It may be a bank holiday Monday, but that doesn’t mean we can’t indulge in some serious wedding goodness now does it? In all seriousness this wedding had me hook line and sinker, lets find out why shall we?
WWW readers Lianne and Kye were married on the 23rd July 2016 at Upper House in Derbyshire. Their vision was ‘outdoor woodland boho’ with relaxed vibes. One of the very loveliest things about their celebrations? How much their sweet daughter was involved in the planning and the day itself, a real family affair with many memories made, that’s for sure. Plus the celebrations lasted all weekend to really mark the occasion in style. There were two areas to host their day, both equally magnificent. Firstly their ceremony was held in The Great Hall, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more romantic setting. They chose to have a hanging bauble tea light installation and oodles of greenery and foliage. Then then headed to the dreamy marquee where woodland style décor and flowers transformed the space. Wow.
Lianne and Kye both looked super gorgeous. Lianne chose to wear a dreamy Mori Lee gown with pretty flower crown, Kye opted for a tweed ensemble and their daughter wore a sweet pink dress. Ahhhh just heavenly.
Thanks very much to Kerry Diamond Photography for providing these exquisite images.
THE PROPOSAL | After 7 of being a couple, living together for 6 years and parents for 5 years Kye decided it was time to pop the question. He whisked me away to Rome for a long weekend to the ever so gorgeous Waldorf hotel. He had booked a tour round the colosseum and had envisaged to propose on the arena floor but once we got there and he saw the hundreds of people all around in the area he bottled it. He then waited until we were outside with the most beautiful backdrop and got someone to capture it on camera as he proposed. I wasn’t at all expecting it, I’d given up hope after 7 years!
THE VISION | We wanted a relaxed simple day, with a outdoor woodland boho theme. Nice venue, nice food and nice company.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | I had been employed as a planner for the last 15 years so I am very much into detail and making sure everything is covered and perfect. It was a long thought process and took about 18 months to plan absolutely everything. We did a lot of research and started a huge scrapbook of all our ideas, I did majority of the planning as Kye works extremely hard and is always away from home, I just incorporated some of his ideas. Originally I wanted to do absolutely everything down to the last detail as I’m quite creative however as the date grew closer we made the decision to pay a supplier to achieve the vision we had. It took so much pressure off and I was able to concentrate on enjoying the build up to the wedding weekend. It all worked out amazing.
BUDGET | Erm I’m not going into too much detail on this as some people would pull their faces ‘why would you spend that on one day?’ We talked about it a lot before we booked the venue, yes it cost a lot more than we ever thought we would spend however we have been together for a long time and wanted to make some life long memories for ourselves and our family. To be able to make memories for our little girl means the world to us. We did spend a lot of money, we could have cut back on a lot of it however the vision I had of having a woodland wedding and Kye wanted me to have the wedding of my dreams. I can confirm that not only I did, Kye and Maisey did too. It was perfect in every way and we don’t regret one little bit of it. I think if you work hard and save up you can have whatever you want that makes you happy. A lot of the guests couldn’t believe it when we said how much it cost everyone thought it was at least double, we got the whole wedding, honeymoon, stag and hen party under 30k. With our wedding it wasn’t just the one day, it was the whole weekend which made it even more special.
THE VENUE | I originally wanted a small intimate wedding but Kye has a really big family so intimate was out of the question. One day Kye came home and said we should book a viewing at Upper House in Hayfield. We had never heard of it before and with it only being 20 mins from our home we made an appointment for the following weekend. On the way up to the house we lost phone signal and went further and further along the long lane until we arrived at the gates, it was in the middle of nowhere, we carried on through all the tall beautiful trees, the surroundings were simply stunning. When we got to the house it was breath taking, we knew instantly that we had both fallen in love with it. Being a house it meant we could hire the whole thing from the Friday to the Monday, there were rooms for our bridal party to stay so not only was it just our wedding it was a whole weekend spent making fabulous memories with our dearest friends. It just had everything, the Hudson family who own Upper House are awesome, they have worked so hard on restoring the house, it’s so beautiful, it is one of Derbyshire’s historic hidden gems. Having no phone signal was an added bonus to the weekend, no one was sat looking on their phones, everyone was so relaxed and enjoyed each others company. The house itself had 9 bedrooms although I do think they have increased this now after more renovation work.
The house itself is simply stunning to the smallest detail, there is a Great Hall where we held our ceremony and a very pretty courtyard covered in a stretch tent to protect everyone from the unpredictable peak district weather. With us having 80 day guests and another 40 evening guests we hired a marquee from High Peak Marquees for the wedding breakfast. Stuart from High Peak Marquees was fantastic, we were able to pick all the soft furnishings of the marquee, we changed our mind on several things on the run up to the day, which was no problem at all. With the amount of guests attending we had to provide additional toilet facilities, luxury loos, we did this through High Peak Marquees also.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I went for a Mori Lee dress which I found in Blush Boutique in Upper Mill. I found my dress on the first day, I fell in love instantly. I think I went for something a little bit different to what people would have expected me to choose but keeping with my boho style with the bottom of the dress. I loved it. I have quite simple taste in jewellery, I went for a dream catcher bracelet from Links of London and Kye surprised me on the day with a beautiful Diamond Necklace. My shoes were Jenny Peckham, I love their range of occasion shoes, all my bridesmaids wore Jenny Peckham shoes too.
FINDING THE DRESS | Finding the dress was not much of problem to be honest, me and my bridesmaids went to a couple of wedding fairs and only 2 wedding dress shops. I tried a few styles on but I knew from the start what I wanted it was just a case of finding it. We went to Blush Boutique in Upper Mill, the staff are fantastic, they have a really good eye, after explaining what I wanted she picked it out for me straight away. I was a little bit worried at first on deciding so quickly, would I regret it, did I rush it? Once I got the call 9 months later to say it was ready I fell in love with it all over again.
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Kye chose his own attire for the day, he went with his best man, ushers dad and our friend Matthew who walked me down the aisle. They went for a relaxed look, tweed and then all dressed slightly different. They did a fantastic job, they all looked lovely and it fitted in with our vision really well.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had a reading by one of our bridesmaids Nina. We chose ‘candle on the water’ it’s actually out of the Disney film Pete’s Dragon, sounds daft but we really struggled with a reading as most are extremely soppy and it’s just not us. I love Disney and Kye loves dragons so we thought, why not!
The walking down the aisle music was chosen by our little Maisey, she’s Disney obsessed and what 5 year old wouldn’t have chosen a princess song. She picked ‘I chose the light’ from Tangled. That’s all the Disney influence in the wedding though, promise!
The rest of the music in the day consisted of Jack Johnson, Lumineers, Eva Cassidy, all songs that mean something to us and represented something in some way.
We had two friends of the Rook and the Ravens play in the evening James and Joe Fay, everybody loved them. They sang our first dance song as well, which was Tom O’Dell Grow Old With Me, gorgeous song.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had my oldest best friend from being 5, Mel and 3 of my other closest friends, Lisa, Leanne and Nina, all amazing in their own way. They wore a blush multiway dress with Jenny Peckham shoes.
We had 2 beautiful gorgeous flower girls, our little girl Maisey and her best friend Lilah May. Lilah May’s dad Matthew walked me down the aisle as I sadly lost my dad suddenly 8 years ago. Massey and Lilah wore cute simple pink dresses with white sandals all from Next.
THE FLOWERS | Our bridal flowers were created by the fabulous Gez from Folky Dokey. Gez is based in Glossop, her flowers are preserved and dried, a lot of love and patience goes into making each individual piece. The best part is we all got to keep them. We also hired Red Floral to create the woodland theme throughout the venue.
THE CAKE | My lovely friend Gemma from Everydays A Cupcake made our lovely cake. Myself, Kye and Maisey each chose a flavour of our 3 tiered cake. We wanted artificial flowers gently wrapped round the cake to give it the boho woodland theme.
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | We booked an old school friend Kerry Diamond for our photos. Kerry did a fantastic job, as always. We didn’t want the traditional photos we wanted relaxed candid shots. Kerry was pregnant at the time but didn’t stop her climbing walls to get the best pictures. We had such a laugh on the day with Kerry, she’s so much fun and manages to capture all those moments you were too busy to remember yourself. Kerry has a really good eye for the perfect shot, we have amazing pictures to cherish and look back on in years to come.
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We had arranged for all the guys to go clay pigeon shooting on the morning of the wedding in the grounds, all the girls congregated in one of the kitchens having a giggle whilst we got ready. I had created bridesmaid boxes for all the bridesmaids, full of presents and along with things to get them through the day each containing a letter as to why I cherished our friendship and the reasons as to why I chose them. We had lots of tears throughout that morning, but happy tears. The morning of the wedding was such a big part of the day, the nerves, excitement, tears all with my favourite girls. My old friend Leanne did all our hair beautifully and each style was different. Make up was done by the amazingly talented girls at Beauty Pad from Glossop.
I made the table plan myself with wooden crates, artificial flowers and bits and pieces I picked up over the 18 months. We also decorated the venue with personal touches. We did a memory table of our loved ones which were no longer with us, a heart drop box with wishes from wedding guests. For the favours we went with scratch card for the boys and packets of wild flower seeds for the girls to go with the theme. We hired Red Floral Architecture to dress the great hall and the marquee for the wedding breakfast. In the great hall we had hanging bauble tea lights hanging form the ceiling with foliage hanging down to create the outdoor feel. In the marquee we went full on woodland, with trees, ladybirds, mushrooms and lots of flowers, it looked absolutely beautiful. We also hired Hipswing to decorate the courtyard with festoon lighting and up lights.
My dad sadly passed away in 2008 and not to have him there in person was always going to be extremely hard so I had a lovely little charm made to attach to my bouquet so he could walk me down the aisle. We also had a lantern and his picture in the marquee to have him there for the wedding breakfast.
We hired Vanilla In All Seasons to provide the food, we didn’t want the traditional wedding food so we opted for an American platter to start, BBQ for main and a trio of desserts. During the evening we had a hog roast, the food went down a treat. All the guests said it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding. The staff at Vanilla are outstanding, nothing is too much trouble. I had a bit of a moment on the day and requested for tables to swapped and the layout to be changed, this was done at the blink of an eye, perfect.
We wanted some entertainment for after the wedding breakfast whilst the evening guests arrived. After meeting Sam Fitton a magician based in Manchester we knew we couldn’t do any better. We originally met Sam in cafe in Manchester to have a chat, we left that cafe feeling as though we had known him for years. Amazing genuine guy who loves the values of weddings and doesn’t see it as a money making game unlike some suppliers out there. Sam kept in touch right up to the day and everyone was baffled and entertained at the same time.
THE HONEYMOON | We decided to head to Rhodes for our honeymoon, with having a 5 year old we didn’t want to go for any longer. We had the most relaxing time, it was so nice to spend some quality time together with how hectic it had been on the months leading up to the wedding.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The weather was on our side, it was the first weekend not to rain in the last 4 weeks, I still think my dad made the sun shine on the day, it made it that extra bit special. To us the whole day was memorable we loved every single minute. We created so many memories for us as a family, Maisey felt like a princess and watched her mummy and daddy get married. Everyone is still talking about it when we see people now, we’re glad everyone enjoyed it as much as we did. We had lots of friends and family help out with the day and helped make us have the most amazing wedding day.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Take your time planning, collate all your ideas and sit down together to discuss which you both like.
Don’t send out your invites too early as a lot can change and you don’t want to end up regretting inviting certain guests.
Take a minute in the day to spend 5 mins with your husband, just to get a breather and take it all in.
Don’t let anything spoil your day, it’s your day you only have to please the two of you getting married.
