Chic & Rustic Grey Barn Wedding

We have a perfectly chic barn wedding for you today. WWW readers Kate and Gary tied the knot on 1st October 2016 at The Granary Wedding Barn. They crafted a wonderfully intimate stylish yet rustic atmosphere with help from a very talented family, with everything from handmade signs to painted mason jars and absolutely brilliant chair decorations made by the bride’s mum. Kate even made the cake herself.

The couple really wanted to spend a whole weekend with their nearest and dearest and I think they created a special atmosphere for their nuptials. Both families are really musical so dedicated songs took the place of speeches and a family band was formed specially for the occasion!

Kate wore a fabulous Essence of Australia white gown and the menfolk adopted a relaxed look, with Gary sporting a dark grey Next suit and the groomsmen choosing their own outfits. I just adore the perfect princess flower girls and don’t you think their willow heart wands are just darling?

Thanks so much to Kev Elkins Photography for these fantastic images.

THE PROPOSAL | For my birthday in 2015 Gary made me a glass jar full of lovely little handwritten notes about us that I could open every day. After waking up very late to catch a flight for a week in the sun on 26th September 2015 I went to open one of my notes and found a ring box at the bottom of the jar. Gary had changed all the notes to ‘Will you marry me’. I could have found the notes at any time that morning, it just so happened that Gary had only just got out of the shower and had his hands covered in hair gel when I burst in saying YES!

THE VISION | We both had our hearts set on a barn wedding. We wanted a small intimate wedding where we could enjoy all of our friends and family for a weekend of celebrations. Our theme was based on a rustic chic with a grey and white colour theme.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We had already seen an amazing barn and holiday cottage complex when we had first started talking weddings. We went to visit The Granary wedding barn on our return from holiday and fell in love immediately. So much so we did not visit any other locations and booked the following week.

THE VENUE | The Granary Wedding Barn and Elms Farm Cottages, Hubberts Bridge, Lincolnshire

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Essence of Australia D1670 white gown with full length veil. Jewellery was Pandora, a gift from my mum. My beautiful hairpiece was by Ulyana Aster.

FINDING THE DRESS | I only wanted my mum with me to choose my dress. It was lovely spending time with her choosing my perfect gown and made a perfect (tearful) surprise for my Bridesmaids on the morning of the wedding! I found my dress in the fourth shop I visited and immediately fell in love with it.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | We wanted our wedding to be a casual affair and left all of the men to pick their own suits in whatever style they were most comfortable. We brought the wedding party together with their beautiful buttonholes. Gary chose a dark grey Next suit and the pageboys were in Rocha.John.Rocha trousers, shirt and waistcoats.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Being a couple who both love music it was a very important part of the day having the right music. Although not exactly traditional, the music was personal to us. Gary’s two friends did a perfect acoustic guitar set to welcome our guests. My bridesmaids and I walked in to Elle King ‘Make you Smile’. We signed the register to Ed Sheeran ‘Tenerife Sea’ (we flew out to Tenerife after the proposal!) and Gary and I walked out to Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift ‘Everything has Changed’.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My beautiful bridesmaids were Deb and Amy, two of my closest friends, my Maid of Honour was my best friend Sarah, and my flower girls were my step daughter Molly, Gary’s niece Elva and my God-daughter Abigail. The bridesmaids wore In One Clothing dresses in Slate. My flower girls wore beautiful ivory lace and tulle dresses from John Lewis with silver glitter ballerina pumps! They were the perfect princesses!

THE FLOWERS | My mum’s cousin Tina kindly made all of our bouquets and flower displays. I wanted white hydrangeas, dusky pink roses, eucalyptus leaves and gypsophilia. As well as all of the bouquets, button holes and corsages for the wedding party, Tina also filled wooden crates with wonderful displays around the barn. I hand painted Mason jars in grey and white chalk paint and Tina filled them with white hydrangeas, gypsophila and eucalyptus leaves for the table centre pieces.

THE CAKE | I run a small cake business in addition to my full time job so I was adamant from the start that I would be making my own wedding cake. I made a three tier salted caramel naked layer cake decorated with dusky pink roses and sponge hearts. I also make a dessert table of cupcakes and loaf layer cakes for after the meal and for the evening guests.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Kev Elkins Wedding Photography. We could not have chosen a better photographer. Kev was recommended to us by a friend. His work was faultless and he produced exactly what we were looking for. He stayed well into the night and got some amazing pictures of all our guests dancing and drinking the night away.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | From the invitations to the wedding signs our wedding was pretty much a handmade affair. Sticking with the rustic theme I handmade wooden signs from broken up crates, hand painted mason jars in chalk paint for the table centre pieces, Gary, my mum and I spent hours hand making our invitations, my mum handmade beautiful fabric hearts to hang from the backs of the chairs, which guests were then able to take home. We filled the barn with battery operated pillar candles and wooden crates filled with beautiful flowers. I can’t not mention my wonderful family and bridesmaids putting together what felt like hundreds of grey and white paper pom poms!! We have all vowed never to touch another pom pom……we all have!!!

We also used a range of candles holders, vintage bird cages and picture frames to decorate the barn, which were from my friend’s wedding styling company Blossom and Grace, Lincoln.

THE HONEYMOON | After the excitement of the wedding we chose to have a week in Cornwall so we could enjoy some much needed relaxation time together. We stayed in the most beautiful and stylish self catering beach hut in Whitsand Bay Cornwall. We enjoyed a week of breath-taking views from our hot tub with a glass of bubbles!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Coming from musical families music was one of the main focuses of the day for us both. So much so we ended up calling the wedding ‘The Blackston Festival’. We had friends playing an acoustic guitar set to welcome our guests, My dad’s band played the first set to kick off the evenings entertainment and our friends band played the rest of the evening with a cracking set which kept everyone on the dancefloor all night long!

The most memorable moment though was Gary putting together a family band, consisting of him on guitar, my Dad on drums, his best friend Ken playing the acoustic guitar and his friend Chris on bass. Gary dedicated each of his songs to our family and friends instead of doing the traditional speeches!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Don’t be afraid to plan the day for the two of you. It is so important to remember that it is YOUR day. Don’t feel pressured to stick to tradition or what your family and friends think you should be doing. I am so pleased that we made the days ours. It was the perfect blend of both of our personalities and it made for the most intimate and memorable day.
