Crafty Fun & Personal Arts Centre Wedding

The vibes at Jill and Stuart’s late August wedding were truly lovely, thanks to their effort to ensure a fun and personal day of celebrations. Their venue was a blank canvas and so they had a year to plan every little detail, it really worked out just perfectly. They tied the knot at York House in Twickenham, London, before embarking on a boat trip down the Thames to Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington. A really unusual and cool touch, which certainly must have been a unique experience for their guests.

Their colour scheme stemmed from Jill’s grey gown; red, pink and golds worked so wonderfully with the hue. Think bountiful roses, peonies and foliage for the floral arrangements, twinkling lighting in the reception venue along with hand crafted touches. The space really looked magical with it’s well thought out decoration.

Back to Jill’s dress and I am loving the billowing Vera Wang ball gown she chose from David’s Bridal, wasn’t it totally dreamy? Stuart coordinated perfectly in his grey ensemble with red tie and the maids wore multi-way dresses from Tesco believe it or not. Stunning.

THE PROPOSAL | The Skylon – Southbank. Where we had one of our first dates. Make sure you do it in public because they give you free drinks.

THE VISION | From the beginning we wanted something fun and relaxed and that reflected us as a couple.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We started planning the wedding about a year before, as the reception venue was basically an empty room we had to plan and hire in EVERYTHING. From staff down to napkins!

THE VENUE | York House, Twickenham. We loved the beautiful rooms at York House along with the relaxed feel of the venue and beautiful gardens. It was also great that we could rent the Winter Gardens room after the ceremony for our drinks reception, it was a lovely bright space for the guests to escape the late summer rain.

Landmark Arts Centre, Teddington. We had visited this venue several years before for an orchestra performance, I was amazed and remember thinking this would be an incredible venue for a wedding. After the proposal I immediately looked it up to see if we could hire it. We visited a couple of other venues but I knew all along that this would be the one. We also loved that it’s a complete blank canvas and we could make it totally our own.

As both the venues are on the River Thames we decided it would be fun to get a boat between the two.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress – Vera Wang at David’s Bridal. I knew I wanted something with a hint of the untraditional. I never thought I would end up with a strapless ball gown, but I fell in love with the colour. It gave the dress the something different I was looking for.

FINDING THE DRESS | I went to several local bridal boutiques and didn’t find anything that was in the running, when I saw my dress on the mannequin in David’s Bridal, I was wowed.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | We wanted a well fitting grey suit, that was the brief. After visiting A LOT of suit shops, we went with Suit Supply in the Westfield shopping centre. A reasonably priced and reasonably competent tailor.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Entrance music was the theme tune to Curb Your Enthusiasm. The heavy plodding of the tunes opening few bars perfectly complimented me as a bride. And then lighter, more graceful second section was evocative of the groom’s elegant and erudite nature.

The reading was taken from the documentary Him & Her.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Multi-way dresses from F&F Tesco. These were a great buy, a very popular bridesmaid style and a fraction of the usual price. They came in the perfect slightly darker shade of grey to compliment my dress.

THE FLOWERS | The Real Flower Company. I wanted relaxed and rustic looking flowers for the bouquets. I saw some of The Real Flower Companies work in magazines and loved them, they were just the look I was hoping for, I loved that they also incorporate herbs into the bouquets. They also smelt amazing.

I did the flowers for the venue myself, I ordered the stems in from a local garden centre for the day before and found some simple milk bottle vases to display them in. Milk, life’s water.

THE CAKE | We both really liked the idea of making the cake say something about us as a couple and had the idea to incorporate taxidermy into the cake. We had been on a mouse taxidermy course together, which bemused a lot of our friends, and so thought it would be fun to have a couple of stuffed mice on top of the cake as our cake topper. We also wanted the cake to tie in with the general theme of the day, so I ordered some plain iced cakes from a local cake maker and decorated them myself to match the birch trees we had hired into the venue.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Sophie Duckworth Photography. We were so lucky that Sophie was a friend of ours and that we loved her work. We asked her to be our photographer at a friend’s wedding, before we were even engaged! It was important to me to have someone that I knew and trusted as well as a fantastic photographer. Sophie totally exceeded our expectations, we couldn’t be happier with the photos from the day, they are perfect. I am still wowed by all her work, each couples photos are so unique.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | The reception venue was vast and we were having a relatively small wedding, so it was important to us to make the space feel cosy and full. We had the idea to hire in some large trees to create almost screens to reduce the size of the dining area and make it feel a little more intimate. Lighting was also important and I loved the idea of using lots of fairy lights in the trees, with the stone work of the building with the trees I wanted it to feel enchanted and a mix of the indoors and out. The venue has a large red carpet, I felt it important to coordinate this into the colour scheme, so red became one of the colours, along with gold, which I felt worked well with the church venue and we combined these with a soft pink. I felt all these colours would work with the grey, which had already been decided by my dress!

I enjoy crafts so a lot of the details were handmade by me, including hours sticking hundreds of fake flowers onto a frame for the seating plan. We also made an activity book for each guest, featuring drawings and games relating to people in the wedding party.

THE HONEYMOON | Weekend in Bath.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The reception venue; I was so worried leading up to it after organising and making so much ourselves, that it wouldn’t look like the vision in my head when it was all put together. It exceeded my expectations.

The speeches; the speeches were fantastic, incredibly funny and well written. I love looking back at the photos and seeing all the guests enjoying them as much as we did.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Think of everything.
