The first thing that caught my eye when I saw this wedding was the unusual forest green and rich red colour palette, it just works.
Carly and James married in the Autumn and wanted a natural and relaxed feel to their wedding. They hosted their wedding at Newburgh Priory, Yorkshire, with a beautifully decorated marquee for their reception.
Carly looked gorgeous in a creation by the House of Mooshki, with love heart shoes and pretty up do. While James went for a dapper burgundy suit and skinny tie. I so love the green bridesmaids dresses and that striking red rose cascading bouquet which was inspired by Carly’s Nanas wedding bouquet. Perfect.
Thanks so much to the brilliant Lee Scullion for sharing his photographs today.
The Proposal… James proposed under the Northern Lights on a surprise winter holiday to Tromso.
The Vision for the Day… We wanted to have a natural, relaxed feel to the wedding. Using all the forest greens and burgundy of autumn.
The Planning Process… The process was mostly to do with the colours and food. The venue needed little work as it was so impressive as it is! We used Boylan’s Bridal Boutique who planned every detail impeccably. The catering was outstanding, even the style of canapés and starters tied in with the whole colour scheme.
The Venue… Newburgh Priory – Just outside of York.
The Dress + Accessories… House Of Mooshki tailored dress. Diamond necklace, gift from husband. Vivienne Westwood shoes.
Finding the Dress… I did not really have a pleasant experience of bridal shops due to my height. Most shops I went to made me feel like I could never get a dress, and staff did not seem too helpful. Then I met Vikki from House of Mooshki, and she made me feel like I could wear the dress I wanted and she was excited to be making a dress for a tall woman. I can’t believe how beautiful the dress was. I wish she could make all of my dresses!
Groom’s Attire… Originally paid for a suit to be made over the internet in China a good 8 months before the wedding. The suit never arrived which was a pretty awful situation to be in a few months before the big day! So a friend of the groom recommended Slaters in Leeds which is a chain of suit fitters. My original suit design was burgundy, so at first I was worried I’d find anything similar in this colour. It turned out Slaters had a massive choice of attire to choose from and within a week they had ordered me a three piece burgundy suit ready for the wedding in no time at all.
The Readings + Music… JB – For the ceremony we used a fantastic string quartet based in Manchester sensibly titled ‘ Manchester Strings’. They played a mixture of rock and pop songs much to our taste and were truly well skilled musicians. They even learnt a song by my band I play in for when we walked down the aisle together to close the ceremony. Very clever of them!
Beautiful Bridesmaids… The bridesmaids wore forest green dresses with nude heels. They did not need much accessories as they are all total babes anyway. We also had 2 mini bridesmaids who wore soft pink dresses and Martha, the beautiful flower girl.
The Flowers… The bridal bouquet was made from a picture I had of my Nanas. It was amazing, and she would have loved it. Dark red roses and fern. The bridesmaids had ivory roses and it matched their dresses perfectly.
The Cake… The groom is a bit of a kid at heart and have a very bad sweet tooth. From being a child he has always loved Mr. Kiplings French Fancies, so we thought ‘what the hell’ and sourced a local cake maker in the Leeds area (Donna Makes Cakes) and began a conversation with her about making three massive French Fancies for our wedding cake. I think initially she assumed the cake was for a children’s party which is pretty funny. But however, the cake was made and it was of immense quality. I would highly recommend her!
Your Photographer… We used Lee Scullion as he was recommended to us by a few people. Once we had seen their wedding photos we booked him straight away. He worked wonders calming the nerves of us all before the ceremony and he did a great job on the group pictures. A total joy to have there.
The Details + Decor… The wedding invites were all screen printed by hand by a local design company called Prints of Thieves which looked totally unique and original. A very good friend of ours who doesn’t usually do weddings decided to dress up our day for us and do the catering. We had our own colour scheme of burgundy, ivory and green and wanted the décor to be kind of rustic but with a contemporary twist to it. The table names were written on to chalk boards, mixed shared platters of food were served on slates, dinner was self service and we had a light display in and around the marquee not too dissimilar to a Queen concert! Towards the end of the night the guests were supplied with an amazing firework display followed by stone baked pizza and lamb pitta breads. Was quite magical really!
The Honeymoon… We decided to go to the Maldives. We would never have the chance to holiday there so we saved up and along with everyone’s contributions we had the most wonderful time in this magical world.
Memorable Moments… My most memorable moment was when I saw James when I was walking down the aisle. All my worries and nerves disappeared and I just got so excited. I was so happy I had this huge smile on my face during the whole ceremony. Then, to turn around and look at everyone who had shared this amazing moment with us made it really emotional. Also, the group photos where hilarious. The speeches were also so much more than I could have hoped for.
Advice for Other Couples… Plan ahead with a good couple of months spare and first things first, get in touch with your local registrar and get the nitty gritty paper work and interviews well and truly out of the way soon as you have a wedding date and venue.
