Ever seen the film The Secret Garden? I have to say I have many a time and share the same love of the childhood classic as today’s bride.
WWW readers Charlotte and James got hitched on the 28th May 2016 and held their reception at Utopia set in the grounds of Broughton Hall Estate in Yorkshire. As soon as they saw the hidden walled garden it reminded Charlotte of her favourite childhood film, and so the theme commenced. Touches such as the place names with keys and and fresh blooms gave a nod to the film. Talking of the blooms, gorgeous pale pink roses and peonies were used throughout, they looked especially lovely alongside the lavender bridesmaid dresses.
Charlotte picked the romantic Justin Alexander 8733 ‘Daisy’ to wear, in which she looked beautiful, with it’s high neck line and jewelled belt detailing. James donned a navy wool suit with dark brown brogues for a classic look. What a super stunning pair.
Many thanks to Paul Joseph Photography for sharing these sensational shots.
THE PROPOSAL | We went on fabulous holiday to sunny Dubai for a week in March of 2014. We were in our hotel room on the last evening of our trip and had been on desert safari that afternoon. James had taken his clubs to have a game or two, (being golf obsessed as he is! J) and this is where he pulled out the hidden box with my ring in. He asked me to open the box and to my complete shock asked me to marry him, very emotional! It came to light that he had been planning it for months and had the ring made in Dubai ready for him to propose on our trip. Just perfect!
THE VISION | From the first moment we saw our wedding venue Utopia we just fell in love with it. James loved the openness of the glass walls and outdoor feel, and I loved the fact that Utopia itself is hidden in a walled garden. It instinctively reminded me of my favourite childhood film, The Secret Garden. It was this that led us to go for a Secret Garden theme with lots of flowers and other little touches.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | The planning process itself wasn’t as difficult as we thought it would be. We got lots of ideas from pinterest etc, and me being super organised meant everything was planned and spread out over the course of 18 months to limit the level of stress. We also got a lot of help from our mums who were just amazing throughout.
THE VENUE | Utopia – Broughton Hall Estate.
St Andrews Church – Gargrave.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Justin Alexander – Style 8733 ‘Daisy’.
Head piece by Laura Rhodes.
Bridal earrings by Olivier Laudus.
Shoes by Pink by Paradox.
FINDING THE DRESS | I found my wedding dress at Ava Rose Hamilton, which is a family run Bridal boutique in Silsden. For years I had driven past the shop window and dreamed of one day going inside. I tried a number of other dresses on which I loved but didn’t look quite right, then my mum suggested I try on my dress. Well I just fell in love with it before I had even been properly fastened it. I had wanted to find a dress that was timeless and elegant and it was exactly that. I didn’t try on another dress after that, or go to any other shops so my experience was stress free!
GROOM’S ATTIRE | James suit was a gorgeous Navy, made from Italian Tessuti Marzotto wool. It was from the Next designer Signature collection, with dark brown leather brogues also from the same collection. He wanted something sharp and classic and it was perfect!
THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had a Church of England wedding service at the beautiful St Andrews church in Gargrave. I walked down the aisle to Birdy ‘Wings’ and we had a beautiful reading from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin entitled ‘A Fathers advice to his daughter’.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Were simply stunning! I had my best friend Becki as my maid of honour, my cousin Kelly came from Australia (we had dressed up in her mums wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses together as children). My beautiful friends Charlotte, Gemma and Laura.. and my oldest friend since the age of 4.. Elisa! They were dressed in a beautiful Lavender with jewelled shoulders and stunning stud earrings by Beaverbrooks.
THE FLOWERS | Our flowers were done by Fleuriste at Woodbank – and wow what an amazing job Jo and her team did! We wanted a soft pastel look to compliment my dress, James suit and bridesmaid dresses. We went for Amnesia roses for the button holes, white bouquets with white peonies in for the bridesmaids, and then my bridal bouquet was made up of blush pink and white peonies and amnesia roses. Just gorgeous!
THE CAKE | Our cake was made by a family friend Carmel. We wanted a simple but beautiful cake with three tiers, and it was just that. She added lovely blush pink and cream icing flowers to the top and in clusters on the sides, there was also lace edged round the bottom of each tier. It had the traditional fruit cake bottom tier as well!
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographers were Paul and Kelly from Paul Joseph Photography. To say that they captured our day perfectly would be an understatement! They are just simply amazing. The first time we met them it was as though we had known them for years. They are such good fun to work with and put both us and our families at ease on the day. We just love the way they have captured our day as though it’s a story being told. On the day they took us off in the early evening for some sunset photos and these are our favourite from the whole collection! Stunning.
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | As part of our Secret Garden theme we had banquet tables all adjoined, with little silver garden buckets full of flowers that complimented my bridal bouquet, dotted down all our tables. Our name cards were little brown tags with silver keys attached to envisage the key to the garden. For months up to the wedding we had asked friends and family to collect jars for us, these were decorated with brown twine rope and we put candles inside them to sit in the grounds outside. We also had wooden light letters made of our initials ‘J & C’ which looked gorgeous with the floral buckets and vintage rope jars.
THE HONEYMOON | Two weeks in paradise – Mauritius! It was perfect and just what we needed after a busy few weeks in the run up to the big day.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | There are so many to choose from! A few of our favourites are; the estate peacock coming to join us for pictures, the throwing of the bouquet, speeches, emotional vows, hilarious jokes and stories told whilst having our photos taken, amazing Yorkshire themed food! Dancing the night away and a conga train round the dancefloor!
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Take 10 minutes out of the day with your other half and a drink and sit back and watch together. Enjoy every second as it goes so fast! Don’t stress about the little things, you won’t care on the day!
