Charming & Natural Countryside Tipi Wedding

We are deep in the Yorkshire countryside today courtesy of WWW readers Matthew and Lorna and their wonderfully beautiful wedding day set on the 5th August 2016. It’s coming up to a year since their wedding and their guests are still talking about it! It’s no wonder with it’s two marvellous venues, majestic tipi reception, stunning rolling views and incredible live music performances. Not to mention the fun and games supplied for guests to play outside, the delicious cuisine on offer and a masterpiece naked cake tower. Wow.

The vision was to create a wedding which was natural and with a focus on their loved ones. I am sure you’ll agree that they nailed in to a T. Especially when you see just how brilliantly their day was captured by Paul Joseph Photography, those sun drenched shots left me with goosebumps. The tipi was decorated so perfectly, with rustic wooden touches and incredibly magical festoon lighting, which come evening was a sight for sore eyes.

A gorgeous couple, in the most beautiful attire, just so in love. This is a real treat.

THE PROPOSAL | 24th December 2015 (Christmas Eve) we were staying at the Crab and Lobster Crab Manor hotel in Thirsk. It was our second stay there and was becoming somewhat of a tradition. We sat down to a lovely dinner, it was a cosy, romantic setting. We had finished our main course and I went to the ladies. When I returned I picked up my napkin from the table and there was a box underneath. At first I thought it was just going to be a lovely surprise Christmas present but when I opened it there was a beautiful ring in it. I was speechless, Matthew then said “what I’m trying to say is will you marry me?” Of course I said yes. Best Christmas present ever!!

THE VISION | As we live next to the moor we wanted a very countryside wedding.

We wanted things as natural as possible and simple, with the focus being on family and the day itself.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | And so it started! I made a scrap book full of ideas! We chose the caterer (GFS Exquisite Wedding and Special Event Caterers from Broughton, near Skipton) and then the day was set. I was my own wedding planner because I knew exactly what I wanted. I started looking at venues to get married in and although a little further away than I wanted I went to look at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal in Ripon. I thought I’d go to just tick it off the list but I fell in love and booked it. We had our hearts set on teepees after spending that Christmas visiting a local tepee company’s event in Ilkley and fell in love with the rustic feel of them.

With the teepees then booked we found the perfect location in Bolton Abbey that over looked the valley and Bolton Abbey steam train station. It was all starting to come together! I went to various wholesalers and slowly started making wedding décor and favours with the help from my bridesmaids, our lounge became my workshop in the months leading up to it. In the mean time we suited and booted all the grooms men and bridesmaids and I started wedding dress shopping.

We went to various wedding fairs in the next few months and that’s where I fell in love with the Event Music Company, there was no compromise here, I was going to walk down the aisle to them playing! I called in a few favours from various people for the finishing touches like my fabulous cousin who owns Pippa Design to help me create a beautiful archway to walk through. It was really starting to feel real now!

THE VENUE | We had the ceremony at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. We were married in the beautiful great chamber in Fountains Hall and then had drinks and canapés in the stunning Elizabethan tea garden (the door into the garden was featured in The Secret Garden, my favourite childhood film).

We then had photos in and around the old Abbey. It was fabulous!!

We then made our way to Bolton Abbey. We had our teepees set up in a field just beyond the post office looking over the valley and steam train railway line. It was beautiful and felt like we were the only ones there.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My wonderful dress was from Ava Rose Hamilton in Silsden. It had pearls on the bodice and a beautiful layered net shirt with silk edging. I felt like a princess!! I had a hair piece in that was simple and elegant made of silver leaves and little pearls (also from Ava Rose Hamilton) I had a long veil that matched the net of my dress with a silk edging.

I had a bracelet made by the Matty Tree in Burley in Wharfedale that was personalised for my dad as he sadly passed away. A little piece of him was walking down the aisle with me.

FINDING THE DRESS | So this part was the hardest for me! I tried so many on from so many different places and ended up buying one then changing it!! I had my mum and sister in law and bridesmaids help me find the right one eventually!! We did cut it a little close. I wanted a dress I could run in and play in with the children and not feel restricted in. I thought I wanted a simple plain dress but then I tried on “the” dress and it was completely the opposite. The ladies at Ava Rose Hamilton were fab and made the whole process fun and special.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Matthew has an idea of grey, which worked well. He got his suit from Eric Spencer’s of Ilkley. He went for a light grey waist coat that had a navy check through it and long grey tails with a grey and blue checked tie and pocket handkerchief to complete the look. The groomsmen were in matching, while the page boys had navy shorts and grey waist coats and purple ties.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We had two readings, one from the groom’s mother and one from the bride’s mother. They both chose a reading that they thought would suit, mainly about love, life and family.

We had the Event Music Company provide the music for the whole wedding. They started off as a three piece called trio Vivo, which included a violin, cello and piano. They played while the guest arrived then they played Pachelbel Canon as I came in the room. They played Wherever You Will Go while we signed the register and then Take That’s Greatest Day as we were leaving.

They then turned into a duo at the tepees with a piano and cello playing for guests arriving and played throughout the afternoon. They played all sorts and was lovely to listen too while chatting and greeting guests. In the evening we had Chris Hilton’s Little Big Band playing, which again were supplied by Event Music. The played up to date music and classics. They got everyone onto the dance floor enjoying themselves and even managed to get us in a boys v girls dance off by the end of the night! Great fun!!

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | We had five adult bridesmaids with dresses from FHFH (For Her and For Him). I chose different colours to complement their skin tones and different styles to suit their shapes. We had dark purple, pale purple, violet, grey and a nude colour. I wanted them all to be different to go with their different personalities as well. The flower girls were in white dresses that were a similar style to mine. Lace at the bottom and netting at the top. They were from Light in the Box.

THE FLOWERS | We used a local florist in Ilkley called The Green Room who were amazing! They listened to exactly what I wanted and created some beautiful pieces. They even managed to source me some sweet peas as they reminded me of my dad. The flowers were whites, purples and pale pinks with some green foliage. The young bridesmaids and page boys had baby’s breath as their flowers.

THE CAKE | We used Patisserie Viennoise in Otley for our cake. I wanted a naked wedding cake to keep in with the theme of the wedding and it was perfect! We had one tier of the cake that was a Victoria sponge, a chocolate sponge in the middle and another Victoria sponge on top. We had flowers scattered on it that matched my bouquet and white chocolate hearts dotted around it. On the top we had little bunting that said Mr and Mrs Rutter.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographers were Paul Joseph Photography. We chatted to Paul and Kelly before the day to understand how it would all work and what we wanted. It was brilliant having to photographers as we got so many amazing pictures and would highly recommend them to anyone. We hardly knew they were there snapping and when they were taking more formal pictures it just felt like they were two more friends that were attending so we had a great time and I think that shows on the photos.

They captured the wedding brilliantly and I love looking at my pictures.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We used the lovely Typical Type for some of the décor. They provided us with a giant L & M and some festoon lighting that looked magical. The rest of the décor was made by myself and family members. My brother made me some fab sign posts saying Lorna and Matthew’s wedding, my cousin made a beautiful archway out of foliage and my sister in law made some giant straw rabbits in their best wedding attire!

The favours we made we little silver buckets wrapped in twine with a hessian pouch that contained a compost disc and some British Heart Fountain seeds for people to grow at home. We had a horse box for our photo booth, it was decked out with fairy lights, hay bales and props and a Polaroid camera. When people had taken a few pics they stuck one in our guest book and wrote something lovely next to it. We had giant jenga, bowels, nerf guns and noughts and crosses so people just sat out and played. The table names were also linked to props! Each table had a bag hanging on a chair, i.e. hats, shades, bling, deelyboppers, moustaches, funny faces, air guitar, microphones etc.… and one guest on every table had an envelope. In this was instructions… the person with the envelope had to make all guests on the table wear the props when they saw fit throughout the meal. It was very funny to watch!

THE HONEYMOON | The honeymoon started off by us traveling to Venice! It was a perfect choice filled with culture and experiences. We stayed in the Hilton Molino Stucky. It was lovely with a brilliant sky bar and roof top pool. The weather was beautiful and we got to see some amazing things. From Venice we had a quick pit stop in Barcelona then on to Mallorca. We stated in Gran Melia de Mar. It was a beautiful hotel, with beautiful food and views. We were able to completely switch off after what had been a very few crazy and busy months.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Ha! There was a few!! Obviously the whole day was memorable but one bit that I still laugh about was when we were on our way and one of my bridesmaids who I was traveling with got a phone call. It was the groom…. He had forgot the rings!!! We made a quick U turn and went back for them! After arriving well over half an hour late, we all piled out and was getting into position. Someone was getting our rings ready to tie onto the cushion when they opened the box my ring was in and it flew out down the back of a huge old radiator!!! Panic set in again for the second time as everyone was trying to get it back out. It ended with a very old antique carpet being pulled up and then finally we were back on track! The rest of the day ran like a dream, it was amazing seeing everyone’s faces and reactions when they saw the tepees, all the hard work had paid off! It was so relaxed with adults and children all playing giant jenga, bowls, and nerf gun shoot out and in hay bale forts. It was perfect!!!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Relax! What will be will be! And remember the importance of why you’re doing it! The most memorable thing for me was seeing everyone so happy, young and old! Everyone came together, everyone enjoying each other’s company. People are still talking about ours a year on and saying what a fabulous day they had. That really made it for me.
