Rainbow Mismatched Kids Party Inspired Wedding

Sometimes I read a real wedding report and just want to be besties with a couple. Today that happened. From the kids party theme to the rainbow colours and awesome film references, this is my kind of celebration.

WWW readers Matt and Kerry tied the knot on Saturday 1st August 2015 at The Bond Company in Birmingham, with it’s industrial chic feel it was the perfect blank canvas. Think bouncy castle, DIY details, balloons, pom poms and a home baked rainbow cake. YES. Kerry looked gorgeous in her sweetheart neckline bow belted gown with yellow cardie, while Matt wore a dapper blue suit and red tie. This wedding is definitely going to make you smile today.

Huge thanks goes to Jessica Raphael Photography for sharing these happy and beautiful shots with us.

THE PROPOSAL | Matt’s a web developer, so he did what he does best and created a website! We were going on holiday to Rome and I had an inkling he was going to pop the question there, as his best friend let it slip on a night out that Matt had a big surprise for me. The bigger surprise was when I came home one evening to Matt cooking all my favourite food and his laptop on the dining room table, open to a website dedicated to me. It was perfect! Rome then became our engagement honeymoon.

THE VISION | Very colourful, mis-matched, a big kid’s party! Bright colours make everyone happy. Plus I’m terrible at colour co-ordination, choosing every colour as the colour scheme made our lives easier!

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We were engaged for 2 years before getting married. The original plan was Las Vegas with a few family and friends and an Elvis impersonator but that all fell apart once my friend Natasha explained that we didn’t need a traditional wedding, we could just have a big party with everyone we loved. I find it difficult to turn down a party, and decided to plan the best party ever. We halved the duties and spent about 18months slowly planning the day.

THE VENUE | The Bond Company in Digbeth, Birmingham. I fell in love with the Bond as soon as we walked in the gates. Although both us are not originally from Birmingham (Matt is Cornish and I’m Australian via London), we met and fell in love here and plan on staying around a while. The location is perfect for a city wedding – close enough to a huge choice of hotels and easy transport links for out of town guests but away from the town centre chaos. It’s right on the canal so you can watch the narrow boats pass by. The staff were amazing at every stage of planning and the whole day ran without a hitch. The BBQ was delicious and they even made a special meal for my Gran who doesn’t like burgers, she was extremely happy with her egg and chips!

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | The dress was from Berketex in Birmingham. I altered the neckline to a sweetheart and removed the long train to make it easier to jump on the bouncy castle! Shoes are Dorothy Perkins and the glitter bows from LexyLuxDesign on Etsy. Matt bought me a moon necklace as a wedding present which I opened on the morning (it’s a geeky Game of Thrones reference – Moon of My Life).

FINDING THE DRESS | I actually hated dress shopping! I dragged my mum and sister around loads of shops but none of us could agree on a dress. In the end, I went shopping alone and after a few disasters at different shops (I do not look good in full length navy blue lace) stumbled upon Berketex. The ladies in there were so nice. They listened to me when I told them what I wanted and picked the dress for me. I loved it straight away, it was the only dress I could imagine walking down the aisle in.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | The suit is by Jeff Banks from Debenhams. Shoes were Topman and the tie from Next. He wore his Grandad’s cufflinks as a reminder of those that couldn’t be with us on the day.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We are big cinema fans and wanted to keep all of the music film related. I walked down the aisle with my Dad to the Vitamin String Quartet version of ‘Us’ by Regina Spektor (500 Days of Summer). We signed the register to a selection of instrumental songs: Married Life – Up, Define Dancing – WallE, La Vie En Ring – 27 Dresses, Andalasia – Enchanted. The recessional was ‘You Make My Dreams Comes True’ by Hall & Oates. Our first dance was to ‘I Wanna Grow Old With You’ from The Wedding Singer.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | No bridesmaids, but I did have 2 unofficial bridesmaids: my sister Natalie and longest friend Natasha.

THE FLOWERS | The peony bouquet was made by Flower Design of Lichfield. The other flowers were all random bunches bought from Tesco on the Friday morning and our mums spent hours arranging them into vases in the afternoon.

THE CAKE | My family love baking, so I knew early on I wanted to bake the wedding cake myself. I made a rainbow cake with vanilla buttercream. We decided to go with a selection of 10 different cakes for dessert. My mum helped by baking the chocolate fudge and carrot cakes, as well as making red velvet cupcakes. We also bought a box of Krispy Kremes to make a doughnut tower. All of the cake was gone by the end of the evening!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Jess was AMAZING! I knew as soon as I saw her photos that I had to book her immediately. She went along with all of our ideas (including a very messy powder paint engagement shoot). The photos are beautiful and really captured the happiness of the day. The only bad thing is now everyone is hassling us to print out photos for their walls!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | The first wedding purchase I made was 10 paper pompoms. It definitely escalated from there – we ended up with 200! My awesome aunty Sair and her friends sewed together 100 metres of bunting for the bar area. To go with the colour theme, we had a rainbow streamer aisle and colourful jelly beans on the seats of the ceremony room, a piñata, paper straws and napkins. For the favours, we had a lucky dip box filled with wrapped up presents of wigs, big glasses, glow sticks and kid’s party prize toys.

Fortunately, Matt’s dad is very handy and helped us with all of the DIY elements (like installing the pompoms and making the limbo pole) and we had lots of family and friends putting all of the décor together at the venue on the day before. It was very much a joint effort. It takes a lot more time than you realise!

THE HONEYMOON | Dubrovnik in Croatia. We are massive Game of Thrones fans and couldn’t wait to go to King’s Landing!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | So many!!! It took us a few days to process it all. Highlights would have to be:

My dad surprised me by booking a black cab to take us to the venue. It was lovely to sit and chat with my mum and dad on the journey there.

My Aunty Kerryn flew all the way from Australia to be there. It was a secret kept from me for a year!

Trying to convince the flower girl to walk down the aisle (it didn’t happen!)

The speeches – emotional but also funny.

Spending a lot of the evening in the photobooth!

Doing the Macarena and Conga at the silent disco.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Try to consider the guest experience. Everyone tells you it is ‘your special day’ but a wedding is nothing without happy people. We wanted it to be a big celebration with lots for guests to talk about and do. My worst nightmare would be for people to be bored.

This real wedding is truly beautiful! I love the colours, the balloons are so simple yet so effective! The theme has really been carefully followed throughout the entire day, from the bunting to the multicolored cake (which is awesome btw) the photos are amazing, loved looking through this!
