Alternative & Creative Budget Friendly Wedding

I am so excited to be sharing with you our very own WWW real bride blogger real wedding this afternoon. WWW readers Ruth and Tomos were married on the 29th of October 2016 and their wedding truly was a representation of them and their future life together. I defy you to have ever seen a wedding so unique, with such personality and creativity. Not to mention on a budget of £5000. Amazing!

They tied the knot at The Floral Hall in Staffordshire and pretty much picked the first of everything they found during the planning. They also rolled up their sleeves and got cracking with many DIY projects. From 1000 paper cranes to dip dyed table cloths, spray painted tin cans, illustrated stationery, customised shopping trolley (yes really!) and brooch bouquets. Woah! They also chose the coolest of attire. Ruth wore a darling vintage gown, with statement flower crown and Doc Marten 1461s, while Tomos opted for a blue suit and Adidas Gazelle’s. They looked gorgeous, and loved up too no? Their fave guys and gals wore floral accessories, dresses, jumpsuits and suits. It all worked so well.

Thanks so much to Pete Cranston for sharing these remarkable shots with us.

THE PROPOSAL | Tom and I had been together for eight years before we got engaged. On two previous occasions I had been secretly convinced he was going to propose; once on Sydney Harbour Bridge and once in a muddy field at a festival; I was wrong both times. There were two times in Tom’s life when he actually tried to propose. Here’s how I ruined the first one: We spent an amazing holiday in Christmas 2015 visiting friends and meeting up with my brother in Bali; just after New Year we spent a couple of days on an amazing island called Gili Air by ourselves. The first day we walked all the way around the island making it back to the harbour just in time for sunset. I returned from the bar just as  (I found out later) Tom had managed to get the ring he had secretly smuggled all the way from England into his hand ready to pop the question, however I returned not only with our drinks but also with the Dutch couple we’d met a few days before on the boat; I insisted they joined usl we had a great night, but Tom’s style was well and truly cramped! Luckily, the next night we were at a bbq restaurant on the beach and Tom slid a box across the table and the rest is history!

THE VISION | Marrying your best pal and having a great time.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | In my professional life I’m hyper organised. I love a list, I love a spreadsheet and I love a deadline. When it came to the wedding I wanted to be as far away from this as possible. Aside from a guest list there were no lists, no plans. The nine months we were engaged were an absolute blast. I spent the evenings making random bits of stuff for the wedding; and we spent the weekends making amazing memories with our friends and families. We followed none of the advice we were given; we said yes to the first everything: first dress, first venue, first caterer. We skipped a lot of things that we didn’t care about: flowers, matching bridesmaid dresses and groomsman suits, first dance. The whole idea of getting married seemed a bit grown up and sensible; so we tried hard to make wedding planning as fun as possible.

BUDGET | About £5000.

THE VENUE | The Floral Hall, Tunstall.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I bought my dress from Ebay for £40; then had some adjustments made by the truly lovely Mel at Joan Brown Vintage; my headdress was custom made by Hippy Poppins. I had an ace pair or Doc Marten 1461s in the day and some Reebok classics at night. I also had a sequin jacket from Pretty Little Thing that I wore later on. I snap up any opportunity life gives me to dress up, wear a flower crown and throw glitter at my face. The wedding was no exception. I didn’t focus on feeling like a bride I focussed on feeling like myself and I felt great!

FINDING THE DRESS | Went on Ebay, typed in “Vintage wedding dress”; bought vintage wedding dress.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Tom wore a suit from ASOS; matching Adidas Gazelle’s and a tie and pocket square from Ebay.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | My beautiful sister in law read the Lyrics to Stornoway’s Fuel Up.

I walked down the aisle to Father John Misty Chateau Lobby #2.

We signed the register to Sam Cooke Wonderful World.

We walked back up the aisle to the Flaming Lips Do you Realize.

Our talented friends made up our wedding band and they were unbelievable.

They played all of our favourite songs with surprise appearances by our bridesmaid Emily, our usher Shenton, and a huge group performance of The Flaming Lips Race for the Prize with our dear friend and musical hero Andy Gower:

They played:

Father John Misty Chateau Lobby

Prince Raspberry Beret

Fleetwood Mac Everywhere

Bruce Springsteen Born to Run

David Bowie Let’s Dance

Waterboys Whole of The Moon

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My bridesmaids are the coolest humans on earth. I asked them all to pick a flowery dress/suit/ jumpsuit. They had ivy headbands with pom pom swags made by Hippy Poppins and they looked insanely good.

THE FLOWERS | There were none! I made my bouquet from brooches bought from charity shops and donated by kind family and friends; I made the bridesmaid’s brooches from buttons along with the button holes for the bridal party. My mum enlisted a small army of family and friends to help her make bunches of pom pom bouquets for the tables.

THE CAKE | My talented mother in law and Tom’s Aunty made us a beautiful wedding cake and my dad personalised a vintage cake topped with green hair! We also had a cake made entirely of cheese and asked guests to bring us a cake along for the table. The results were a perfect mixture of delicious and hilarious.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER |  Pete Cranston, came as a photographer left as a friend. We seriously love the dude. Get him to photograph your wedding.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | I made 1000 paper cranes and hung them from the beams in the venue; my dad dip dyed table cloths, I spray painted jars and tin cans; we had Wayne’s World wedding favours; I illustrated programmes; customised a shopping trolley,I had no idea what it was all going to look like but when it all came together it looked better than I could have hoped!

THE HONEYMOON | We went to New York; we ate our weight in burgers, drank tequila and had the best time.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Standing at the end of the aisle with the girls, my dad and bridesman Andrew feeling like I might explode; then seeing everyone’s faces, seeing Tom’s face and hearing them all burst into applause.

Everything our musical friends did for us that day was memorable but when they all came together to play Race For The Prize and I was stood next to my new husband I have never felt a feeling quite like it.

My bridesmaid Ciara and I decided to put a glitter station at the back of the venue; we assumed the girls we usually festival with would throw a bit on their faces for the evening. By 9pm every man, woman and child was covered in glitter. It was a beautiful thing.

Speeches

Mexican food

Tequila

Laughing

Crying

Dancing

I know it’s cheating a bit as it wasn’t technically the wedding day; but the next day we went for brunch with our nearest and dearest; it gave me an excuse to wear my wedding crown a second time and gave me a bit of time to look around the room; hear other people’s versions of the day and think about how lucky I am.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Do what feels good. Enjoy being someone’s fiancé. Exploit your talented friends and don’t forget to eat the food you paid for. It might get scary but it will absolutely be worth it.

Didn’t the music choices sound inspired? Not to mention the Mexican cuisine and glitter station. Awesome.
