WWW readers Rita and Craig chose the most idyllic and magical location for their October nuptials. Tunnels Beaches in North Devon is settled in the rugged coastline with breathtaking views.
Rita and Craig wanted their day to be relaxed and fun whilst reflecting their love of animals, having a vegetarian menu and sweet animal details in their décor. They chose a palette of blues and turquoise, with their bridesmaids in mismatched dresses and blue lanterns hung above. There were wild blooms home-grown by family and I spy some fab Alphabet Bags.
Rita donned a stunning dress by Charlie Brear with a hairpiece by Jenny Packham while Craig wore a woven jacket, vegetarian shoes and fun animal tie. Perfect.
Thanks so much to the wonderful Marianne Taylor for sharing her photographs with us today.
The Proposal… The magic happened on a wonderful day by the sea in Portmeirion, Wales, and a seagull witnessed it all!
The Vision for the Day… We both wanted the day to be magical but also fun and relaxed, and especially to make sure all the guests coming from Spain felt at ease, had a good time and managed to forget the language barrier, we wanted everyone to enjoy themselves and share our happiness!
I love the sea so finding Tunnels Beaches was like a dream come true. We are both animal lovers so all the food was vegetarian and we had an animal theme where all the tables had an animal name and each guest had a place card with their name and an animal fact written both in English and Spanish so guests had something to talk about!.
The Planning Process… We spent a year collecting jars, vintage table clothes and lots of small details, we picked up lots of shells from the beach in Laredo, Spain to use as place card holders, and Craig spent endless hours cutting small holes in them to hold the cards!.
The colour theme was a range of teals/turquoise blues/creams and all the decorations, balloons, lanterns, garlands, ribbons were carefully chosen in that range of colours.
The Venue… The Tunnels Beaches in Ilfracombe, it is the most magical wonderful place we could have dreamed of for our wedding, when we visited it was love at first sight, the sea, the rocks, the tunnels, it really is amazing. The staff are super helpful and went out of their way to make sure everything ran smoothly, lots of friendly smiles and things got done without us even noticing!
The Dress + Accessories… My dress was from Charlie Brear, a lace 1940s cowl neck beautiful dress, with butterfly sleeves and a silk sash, very romantic and beautiful.
I found my shoes in a wonderful shop in Bilbao called Lula, they are Chie Mihara’s in a pretty dusty pink.
My headpiece was from Jenny Packham and I wore my grandmother’s pearls as a bracelet so she could be there with me in spirit.
Finding the Dress… I knew I wanted a vintage style dress and I had had my eye on Charlie Brear’s designs for ages, so the minute I walked in I knew it would be one of her dresses I would be wearing!
Groom’s Attire… Craig wore a woven jacket, vegetarian shoes and a beautiful animal tie from Scatterbrain Ties on Etsy.
The Readings + Music… Craig’s mum and one of my best friends read a version of “An Irish Blessing” both in English and Spanish, it was a very emotional moment!
For the guests assembling we chose Yo La Tengo’s “Let’s Be Still”. For walking down the aisle the beautiful Tom Waits’ “Little Trip to Heaven (On The Wings of Your Love)”. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “The Lark Ascending” performed by Nigel Kennedy for the signatures. And finally Neil Diamond’s “We” for the grand exit!
Beautiful Bridesmaids… Ooooh my beautiful bridesmaids :D… they were all wearing shades of teal/turquoise/blue and even though they all live in different countries and chose their own dresses it all worked out very well and they looked like mermaids from the sea! I couldn’t have done it without their support, they are amazing friends!
The Flowers… The flowers were a bit of a logistical work of art from Craig’s mum’s and her friend Mel’s gardens. We planted some wildflower seeds in the spring for the aisle and table decorations, and then the wonderful Mandy from the Somerset Flower Farm created the most beautiful bouquets for me and my bridesmaids, buttonholes for Craig, the best man, our mums and my brother, and lots of decorations for the gazebo, it all looked so gorgeous it nearly made me cry when I saw it!.
The Cake… The delicious cake was made by Rosanne Hollowell, and we chose two very cute porcelain seahorses from bhldn as a cake topper.
Your Photographer… Marianne Taylor – what can I say that hasn’t been said about the wonderful Marianne, she has an incredible gift that makes everything that she sees through her eyes turn into the most wonderful imagery, emotional and warm, soft light pastel coloured beauty. And she has gifted us with the most beautiful memories we could have ever dreamed for, all our friends and family look so amazing and happy, the venue, the magical moments she captured, we can’t thank her enough for our wedding photos!
The Details + Decor… We designed all the stationery ourselves to go with the animal theme, the save the dates, the invites, the place cards, everything! The wedding favours were plantable animals so people could take a memory home and grow some flowers as a reminder of the day.
We used BerinMade wonderful stamp with our names for the wedding favours and envelopes. The beautiful Welcome wedding sign was from First Snow Fall.
All our friends worked so hard to help out with the decorations in the morning, it would have been impossible without them, thank you all!
The Honeymoon… We went on a cruise in the Baltic Sea, it was really great being able to stop in so many places, loved the ballet in St. Petersburg, and Copenhagen and Helsinki are to die for. The force 10 winds storm we got caught in wasn’t that wonderful :) but we now have a story to tell haha!!!
Memorable Moments… My friend Larraitz sang a beautiful Basque song and Jim, the best man made a heroic effort to give his speech both in Spanish and English!!! John and Becka from 21 Crows played some amazing songs, we really are lucky to have some wonderful friends.
Advice for Other Couples… Enjoy, enjoy and enjoy! Don’t worry about small details you haven’t managed to finish, nobody will even notice!! Plan things as thoroughly as you can beforehand, but on the day just make sure you savour every moment, it really is a once in a lifetime feeling to be able to share all the love you have for each other with your loved ones, friends and family.
