Creative & Eclectic Warehouse Wedding

I do love an individual couple that throw out the wedding rule book and throw a bash worthy of their relationship instead. These two chose all of the things they love most, such as grilled cheese sandwiches, gold Nike trainers, dinosaur tattoos and a Street Fighter computer game contest instead of a first dance. YES.

Stuart and Chloe were married on the 11th July 2015 and held their reception at Fruit in Hull. Their urban feel warehouse wedding suited their eclectic style perfectly. I really adore the pops of orange in the attire, the nacho bar and DIY blooms galore, which I have to mention was all achieved on an £8000 budget.

Chloe looked stunning in her romantic gown while Stuart wore a blue suit and converse. The sparkly ASOS frocks worn by the bridesmaids looked nothing short of gorgeous.

Thanks so much to Sarah Beth Photo for sending over these brilliant shots.

THE PROPOSAL | Oct 2014 : we were in Hong Kong visiting my parents, it’s where I grew up. We had been hiking and island hopping that day. So when we got home we decided to stay in for supper, get pizza and fizz then watch the nightly laser show. We watched the show from the 38th floor apartment and then Stu asked ‘do you fancy being Mrs Deaks?’. Luckily my fingers weren’t still swollen from the heat!

THE VISION | Relaxed, only things that we liked. Neither of us is very formal and the idea of a traditional wedding was very much not us. So we wrote a list of things we did and didn’t like, then went from there.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We both do a lot of organising for work so it didn’t feel stressful to do it all ourselves. We booked the reception venue first (Fruit in Hull) because we knew we wanted to go there. Then we just enjoyed being engaged for a bit.

BUDGET | In total we spent around £8000, for absolutely everything.

THE VENUE | The reception was at Fruit on Humber Street, they were so accommodating and basically let us do what we liked. We just knew that we wanted a relaxed space. So we had the main space decorated with lights and lots of orange accessories, then the back room had our nacho table, Chinese decorations on a guest table and lots of space for grilled cheese sandwiches from Thieving Harry’s.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I bought one of the first dresses I tried on, it was from Brides and Co on Princes Ave. I know they would be a lovely place to go because they were recommended by a friend (her sister runs it). It was lovely. With my mum living abroad and not able to come and look at dresses with me, I cut to the chase a bit more quickly than if the actual hunt was an event in itself. Mum bought my dress for me and it was very me, relaxed, ballerina like and something I was super to be wearing. I wore it with sparkly heels for the ceremony, then gold Nike trainers as soon as I could get the heels off!

Accessories: My big brother and sister in law bought me a beautiful gold bracelet (which is a traditional gift in Chinese culture for the little sister). Mum and Dad gave me a jade pendant necklace (again it’s traditional for parents to give this to their daughter). I also wore one of the necklaces that my mum wears every day, she wore the other. The finally accessory was a necklace I was given the night before the wedding by our fur baby, Timmy the cat. I assume that Stu helped him pick it.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Stu chose his suit (blue) and the suits for his boys in grey. He chose orange accessories and we later realised that the suit was virtually the same as the one my bro wore on his wedding day which was lovely. He wore converse type sneakers, as did the boys and they all had super hero cufflinks. He’s the last of the three to get married and they’ve all been each other’s best men. They included their gifts to each other for the other two weddings into their outfits.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had 2 readings, one by my brother and sister in law, the other by 2 close friends. I walked in to Elbow ‘One Day Like This’ and when we walked out it was the throne room scene from Star Wars ‘A New Hope’. We spent a little while choosing things we really liked, Stu kept trying to sneak the theme from Game of Thrones in…

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My three best friends wore dresses from ASOS that were a shimmery Heather grey, my mum bought them each a necklace with the symbol for double happiness on them. We also had a ‘flower panda’, our little buddy Penny who was a couple of weeks off 2 years old and she did a brilliant job.

THE FLOWERS | I love buying flowers from Eden florist Newland Avenue, I didn’t really see the point in paying lots for someone to create bouquets for me when it’s something I really fancied doing myself (with bridesmaid help). I didn’t order specific flowers I just spoke to the florist about the sort of look (bright, soft, Jurassic park-y, I think), then went and bought a load on Friday before the wedding. Stu has really bad hay fever so I kept away from anything pollen-y. I made my bouquet, bridesmaid Harriet made the buttonholes and bridesmaids bouquets, then she and I ( with the other bridesmaids and good friend Rachel) made the rest of the arrangements.

THE CAKE | We had a tower of brownies made by two good friends. They also surprised us with a brides cake (that had a Chinese waving cat on the top) and a groom cake (with green icing and an Incredible Hulk on top) .

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The fabulous Sarah from Sarah Beth Photography, she was ACE. She even gently reminded me to go to the loo before I put my frock on, sounds daft it was really helpful!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We made everything from the ribbon chandeliers and personalised place mats, to the dip dyed and stamped favour bags filled with temporary dinosaur tattoos and drumstick lollies (Stu’s favourite).

We’re lucky to have talented friends who did all sorts from baking to driving me to the venue in their vintage car.

The team at Fruit were SO helpful with putting things up AND taking it all down so we didn’t have to. Our day became a bit of an homage to Hull, with food from Hull Pie and Thieving Harry’s, the land train took guests from the ceremony to the reception and Sarah got some great iconic Hull sights into our photos.

THE HONEYMOON | We went to Turkey and stayed in a beautiful hotel set on a hillside in a national park, fabulous.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | I love to dance, Stu hates to dance, but we BOTH love video games. So instead of a first dance where Stu would have felt really uncomfortable, we hooked up a games console to the big screen and played Street Fighter. I won.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Do you, it’s your day. You don’t HAVE to do anything. We wanted to look back at the knowing we had a fab time and we REALLY did.
