’ by William Walton, which was chosen by my dad. We had two readings, my bridesmaid Maria did a bible reading and Rick’s sister Joanne read ‘Union’ by Robert Fulgham, I read a lot of readings before choosing this one and thought the words in this were really special.

We hired a local pianist, Ken Robson who played during the drinks reception and wedding breakfast. In the evening we had a brilliant Manchester based band called Twisted Tubes who regularly play at gigs across the City Centre, they are fabulous and if you haven’t already seen them play then you really should!

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had 4 bridesmaids, my two sisters who acted as joint maids of honour as the three of us are really close, and two good friends of mine, Maria and Jodie. I didn’t get the bridesmaid dresses until 3 months before the wedding and they ended up being an absolute bargain in the ASOS Sale. They all wore matching rose gold sandals, which were also from ASOS and silver stud earrings from Oliver Bonas, which were a gift from me. Our 3 month old niece Robyn acted as our flower girl who wore a lovely little dress from Next.
THE FLOWERS | I was introduced to Kerry and Wild Flowers in Standish, by our venue dresser Emma. I didn’t really know what I wanted other than something very rustic with lots of foliage and Kerry was great at our first meeting showing me lots of ideas and piecing together different flowers which would look good together. I absolutely loved my bouquet it was stunning! Kerry also decorated the church and created a lovely archway from foliage, which we also used on the top table at our reception.

THE CAKE | We always knew we wanted a naked cake covered in masses of fresh fruit to fit in with the rustic theme, I was introduced to Kerry Armstrong from The Jam Jar through a mutual friend, Kerry was amazing and the cake was absolutely delicious there was hardly a crumb left at the end of the night! Each tier was a different fruity flavour.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Emilie May Photography. Emilie is so lovely and was actually the second photographer I booked, I had booked one already and had been having second thoughts when I saw some photo’s Emilie had taken at another wedding at Rivington and loved her relaxed style. Emilie was brilliant on the day and let us dictate how much time we wanted to spend having pictures taken, and even came to the rescue with a much needed hair pin half way through the day!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | I decided quite early on in the planning process that I didn’t want the hassle of decorating the venue myself, after doing some research I came across Emma from Love and Lace, a wedding décor and prop styling business based in Lancashire. Upon my first meeting with Emma I knew I had made the right choice, she understood what we were looking for and did an amazing job, the venue looked more beautiful than we could’ve ever imagined. We were in constant contact over a year putting together ideas, which was really good fun. Emma created a Pinterest board, which we would both pin ideas to and then discuss but quite often we would pin the same things which really reassured me that Emma knew what look wanted to achieve.
I made all the menus, place settings and favours and a good friend of mine designed the ‘order of the day’ chalkboard.

THE HONEYMOON | We have been lucky enough to have two, straight after the wedding we headed to Spain with Noah for a week of sun, and a few weeks ago we managed to get away on our own to Barcelona for a few days, which was great. Neither of us had been before and we really enjoyed it.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Walking down the aisle, I wasn’t nervous at all and really enjoyed seeing everybody, I also really enjoyed the ceremony and Noah decided to join us at the altar after we had exchanged our vows which was a really special moment. Rick’s speech was also great, he left it until the last minute but managed to pull it off as everyone was in stitches. The highlight of the day was definitely a performance my sisters had written and put together, which included a dance routine, it was absolutely brilliant, they had me crying with laughter!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | I would say decide your budget at the beginning and stick to it, know exactly how much you want to spend to create your desired look and theme and shop around for prices from different suppliers. If things are costing more than you expect then ask yourself whether you actually need it and whether it will make a difference on the day. Make sure you take up offers of help from bridesmaids, friends and family to take the pressure off you in the days leading up to the big day. Also do what makes you happy, everyone has opinions on what you should and shouldn’t do, who you should invite etc but it’s your day and don’t forget that.
