Quirky Summery Relaxed Yellow Country Wedding

If you aren’t dreaming of Summer just yet, then I can guarantee you will be by the end of this feature. Pure blissful sunshine, a pretty yellow colour scheme and love all round. Yes it’s Sam and Paul’s nuptials which were held on the 25th July 2015 at The Red Lion in Burnsall, Yorkshire. YAY.

This lovely pair envisioned a relaxed, country wedding which was crafted to perfection. There were so many lovely quirky touches, with the boys in ditsy yellow bow ties and sweet floral paper goods. Daisies were used in the lush bouquets and as decoration for the sweet cake, while touches of mint complimented the yellow beautifully.

Sam chose a lace gown by Trudy Lee which she accessoried with Rachel Simpson Shoes and a statement bespoke headpiece featuring a vintage bracelet from her late grandma. Simply gorgeous.

Thanks so much to the wonderful Mr and Mrs Boutique Wedding Photography for sending these photographs to us to enjoy today.

THE PROPOSAL | We’d talked about marriage many times, and knew it was something we both wanted to do. Paul is very laid back and after a few years together, I started to really hint. I even pointed out a ring I’d seen. After 8 years together, Paul finally proposed on New Year’s Eve. Our home was lovely and cosy with the fragrant smell of pine and Christmas tree lights twinkling in the background. He’d chosen the ring I’d pointed out 8 months prior, I was so happy he’d remembered which ring I loved after all that time. The ring was hidden in a gorgeous leather handbag disguised as a late Christmas present. He had planned to propose on Christmas Day but there was a delay with the delivery. It was such a lovely way to end the year, and so exciting to start the new one as husband and wife to be.

THE VISION | We wanted to create a relaxed, country wedding for our dearest friends and family to celebrate our marriage with us, set in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, a place that is close to both our hearts.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | The first thing on our wedding planning list was to find the venue. We fell in love with the picturesque village of Burnsall straight away, this made the venue choice an easy decision. The next decision was our photographer, which was by far the easiest decision made for the entire wedding. As we started to tick more and more things off the list, it began to seem real. As a designer, I couldn’t wait to start creating all the different elements, ensuring we had all the extra special touches for the wedding I’d envisaged. I wanted to combine elements of our life together as a couple and include things such as our love of music, the countryside and nature. I starting looking at different colour palettes and collecting bits and pieces for decorations. I enthusiastically started a few Pinterest projects, although I have to admit I did get a bit carried away.

BUDGET | We had a budget of £15,000, the total ending up being a little over, even with my parents taking care of the dress and cake. Oops!

THE VENUE | Having both grown up in Yorkshire, we knew it was the only place for us. We set about finding a suitable venue to house all our lovely family and friends. This was quite a challenge for the capacity we needed and the style of venue we wanted. After searching online for a couple of weeks, we decided to take a look at ‘The Red Lion’. We drove through the quaint villages and rolling hills, and became excited about what was around the next corner. As we drew closer and caught a glimpse of the village through the trees we knew it was a very special place. We passed the village green and cute village tea room, and there it was, a lovely old country building, stood next to the river, surrounded by beautiful countryside. As we pulled up in the car park, our minds were already made up. We smiled knowingly at each other, this was it, our special place, for our big day!

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress was by British designer, Trudy Lee. A strapless sweetheart with fishtail in Ivory satin finished with tulle overlay and corded lace appliqué. I wore a stunningly beautiful bespoke headpiece, designed and handmade by the amazing Emma Isaacs, featuring a vintage bracelet my late grandma gave me mixed with vintage treasures, gorgeous pearls and jewels. My beautiful mint shoes were by designer Rachel Simpson. I also wore a fingertip length veil with corded lace edging with pearl details, this was a lucky eBay find, and matched perfectly with the corded lace on my dress. I wore an opal necklace that my Dad had chosen for me whilst on a visit to Australia and pearl earrings to compliment it.

FINDING THE DRESS | I started early and thought I knew exactly what style of dress I wanted and found lots of reference in magazines and online. But when I went shopping with my mum I soon realised the dress I’d imagined I would wear didn’t suit my shape at all. After browsing the high-street and a bridal outlet we decided to take the plunge and visit a bridal shop. We chose Precious Bridal as it was half way for both of us to meet. When we arrived we were welcomed by Donna and I described the kind of feel I was thinking of, but explained I wasn’t sure about the shape. She selected 3 dresses and led me to the changing room. The first one was a simple fitted white satin gown with a dramatic cowl back complimented with pretty buttons all the way down. Although this dress looked beautiful it wasn’t quite the right for me. When I tried the second dress and looked in the mirror, I felt beautiful. It was perfect for the style of wedding I’d envisaged. I reluctantly tried the 3rd dress on, but quickly dismissed it and got back into the second one. I had found my wedding dress! I did challenge my decision on many occasions but every time I went for a fitting I fell in love with my dress again.

GROOM’S ATTIRE | Paul chose a mid-grey 3 piece suit from Next for himself and his three best men, Chris, Dave, and Dan. We choose the bow ties together, as soon as I saw the beautiful canary ditsy floral ties on Mrs Bowtie’s online shop, I knew they were a perfect match for the natural summery colour palette we’d chosen. We decided to go for matching pocket squares too. I handmade the groomsmen’s, Dads’ and Grandads’ crochet and fabric boutonnières as I thought they’d be a lovely keepsake. Paul chose tan leather brogues to compliment and even bought some yellow socks to tie in with the theme.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | I walked down the aisle to a violin rendition of ‘Please let me get what I want’ by The Smiths, we signed the register to ‘ Mind games’ by John Lennon and we walked out to ‘Love me do’ by The Beatles. We had two readings, the first was ‘ The Apache wedding blessing’ read by Keeran Sims, Paul’s Canadian cousin. The second was the lyrics to ‘All you need is love’ read by Dave James, one of Paul’s best men. We were so pleased that we’d invested the time in choosing the music together as it was a really special part of our day.

My uncle, Neil Wilde is a professional Boogie Woogie piano player and I always knew I wanted him to play at our wedding. He is a natural entertainer and all the guests, young and old loved him.

Following my uncle we had our friend Chris Dj all our favourite songs.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | I had four bridesmaids, 3 of my dearest friends; Claire, Bhavna and Sarah and my lovely cousin Louise, I wanted each of my lovely ladies to have a dress that would suit their own style and personality. We decided on mint to compliment the yellows and ivory in our palette and luckily we found four beautiful dresses on the high street that looked stunning together. They all looked so beautiful on the day and were a HUGE support to me during the whole wedding process. I couldn’t have done it without them. Thank you ladies! We also had two of our gorgeous nieces’, Lilly and Anais as our flowers girls. They looked like little angels.

THE FLOWERS | In the studio where I work, we order flowers from this very special and talented lady for birthdays and occasions and they are always spectacular! Her attention to detail is wonderful. I emailed her with some ideas I had and made an appointment to see her with my mum. When we arrived we were welcomed by Helen and led through to a lovely candle lit room with beautiful soft music and stunning flower arrangements. It took my breath away and both myself and my mum were very emotional. Helen went through all the options with us and came up with great ideas to make my vision come to life. She was such a pleasure to work with, I cannot recommend her enough. On the day she was a star as even though I wasn’t aware at the time she saved the day with a cake stand emergency. When I walked into the room I was stunned! The flowers were so beautiful, exactly how I’d imagined and much more. I’d chosen a mix of country wild flowers including daisies, geberas and roses and ivy. The bark centrepieces were amazing, and featured ‘grey cats tails’ which were a lovely nod to our three cats. Helen even stayed through our ceremony to make sure our wedding breakfast room looked perfect.

THE CAKE | My mum kindly took care the wedding cake. I’d given her some reference of the kind of style and shape I was thinking of. She found a local cake lady, went to tastings and even had a mock-up made. I designed the cake topper with our names to finish it off. The cake looked and tasted lovely on the day. Two of my lovely friends offered to bake extra cake for the wedding to make sure there was plenty. My talented friend Vicky Marshall made cute cupcakes, featuring a fondant me and Paul on one and our three cats on another. My other equally talented friend, Hannah Sowden made us a gorgeous carrot cake. Yum!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | I’d heard of Craig’s beautiful photography through friends and colleagues. We both knew from viewing Craig’s images that he was the photographer for us. His reportage style, composition and beautiful lighting suited our rustic wedding perfectly. When we met up at the venue, we instantly warmed to his caring and gentle nature, and on the day he was amazing in every way. His photos are beautifully captured moments that we will cherish always and forever remind us of our special day. Thank you Craig!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | As The Red Lion was pretty much a blank canvas, I worked hard to ensure all the details tied in well with the summery, country theme and beautiful oak room, from the save the dates, invites, favour jars, boutonnières and bowties to the candles jars ,doilies, ribbon backdrop, wool initials, band table names and bunting. Even the welcome cocktail had to be the right colour. I also made a wedding wishes trug, a mini games box and personalised activity book, illustration designed by my talented friend and bridesmaid Sarah Ward, for our many nephews and nieces.

THE HONEYMOON | We went on honeymoon pretty much straight after the wedding, we started off in Paris for four nights, then took the train down to the south of France, stayed in Menton for two nights, the Nice for two nights. Then we took a flight to Naples and stayed in Sorrento for six nights. We had a wonderful time. One of our highlights was dancing our first dance in front of the Eiffel Tower.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Paul – 1- The first glimpse of my beautiful bride walking down the aisle towards me. 2- When Sam said ‘ I definitely do during the wows’, and everyone had a little giggle. For me, 1- seeing Paul waiting for me at the front of the ceremony room, the way he looked at me I will never forget. 2 – My Dad coming to collect me from my cottage, I was so proud to have him by my side, it meant so much to both of us. 3 – seeing my lovely Grandad the night before the wedding, we don’t get chance to see each other often, it was so special to me that he and his side of my family were at my wedding. For both of us, our first dance was magical. We’d learnt and rehearsed our dance to ‘This charming man’- The Smiths, the lessons alone are memories we will never forget. Thanks so much Laura.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Go with your heart and what represents you as a couple, you will never please everyone. Planning a wedding can be very stressful, try not to worry if you think you ‘should’ be feeling a certain way and you’re feeling the opposite. Have breaks and weekends away from planning. Keep up with exercise and eating routines, trust me you will feel so much better, physically and mentally.

Sadly, I have just found your beautiful blog, I love that you not only feature gorgeous weddings but have informative articles that shed light on the sometimes difficult parts of wedding planning, including your own experiences.

You have inspired me to share mine;

I too have suffered the most terrible anxiety and panic attacks throughout this entire process, and questioned myself more times than I can imagine about decisions made or not made. I never questioned whether I was marrying the right man, I knew that was true. But the truth is, you never know how you will react or respond to a situation until you are in it. And for me personally, this was a very hard test. I was lucky enough to have the support of my amazing friends, family and colleagues to help me through. So many times I said to myself ‘I don’t feel how I’m supposed to feel.’ The hardest part for me was to accept that ‘it’s OK to feel how you feel.’ Everyone is different.

I found our wedding day difficult with anxiety but I managed to get through it, and when I reflect on it now, I have a wonderful husband and lots of lovely memories to cherish.

I do wish I would have been able to overcome the anxiety and enjoy our day more and even after our lovely honeymoon I’m still battling with it, however I’m taking steps every day to fight it.

How pretty?! And thank you so much Sam for sharing your personal anxiety experiences. I wish you much happiness, strength and love this year.

Sam and Paul, thank you so much for sharing your amazing wedding story with us here today xo Lou

Precious wedding, all the way around – Love the colors, the little flower girls and all the smiles from the bride and groom.

We would have loved to write the toast for the beloved – in a rhyme!
