Folks, it really doesn’t get much better than this. A multicolour wedding of dreams…

WWW readers Victoria and Marcus held their legal ceremony on Friday 29th July 2016 followed by their big, bright and beautiful wedding celebrations the following day. Their wedding really was a weekend extravaganza filled with brilliant moments, oodles of personality and a lot of fun. They held their party in a marquee in a field, which was decked with rainbow DIY decorations. Featuring heavily were pom poms, paper chains, ribbons and bottles wrapped in string to name a few. If you’re stuck for décor ideas, you’ll be filled with inspiration after this feature I can tell you.

The flowers were nothing short of epic. Victoria’s bouquet totally blew me away. Filled with colourful stems of dahlia, sunflower, gerbera and fun wool pom poms, then adorned with ribbons to match the white hydrangea bouquets carried by the bridesmaids. Woah! Victoria and Marcus both looked gorgeous in their stylish attire. A strapless lace Justin Alexander number for Victoria and a check waistcoat, chinos and bow tie for Marcus. They looked so cool next to their wedding party too. The maids wore mismatched gold sequin frocks while the boys donned bow ties and braces. Right, I’m off to pin all the images, see you there!

Many thanks to Benjamin Mathers Photography for sharing these remarkable photographs today.

THE PROPOSAL | Marcus proposed with breakfast in bed on a lazy Sunday morning in November. Thank god he did! I was a mess, crying laughing running around the apartment and of course painting my nails for the photos to send to friends – it was hilarious but at the same time really special as it was just the two of us.

THE VISION | I have always been known to be a bit of a ‘do it yourselfer’ so I was online straight away looking for inspiration. Pinterest was a key part of this but I also found online blogs really useful and first found WWW on Facebook where a lot of the inspiration and confidence came from; I could see other brides who were ‘do it yourselfers’ making their own decorations, etc.

We wanted to have a look and feel which really represented us, which made everyone happy and therefore we decided on an ‘All things big, bright and beautiful’ wedding theme.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | Marcus is always busiest around November / December with work so he’d asked if we could just pause, enjoy being engaged, and start planning in the new year. Needless to say on the last chime of midnight on NYE the first words I said were ‘right, wedding planning’. At this point we had 19 months to plan and piece together our wedding and as soon as we decided the key things – location, style and responsibilities – it was a matter of working our way through the tasks.

The wedding was more of a weekend affair for us, Friday was the ‘marriage day’ (the legal ceremony, family day) and Saturday was the ‘wedding day’ (the big day). There were a couple of reasons for this, I really wanted my step-dad to have a key role in the wedding and we had too many wedding guests to have everyone attend our marriage at the registry office. You may ask ‘why not lessen the numbers?’ but this was not an option for us as it was really really important to us to have everyone there whom we love and cherish. Having the wedding across the two days allowed for us to share the legal marriage with our immediate family and then for my step-dad to be the wedding officiant on the Saturday.

THE VENUE | For the Friday we were married in the Electric Picture Palace in Southwold, an old cinema registered for marriage ceremonies. This was a fantastic setting where we were married on the stage against the beautiful backdrop of red and gold.

Following a Champagne reception we moved down to the beach where we had fish and chips and played French cricket; an old family tradition.

The Saturday ceremony was in one of Marcus’ family’s fields, outside on straw bales, accompanied by a marquee for the hosting of the wedding breakfast and of course later the dancing! The marquee company we used were great and very flexible, which resulted in us setting up the wedding in exactly the way we wanted, with very few limitations. Lesson learnt here – always go for lining on a marquee, expensive, but totally worth it!

Given the choice of a field for the Saturday venue we were able to hire in a bar for the evening – run by an old school friend of Marcus’ which provided yet another homely touch to the wedding – and also meant that we were able to have the band we had hired perform outside for the drinks reception, before continuing their performance inside the marquee later in the evening.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I was extremely lucky; I was able to dress up two days. On the Friday we had a more relaxed look but for me that was shoe day! My step-mum bought me some Jimmy Choo’s, which were an absolute dream in cream satin with a sparkly broach on the front. I then wore a really simple ivory dress from Reiss and a head piece which I found on ASOS. On the Friday morning my mum and sister had a gift for me from Marcus, which was a pair of pear shape diamond ear-rings – I ended up wearing them the whole weekend instead the earrings I’d bought.

I had a Justin Alexander dress, style 8744. I felt amazing in it, my veil was my something borrowed from a lovely colleague and my head piece was something I found in Spitalfields market by accident, before I had even found the dress!

FINDING THE DRESS | My mum actually picked out my dress during our first visit to the shop. It looked like it was going to be huge and puffy but it actually settled into a really lovely shape. Even though I loved that dress I wanted to enjoy the search and I went with a few different groups of people to look but ended up going for the Justin Alexander dress after the second time I tried it on. Every other dress was being compared to it and the second time I tried it on I knew it was the right one, by which point I also knew what half of my bridesmaids were wearing so that made the decision easier.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Marcus’ suits for the two days made him look so handsome. A simple three piece navy suit for the Friday with a red and blue (jazzy) tie, which gave a classic look, perfect for the theatre setting. On the Saturday we’d worked really hard to find him something that said country without being too woolly and hence too hot for the summer. He ended up getting a friend who works in the trade to help him find something to fit the spec! The bow ties that we found were from Etsy and really tied into the theme of big bright and beautiful, the groomsmen wore these too in all different colours.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | The readings were really special. We chose my step-sister and step-brother to do one reading, along with the two people who were integral to us meeting in the beginning; Mark who was out with Marcus when we met and Lauren who I lived with at the time. Marcus had secretly asked Mark to write a poem for us as a surprise which was just lovely. I asked Lauren to read ‘I carry your heart with me’ by E.E.Cummings.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I loved my bridesmaids! I had 6 girlies. My little sister Charlotte was first to get her dress, she’s the organised one. Marcus’ sister Mel and niece Paris, Caitlin my longest childhood friend, Heather a friend I’d met through one of Marcus’ friends who is now a very dear friend and Suzy a friend I lived with at university who was 8 months pregnant at the time of our wedding!!

They all chose their own dresses with one rule: it had to be gold and embellished. I wanted something that would allow each of them to wear something that suited their own individual styles. They were all fantastic, really supportive and ready to help whenever I needed it.

THE FLOWERS | I had found an image on Pinterest of the exact bouquet I wanted and I was dedicated in getting an exact replica. My mum actually made the pompoms to go in it and we found the ribbons in Leeds market. The bridesmaids had hydrangeas in white with colourful ribbons to tie them in. The button holes were handmade by my mum with pompoms and corks.

THE CAKE | We love cheese, so we decided to have a cheese tower. It was made up of 5 cheeses from various locations across the country, representing special places within our lives: Lancashire, Leicestershire, Yorkshire, Suffolk and London.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Our photographer was, Ben Mathers and we also had a videographer, Steve Hood. They were both fantastic! Ben had the exact look and feel to his particular style of photography we were looking for. It’s so important to be able to rely on your photographer to capture special moments and other moments you just won’t see because you’re too busy. He got all the shots we wanted and more, we could not have been happier; my two favs were of all our couple friends along the road (a shot we’d spoken about right from the start) and the confetti shot when we surprised everyone with our first dance.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | All decorations were made by us and family members, my mum was amazing! We wrapped 150 individual bottles with wool for centre pieces (a good excuse to drinks lots of wine), 80 woollen pompoms, 60 tissue pompoms, a ribbon chandelier, massive cardboard “V” and “M” light up letters (made by my amazing mum) and 50 origami swans!

Honestly we had an army help us put everything up, it was brilliant!

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD | We are massive foodies and love the type of group eating where you are all sat round the table passing around and sharing food. Whenever we have people round we always serve food in this way and we wanted to do it for the wedding too. We had to really try hard to find the right caterer but I am so glad we did, it went down really well with our guests.

THE HONEYMOON | We had an amazing road trip around California. We made sure we spent the first few days relaxing, drinking wine in Napa Valley before exploring the rest of the state. Marcus loves to travel around while we are on holiday and our honeymoon was no different! We left Napa for Yosemite before joining one of our bridesmaids and groomsmen in their new home in Orange County. We then ventured back up the coast via Santa Barbara, Monterey Bay among some of the main places before ending our honeymoon in San Francisco; an unforgettable trip.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | On the Friday we took a moment with our photographer Ben and walked through Southwold High Street, being congratulated by everyone we passed (including a couple of our close friends we ran into) while getting some fab photos.

Another moment which I think was probably most memorable for our guests was our surprise first dance. We started off with a slow dance to Jon Legend, All Of Me, before the band suddenly stopped, saying they’d got the wrong song and broke into Reet Petite by Jackie Wilson! The bridesmaids were armed with confetti canons which resulted in one of our favourite photos from the weekend.

My personal memorable moment was all down to my lovely husband who surprised me with fireworks later in the evening, queued by Katie Perry Firework playing in the background. Fireworks are my absolute favourite thing in the world and it topped off an already amazing day.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | HAVE FUN! Ensure that you take time out for the two of you on the day. This was the best advice we received and has been well received advice we have since passed on ourselves.

In respect to the build up to the wedding, I got Marcus involved in the crafty bits which was great fun making stuff together. We still had our own responsibilities, Marcus did the finances and booked the more “practical things”, while I chose the menu and generally made the more “creative decisions”, guiding the look and feel of wedding. In doing this we stuck to what we both knew and it worked really well.

Something I’ve learnt from other couples, as well as from my own wedding, is to stick to what you want, you 100% won’t make every single person happy so don’t try to please everyone. This is your one day that you can be selfish.
